It makes it much easier for these players at Madrid on the wrong side of 30 to still play at such a high level when they are surrounded by other talented players who are also able to cover the ground that players like Modric can't.

Buying Tchouamèni of course is with a view to progress to the first team, that is what clubs with a clear and coherent strategy do. Fair enough if our vision was to sign Casemiro to plug the gap with a view to signing someone to replace him in the next couple of years. But he is set to be on a long term contract and on higher wages. Ask yourself, why are Real Madrid selling him? And why did they sign those players last summer to progress into the starting 11?

When you start to question if Casemiro is indeed on the cusp of a decline, Real Madrid's position starts to make more sense. Its good for them they can rely on clubs like us to pay over the odds for someone who is not going to command anywhere near the same fee or wages when we come to sell him.
Well yes that’s the fair punishment of life for us since we are an appallingly run club now for a decade. Overpaying and not being at the front of the queue for the worlds best young talent. Fairs. But this lad is still at the top of his game. Coupled with further signings…that position won’t be our weakest link. Still tons of work needed to make sure he can replicate that kind of influence here with average players agreed.

Because we aer u

Mainly those that rely on skill and ability on the ball. No those that rely more on physicality or mobility.
Casemiro was never fast. As Cyberman pointed out, Fernandinho was older when he joined City, and I doubt anyone would not see that as a success - more physical player as well.

I think he has 3-5 years at the top of his game, and that would make for a great signing.

I think that it's simpler than that. We needed top midfielders for several roles, we focused on the younger, rarer talent and when De Jong became definitively out of reach we diverted our attention and resources to alternatives in other roles.
Yeah we definitely need a player of his ilk. Just funny how quickly we have concluded this deal whereas we were more than happy to sit on our hands by the phone for de Jong. Obviously we're closer to the deadline now but with a club so wary of social media etc. I still find it hard to believe it isn't a coincidence this is happening when there is so much Glazer out talk.

Aye definitely. The Antony situation is another example, panicked and offered Ajax nearly £70m for him yesterday when it’s too late but we could’ve offered that a month ago when we tried to sign him initially and it probably would’ve got the deal done. Utter shambles.
Yeah good point on Antony, hadn't even considered that but you're right.

KDB is 31, so is Thiago. Fernandinho was 31 when Pep joined city.
Cheers mate. People are obsessed with age, or young age to be more specific. I was in the best shape of my life from 30-34 ish, then got lazy. And I have never been a professional athlete, but I was faster and stronger at 32 than I was at 25, not to mention 18.

I think he will be a brilliant addition.

Lots to be positive about.... but no different to Bastian, Varane, Falcao, Di Maria, Sanchez, etc.....
Stupid comment really.

Schweinsteiger was suffering bad injuries at Bayern already before he arrived and was 32.

Falcao was signed when he had never recovered properly from a serious injury.

Sanchez was already on the decline physically at Arsenal and looked a shadow of his former self for a while

Varane has struggled to stay injury free since arrived, which has meant he hasn't been able to play many games to get up to speed, but if does stay fit and has Casemiro in front of him, we will see a different player.

Di Maria is the only one that has flopped for no reason other than his mental frailty especially after wanting to go to PSG and also being burgled. His head was never in it.

Casemiro doesn't have injury problema and put in a world class performance in the CL just 3 months ago. The man is the best CDM in the world.

Tbf, and this is me being as generous to the club as I can be, it does put the willingness to wait for FDJ into context if they knew some sort of alternative signing on this scale or below would still be possible towards the end of the transfer window.

I don't like how different a profile of player it is to FDJ (at least unless we sign another midfielder as well) and I definitely don't like all the other transfers we've left until the last minute but in and of itself it makes waiting for FDJ seem less risky.

The club has maintained it has had other options if the FdJ thing didn't work out and the Athletic have said this Casemiro deal has been ongoing for weeks. I don't think this is a panic buy, just another option we have decided to take.
I will make fun of Murtough until the end of time because the optics of this window are comical but in reality I only have an issue with the smaller deals, smaller improvements/sells that we have missed. Targetting De Jong until it was deemed impossible was the right move, moving to Casemiro or even Rabiot was sensible, abandoning the Rabiot move due to not liking the wage demands is sensible.

The only issue that I have now is that we need to sell a bunch of players and take punts on budget talents. There is no point insisting with some of our players. That part is a bit disappointing.

Wait.. it's not even formal?

I thought having a medical means it's already a done deal?
Not necessarily, in fact a club can request a medical before making a final offer for a contract. Medicals are for the buying clubs insurances.

100 percent agree.

There is a fair few players need to go, we have hung on to players for FAR too long.. It's why I am not against a Garner sale, add a buy back clause if need be.

As for signing some budget players, it's a shame that these days we seem to miss them and end up going for them a year or two later when their value has quadrupled.
