A spurious claim? Maybe it was just somebody with some post-it notes on a personal crusade. Maybe someone trying to drum up attention. Maybe someone claiming to be from the Royal Society who just managed to con @TheSexDoctorUK into believing them

MPs have voted in favour of nationwide “buffer zones” outside abortion clinics in England and Wales in a major win for abortion providers.

A “buffer zone” stops anti-abortion protesters or any other types of demonstrators standing outside the clinic or hospital or in the near vicinity.

MPs in the Commons voted 297 to 110 in support of an amendment to the Public Order Bill, which legislates for buffer zones. MPs were given a free vote on the issue due to it being a matter of conscience.

Clare Murphy, chief executive of the British Pregnancy Advisory Service (BPAS), a leading abortion provider, said it was “delighted” politicians had voted to “protect women, protect healthcare staff, and establish buffer zones”.

BPAS has campaigned “tirelessly” for nearly 10 years to eradicate “anti-abortion clinic harassment”, she added.

Some good news from England and Wales.

Good for y’all. I once had to escort a very close friend through a throng of protestors in front of a clinic. Terrible experience.

I could have posted this in the 2022 US Elections thread, but this one matters here as well.

As it stands right now, Michigan, Vermont, & California have all codified abortion access into their respective constitutions. Montana & Kentucky are still outstanding, but are on the right side thus far.

England: ‘Misconceived’ prosecution over abortion pills dropped

English prosecutors have dropped a case against a 25-year-old woman accused of illegally procuring an abortion.

The woman was reported to police after she underwent an emergency caesarean section 31 weeks into her pregnancy and was found to have evidence of abortion pills in her system.

She had denied charges of “administering poison with intent to procure a miscarriage” under the Offences against the Person Act 1861, which remains in force in England and Wales and was in force in Northern Ireland until 2019.

However, prosecutors last week told Oxford Crown Court that they no longer considered it to be in the public interest for the case to proceed, The Times reports.

Judge Ian Pringle questioned why the “misconceived” prosecution had been brought in the first place. Prosecutions under England’s legal framework for abortions are rare and have come under greater scrutiny in recent years.

According to reports, the woman said she had accidentally taken the misoprostol pills which had been lawfully prescribed to her in her home country of Portugal.
