He's literally not a 10. He's box to box. I tried explaining his ideal position in my previous post. He isn't a 6 which should be Man Utd's top priority but he'll be a huge upgrade on players playing the 8 role atm.
He's an attacking box to box/attacking 8. If you're playing a 4231, that's closer to a #10 than one of the deeper guys. If we're playing a midfield 3, then he's the attacking 8 rather than the deep playmaking one or ball winning/defensive one.

Also I'm saying this in more of a Ten Hag system. Ten Hag likes having a ball winner/more defensive guy in next to a deep playmaker usually who can move with the ball as well and is press resistant... That just isn't SMS from what I've seen of him. In a Ten Hag system, I think he'd be seen as a 10 more than anything. Regardless of how you rate him compared to Bruno or Eriksen, that just isn't needed.

But he can play in 4-2-3-1 as long as there is a natural defensive midfielder. He plays in a midfield two for our national team and he's good enough. If United was to get a destroyer, he could absolutely play in that role. I don't know how much you've seen him play, but he's a really good 8. I've watched him long before he came to Lazio, since his Vojvodina days and I watch all of his games in both our NT and in Lazio.
Get a classical DM play SMS next to him with one of Eriksen/Bruno in front of them and that is a really good midfield.
His best position in 4-2-3-1 would be as one of the 2 deeper midfielders imo.

I wouldn't be hugely surprised if we do go in for him.

Unless McTominay plays our midfield is full of midgets.

Casemiro Eriksen SMS?
This would be quite the midfield transformation from where we are now. On paper at least. One can dream (and wish this talk was a month ago, not now!).

He definitely will be costing more than £42m but feck it, spend whatever budget we have on him and Casemiro. The two of them would complement each other very well.

Though i guess at Manchester United we can never have enough #10's. Might as well add to Bruno and Eriksen right???
Bruno is finished. So yes, a good goalscoring number 10 would be welcome. Eriksen can play 3 or 4 different roles.

SMS seems more like a goalscoring number 8 though, so even better.

With De Jong looking unlikely and reports we're after 2 midfielders, is this our 2nd midfielder if we manage to get Casemiro in?

Hope so. Casemiro + SMS would not get bullied.

Who told you.
History told me. SMS has been "linked" with Manchester United going back to the year we got Pogba. It's never been anything but garbage tier rumors for clicks. You can look forward to doing this again in next years SMS thread when the Summer window opens.

SMS makes slightly more sense if Casemiro were to be signed. Can see how they would operate in a double pivot or a 4-3-3 with Bruno/Eriksen ahead or on the other side of midfield to SMS.

Casemiro - SMS - Eriksen
This (Casemiro) is a different type/profile of player we’ve linked with so would signal a change of plan either by choice or more than likely necessity. Have to think you’d need another midfield to play with him though and SMS does seem logical but not sure that works from a financial standpoint.

Looking at over £100m for the pair…

It is the opposite for me. Spending 50+mil on Casemiro, that's already over 100mil combined with Martinez signing. We need a forward. With our scouting and negotiation skill, we may need around 40mil for that forward. It's hard to believe we're hitting 200mil this window by signing SMS.

Then one of SMS best attribute is his aerial ability/physicality. He should be allowed more freedom to roam and getting into the box. SMS and Eriksen look to be better fit. However, Renewing Bruno how we did, and with Bruno is more an attacker than a midfielder or maestro no 10, it would be huge waste of resource thus unrealistic.

If they both happened I think it'd be sooner that Eriksen is deep with Casemiro and SMS is the more advanced guy. You need the deep playmaking next to Casemiro, Eriksen can do that, SMS can't.

We won't be signing, and probably shouldn't be signing, a centre forward if Ronaldo and Martial will both still be here.

Ronaldo is likely to leave. Even if he stays, you can't expect much more than number on last season. The trust on Martial is insane. Sancho is as good or more in pre season and see how he did in PL the least couple games. Martial getting injured is like repeat of his last few seasons, so the probability of him returning and not playing as good as pre season is high. There is always chance that his season would be all stop start due to injuries too.

Before this pre season, it's a common agreement, we need to plan for future with a CF signing regardless. Some fans are just too gullible to now think it's all good if Ronaldo and Martial stay.

He would cost 42m and no one is after him?

I call heavy bullshit on that one. For that price in todays market already a heap of clubs would have offered contracts to him!

Sure, but I expected Martial to be sold or leave on loan again. He's not, so we readjust. There's areas I'd sooner prioritise now, namely midfielder x2, goalkeeper, and then probably either wide forward or right back first.
