Maybe I'm a cynical person, but if we're to believe the issue is either over love of Barcelona or being owed €17million, I'm gonna assume it's down to the money every time.
It likely is money. He has refused to sign a lower contract - supposedly, he loves Barcelona FC, but he clearly loves money more.

And if he ends up coming, then we all accept it was about 17m right?
If he comes before the deadline, then yes I'll absolutely accept it was a stand off over the 17m. I'm just not convinced that was the hold up anymore as I've already stated above why it doesn't make any sense for Barca or Utd to allow that to be the hold up.

Can’t wait until the window shuts and we finally see the back of this thread.
I've actually had a sit down with the wife last night to discuss how we progress our life after 1st September. I've agreed to allocate my FDJ thread time to her. She's over the moon that she'll get to spend 18 hours per day with me now.

Barcelona have been painted as the cheapskate bad guys all summer long... Why not just offer him the 17 million to move, and then leak it that they have but he even turned that down?

Even if it doesn't happen this window, it will happen in the next after he has been abused by the fans for a couple of months.

After the way they've treated him in public and the way they have their mouthpieces repeat the completely illogical argument of 'either he's sold or he takes a pay cut" all summer, he needs to stand up for himself and go. He hasn't won anything with Barcelona other than the Spanish Cup once and they are much weaker than they look on paper. Real Madrid is far stronger.

However if they treat him like crap and are trying to weasel out of paying him his deferred wages, loyalty bonus and performance bonuses he is entitled to, then clearly he is well within his right to tell them to do one and stick around until they relent. There is no way he should be leaving 17M+ on the table to "help" a club that treats him like this. I suspect the issues have been massively compounded by Barca's insistence that his contract is criminal and that they therefore won't be paying him what they owe.

They could also owe him significantly more than 17M. We all quote the 17M as what he is owed, but he is due a loyalty bonus of 15M euros as well - which they should pay him given he is being sold and forced out. All in all we could be looking at 17M in deferred wages and 15M in loyalty bonus + bonuses that were deferred due to covid and the financial situation. So in reality we could be talking about €32M+. Which is an insane amount of money to just leave behind to "help" an employer that treats you like crap.
I think you may have identified the real problem. Frenkie wants very big money to walk away. Say £30m - if Barca want all of that added to the transfer fee, no wonder the deal is stuck.

I bet they want £70m plus the £30m they need to pay Frenkie. Effectively they value him at £100m. That’s high. And they’re not in a strong bargaining position. Hence we bide our time.

I wouldn’t be surprised if we “called off” our pursuit to force Barca to re-think before it’s too late.

Whilst there’s time left in the window, I think this could still happen.

How’s that for some top-level speculation?

This thread should be printed off by some admin clerk and submerged in a time capsule somewhere until the year 3022.

Was that similar? For some reason I just thought he was injured
Poor after his injury and on huge wages. Might have had a cut in the mean time but they still want to get rid. Refuses to leave.

But also barely plays.

FDJ and his partner love Barcelona so much that they can happily tolerate all the abuses and humiliation? Nothing can stop their endless love for the city? I don't buy that.

My guess is that Barcelona don't want to pay 17M because it means that they should pay all of deferred wages to other players. They should cut at least a part of 17M to enforce a similar deal to others.
On the last day there will be a deal where all parties share a burden.

I don’t know how much he loves Barça nor money, but say one of your dearest friends doesn’t pay back a hefty amount, you sure as hell hope they’re about to prove your anxiety wrong.

You may want to give the divorce lawyers a heads up that you will be spending 18 hours per day with your wife.

Aren’t Barcelona getting close to that weird deadline in Kounde’s contract that allows him to walk away to any team he wants for free?

To help the deal, we could offer £17m for Umtiti to take Bailly place in the physios room.

fecking hell. Goldbridge has followers. Christ.
He is probably rich and successful too judging by his YT channel and the views he is raking in for his videos plus livestreams. Say what you want, he took United Stand, a nothing channel at the start from zero to 1.5 million subs... he's got people working for him now but he did it by himself from nothing, competing against much better established and bigger channels in those days. Still remember the big channels like Fulltime Devils looked down on his low sub channel. They were on 500k subs with multiple 'semi yt united fan celebraties' making videos for them and he was at 30k with only himself talking from behind a 10 pound desk and a shitty photoshopped background.

This thread.. :houllier: already on 1697 and counting. Would be such an anticlimax if he stays this summer.

Now off to the Antony thread.

Never give up guys!

Everyone seems to know the score
They've seen it all before
They just know
There so sure

That De Jong's gonna throw it away
Gonna blow it away
But I know he won't stay
Because I remember

A red devil on a shirt
Ten Hag's head still gleaming,
14 weeks of hurt
Never stopped me dreaming

It's alright, I'm from the country.
No-one should be surprised. This was an embarrassing transfer all summer. Sorry but it was. Pathetic it reached 1.6k pages
'Embarrassing' used to be one of those words that I always struggled with getting the correct spelling into my thick head.

Never confident in myself that I was spelling it correctly.

But thanks to the many posters in this thread just like @altodevil here, I think it has finally locked in!

So much thanks to all the, ahem, 'embarrassing' posters in here! :)
