Todd Boehly: "You could do a North vs South all-star game from the Premier League to fund the pyramid very easily"

The only reason Boehly bought Chelsea was in the hope that one day in the near future, his investment would bring him a giant windfall from the US.

Every thing he will say or do for the next 4-5-6 years will be dressed up as being good for the sport/club but literally just about how to make sawker among the biggest sports in the States. I reckon he'll give up if the US World Cup doesn't lead to those billions.

...... I'd watch :nervous:
You'd watch a European Super League too. That isn't the point.

The point is, how much are you willing to lose. Protecting the sport you love and the clubs from the various parts of your country is well and good, but the UK isn't the primary audience for its own league, not by a long stretch. With the current trend, guys like Boehly are merely saying things that will possibly be normal in 2030. The Premier League as an institution is powerful enough right now to stop the overall dilution, but they won't.

To solve the obvious problem of United and Liverpool players in the same team the Manchester Devils franchise should be relocated to Kent as there's no current franchise in that county. It's a huge untapped market.

I’m sorry, are you saying we need to reign in unchecked Capitalism by embracing the American model of a completely useless exhibition game and skills showcase designed exclusively to bring in money?
Look, what’s sport without the ability to blackmail a local government into building you an 80k seater stadium by threatening to go to the next city over

I like that it took 150+ posts of essentially 'feck off plastic Yank' before anyone even entertained the idea of posting their XI's.

I wasn’t alive in 1955 when Chelsea first won the league but the FA almost threatened us with all sorts of things I& we dared to play a tournament that wasn’t in line with the history of football in England. We would have been the first English club to compete but tradition and all that then x number of years European football qualification isn’t even thought of anything other than the norm.

Man Utd and a couple of other clubs such as Arsenal and Everton managed to get the FL to do away with the long standing requirement that away clubs received a share of gate receipts.

The play offs were received reluctantly by many clubs indeed Chelsea were relegated for failing to win a play off game.

Change happens and sometimes the initial idea is tinkered with and improved Or that’s the claim !

What is clear that football has to keep re inventing itself and sometimes the supporters , the owners, the players have to change with it. From the abolition of the maximum wage, to Bosman.

Football in 2022 is nothing like football was in 1922 nor should it be but come on a new owner made a suggestion as to how money could be generated for lower leagues the personal abuse he is being afforded is pathetic

Almost certainly his idea won’t be adopted but I would rather someone that at least is looking at the wider game as opposed to the majority who are say little or nothing.

Do not think it would work like that, just picking the best players from 3 top teams.

I think a system would have to be put in place that allows top individual players from midtable teams to be selected for the team if they're having great seasons, so I could totally see Toney or Zaha. maybe Trossard or Webster, getting in ahead of Chelsea/Arsenal/Spurs players in the south team for example.

Newcastle could contribute a player or two to the north team.

Would be interested to who you actually think does?

Saka maybe off the right but that'd be it. Kane & Son > Jesus & Martinelli.
Partey would get in the team, so to would Ramsdale as the keeper. Shouts or Saliba and Odegaard.

Why would Chelsea and Tottenham have a stronghold on the team?

Didn't he propose a 443 formation to tuchel? He seems to be a visionary and I hope he turns Chelsea into a Disneyland.

Not sure why it’s such a disastrous idea. It’s a fun concept and the benefit for the players would be the privilege of making the team . Most of the current stars are obsessed with NBA & other American sport and so the players will be up for this I am sure .

People only Look at American sport but Rugby league in Australia has something similar and it is absolutely huge in terms of numbers
This is not strictly correct. Rugby in Australia has both an All-star game and 'State or origin'. No one gives a crap about the all star game however "state or origin' is massive yes. Aside from representing Australia being picked in the state or origin team is the highest level of representative rugby a player in Australia can aspire too. There is also a very fierce rivalry between QLD and NSW which are the two states that are involved in the game. Players would prefer much to be picked for the state or origin team rather than the all star team

The main difference I can see between an EPL 'North v South game' and a rugby league 'State of origin' game is that players picked to play state of origin are representing their home state so there is an additional level of pride that im not sure would be felt by an EPL player who has no real ties to the north or south of England except for the fact that he happens to play for a club located their

If this is where to open, the north would comfortably beat the south.

But I hope it doesn’t happen. Keep this franchise pish away from football.

Let’s not pretend the hyper capitalist is being charitable here, it’s just like when Barcelona were sponsored by UNICEF to remove backlash when Qatar Airways stepped in.

Not sure why people are so against this? Is it just because it's "an American thing"? I'm not exactly desperate to see it but as a one-off pre-season charity game, who cares?

My only reservation is that players already play way too many games. Blame pointless international games for that. I'd rather see this All Star XI game than England 6-0 Andorra for the umpteenth time.

Lloris or Bazunu over Ramsdale. Mendy would have a shout too if he gets back to form.

As for Partey you can't be serious. Rice, Kovacic, Hoijberg all shit on him.
If Mendy gets back to form you say, you mean if he stops getting the ball nicked off him and stops dropping balls. Bazuno who has played 6 premier league games - Your clearly on the wind up

Rice is highely overrated due to hie Engligh status, and Hoijberg better than Partey - I cant believe what im hearing.

Partey is the one Arsenal player opposition fans want to be missing.

If this happens, then the 39th game will happen in non-UK territory. Who knows, maybe even a 'play off' system to determine the champions. The 39th game and play off system would be an revenue kicker, the same rational used to justify this.

Just because its a money maker, doesn't mean it should be adopted. Did they learn nothing form the super league thing??

They really are the worst, can we just put a giant dome over the US.
Oh please. Please please please.

This is just a glorified Soccer Aid, and that title was bad enough. Anything with 'all star', 'stars' or 'celebrity' in the title can get binned straight away.

Chelsea fans must see the alarm bells starting now with this boy, American owners haven't a clue. Can never read the room, look at sport differently to Europe.

I think that taking football away from its base is in long term going to make it far less profitable for these clowns.

Top leagues are obviously holding their ground, but look at the rest of the continent. Should their Superleague thing eventually come to the fore, football would come down to five-six clubs who'd be capable of winning it each year, and the rest would become unimportant.

What other ideas do people suggest doing to boost money down the pyramid?
