Paul Lambert vs Zidane( Juventus 1997)- He did a great job that night, he almost stopped Zidane and helped Dortmund win UCL as one of the most important factors on that night. Despite Dortmund 1997 was a very strong team but Juve at that time was the best team in the world. They won against strong Ferguson's United in both 2 legs at Old Trafford and Stadio delle Alpi and in semi-final, they destroyed a very strong Ajax in both legs.

Karl Heinz Riedle vs Juventus 1997- he scored 2 crucial goals against a very strong backline and midfield unit and yeah Dortmund was a champion that year.

Diego Forlan at the 2010 WC. Good player, but the best in the world at that tournament and it was glorious.

Hasan Sas felt like the best winger in the world for the entire duration, and only the entire duration, of the 2002 World Cup.

Well they had kante and mahrez so 2 great players right there .

But yeah what a mental achievement that was, doubt we witness it's likeness in our life time.
What were the odds on them winning, 3000-1 or something like that?

e - 5000-1.

Apparent one lad made £72k on his initial £50 and could have even won more if he hadn't cashed in in March.
.Just mental how that season played out, Ranieri was always the nearly man but just for that one season everything worked like a dream.
He played for Feyenoord (we bought him from Ajax to add insult to injury) and he was so very very rubbish. And believe me we've had some poor strikers.
I can't talk about this specific lad but they did have some tidy players, their captain was pretty decent for example (zagorakis).

It was definitely the greatest overachivment of international football but calling them trash is a tad harsh

Yes! That was the first Busby game I watched, and I thought he was one of the best players in the team afterwards.
Realized he wasn't from other games, but he played brilliantly in the final.
I watched the full game a few years ago and I recall the commentator mentioning that John had been getting plenty of abuse that season for his poor form and that this performance would quiet his critics.

It was in extra time I believe so, after witnessing that incredible performance, I was very surprised! He looked as good as Best, Charlton, Coluna, Eusebio, etc, and lessened the impact of missing Law.

Alan Smith vs Chelsea at home in 2005, the first match after losing 1-4 to Boro and the whole Roy Keane thing, we won 1-0 from a Fletcher header and Smith was literally Kante in that match.

Jon Obi Mikel vs Barcelona in 2012 CL semi final

Luis Garcia for Liverpool during the CL knock out phase in 2005, I remember he was great for them during that run, don’t remember much of him since.

Senderos for Arsenal during the 2006 CL knock out phases, was otherwise a pretty average CB at best.

Diego Milito in that CL final between Inter and Bayern. He must have been the 10th best striker Argentina had at that time, but for 1 single game - the biggest game of his career, by far - he was totally flawless.

Gotze and Schurrle - 2014 World cup final.

Gotze got the winning goal and Schurrle the assist. Both 'disappeared' after that.

He scored 30 in 52 for Inter that season, 26 in 32 for Genoa a year prior, he was a fantastic striker for a couple of years and brilliant against Barcelona in the semi finals as well.
Put Ibrahimovic instead of Milito in that Inter team and they ain’t winning the CL.
A proper Mourinho centre forward.

You're right, I totally ignored how well he did that season generally and maybe he belongs in a different category as a striker who worked singularly well in a specific system - but I mean, he had the genoa season which made his name and the Inter season where suddenly he was incredible, but his legacy was basically boiled down to this one game where he won the CL.

It's kind of harsh, because (having done some last-minute research) he was an effective striker who was often blunted by injury, but I totally remember him as a guy who I hadn't really heard of who turned up in a CL final and walloped Bayern Munich out of nothing, only to slide back to Serie A and slide from view again.

Ed - think this post deserves a like. Can someone with the power help out?

If the euro champion was garbage, then what does it say about the rest of Europe.

That it was also garbage?

I think there's another thread to start, about players that only functioned in certain systems and outside of those systems achieved nothing at all.

Memphis vs Brugge? (Maybe). He ruined some poor right back’s life. No, it was Midtjylland.
