Looked second best for huge periods but defence looked much better again and Eriksen played well.

Elanga, Rashford and Dalot still don't look good enough. I doubt any of them could get into Southampton's first 11.

Ronaldo looks done on recent form. Slow, laboured and not even doing the basics well. He had a good run though. Nobody can play forever.

I think this win was absolutely brilliant. We need to learn to grind a win before we can even start playing football. Southampton thought they could win, they know our lack of confidence, no win away in 7, this result and the way of it, was brilliant. There is obviously so so so much to do, but this is how teams are built, grit! Shout out to Martinez, brilliant again.

It wasn’t pretty but getting the 3 points away is always positive. ETH is slowly righting this ship.

Hugely important for so many reasons

Clean sheet is great for the back four, Bruno scoring from open play, away win, very very difficult game. Southampton were really good today so they had to dig deep

Baby steps, but a win is a win is a win. Confidence booster, and perhaps with more confident group, they will start playing the Ten Hag way? Hope that's the case, but huge win after what we all have witnessed last season.

McTominay, Martinez and Varane excellent.
Dalot, Malacia, Eriksen and Bruno mixed the good with the bad.
Everyone else poor.
I'd largely agree with that. Thought De Gea did well when he needed to make a save.

The points mattered more. Just one of those games you need to tick off and just get through. We 100% would've bottled this last season.

we've got a proper back four now......but the problem is the attack

Elanga is not a starter, Rashford is not a 9. Ronny is finished and Sancho can be dual marked out of games.

We need a striker and a winger.

Buzzing with a win to continue a bit of momentum after Monday.

Having said that we were absolutely dreadful after scoring, practically surrendered any sort of threat for the remaining 30-40 minutes. Really was a concerning performance.

Still, 3 points and that’s the most important thing for this fragile bunch.

Varane and Martinez excellent and Dalot did well but was too easily beaten at times.

Not convincing but three points is huge

Onto Leicester now

Three points, a (fortunate) clean sheet, a nice finish from Bruno, but that was pretty crap. Could just have easily been a 1-0 loss.

Seeing out that game and keeping clean sheet away from home will do us as much good as the Liverpool result
Yeah, agreed.

We'd probably lose that game if it was played last season due to panic. The fact that we held on to the lead and looked pretty much untroubled is a good sign for the future.

Great result, performance after we scored wasn’t the best we gave them too much respect but we still grind it out and the points are the most important thing.
Varane Marinez and Malacia were great as a defensive unit, McTominey was also good defensively shame he can’t pass other wise he’d be a monster.

This was never gonna be an easy game so happy for the 3 points.

We need to keep improving and working, but overall it's important to grind out the results - especially against solid opponents like Southampton.

MOTM Martinez.

Ugly game but one thing to notice is this team has shown a lack of character and fight for over a year now. Two games in a row where we actually battled and did the dirty things well.

Hopefully the quality on the ball will follow.

One thing beating Liverpool against the odds but its another thing backing it up with a win in the next game when favourites.

Dreadful away run over (7 PL defeats in a row) early days yet but we might have a likeable United team to follow again and can look forward to games again than dread them..

Needed a away result badly to get over the mental block mostly.

I'm happy enough. Not expecting us to just start playing the ball like the way he wants until a good bit into the season. Need points and results and we are getting that.

Huuuge result! Clean sheet to boot. Neve remind the performance (those will come). You can't underestimate the importance of these 3 points. Building blocks...

A win, I guess. But after we went up, wtf was that? No composure at all.
If the team can’t bring the ball up till the 6 yard line, Ronaldo is pretty basic.
We are still not playing like a top team. Good team with some decent individuals. But not a team that knows how to boss a game yet.

People talk about lack of control. We can't control any game when the majority of players are not able to hold the ball. We need at least two players up front and two midfield players who can hold the ball.
Without Martial we have none.

Good result but we desperately need reinforcements in attack. At least a winger and probably a striker too. Elanga is a long way from being good enough to start week in week out.

The negative you mention can only be done by a new midfield signing.
I am hoping if that doesn’t happen, we start to see more from Eriksen. Not in terms of level of play, but rather style of play. Too similar to Bruno right now the way he is playing.

Not a great performance, but we battled and kept a clean sheet, which is a big improvement at a tough venue. Lots of work ahead in sorting out this squad, but it's been a good week.

We looked so much better at the back today. If I never see Maguire and Shaw again, I will be a happy man.

An uncomfortable but very important win. This team needs confidence above all else and holding on for 30 mins in a tough away game will do that. Our defense held up brilliantly against a very different kind of threat than against Liverpool. But our attacking options are way too poor. I also fear for when we have to bench Eriksen. But for today it's a good win.

I can't understand the positivity here! So many worrying signs, back to how we played last year. Struggling to build from the back, losing possession too easily in midfield. Was Rashford on the pitch? CR looks pedestrian on the ball.

Defence was great. Everyone else was poor. Can't keep the ball against even Southampton ffs. De Gea is an oaf. Kept losing the possession in the 2nd half because he was obsessed with hoofing it upfield.

Ronaldo looks old and uninterested for putting us 2-0. I think he can go without concern.

There were 2 balls drifted across his 6 yard box while he was stuck on his line. Another week against a better attack and we're 2 down and our centre backs are getting all the blame.

I kind of agree. But Martinez and Malacia are working on that.

I'll the the points.
Got no complaints from our defence, it's our attackers that are too soft, and never get stuck in. They're easily taken out by a simple charge by the defender.

Martinez is good. His partership with Varane is perfect.

Let down by the midfield and strikers, but back 4 kept us in the game.

Good debut by Casamiro. Hope to see he replaces McT asap.

A clean sheet! Good, professional away performance against a very physical Southampton team. It's been so long since I felt confident in this team.

I don't know why the forwards are so rigid though, thought Sancho, Elanga and Rashford would rotate a bit more. Sancho is better on the right for me and it's good to test the opposition fullbacks in different ways.
