The rules allow a pen for such a move and I think it's bollocks. It's a reflex move to protect the head… not a conscious attempt to block an attempt on goal (thought we had a discussion about concussions in Teamsports); if his hand hadn't blocked the ball his head had. Kudos to the ref for making the sane decision, I'm sure it's coming back to bite him in the arse.
You’re allowed to head the ball in football.

Unexpected decision, really. Wouldn't have complained if it were given. But as you say, his face was in the same place, so no way the ball would have gotten past him without the hands.
If he gives that penalty we might as well shut down this game we know and love called football

So defenders should punch the ball clear rather than head it? Because concussion.
No. The key part here is the hands didn't increase his volume. They are in a natural position - protecting his head, which is allowed - and they don't increase his volume. Ergo, never ever ever a foul

Since when is protecting your face an excuse for handling the ball?
Always - since it's not making his body "unnaturally bigger". It could of hit his hands in front of his belly and it - by the rule of the of the law - wouldn't have been handball dependent on the actually action. Or more specifically, maybe, say his knob?

Remember Benni McCarthy (I think) trying to claim that when he did the same against us. We rightly got a pen because obviously its handball.

The ball doesn't magically go the same place as if it hit your head so it's blatant interference.

Hand in head is not a natural position. Why don't he just put the hand in his head before every shot then?

That’s not the rule though. Putting your hands in front of your face is not a natural position. Haven’t seen it but sounds like a bizarre decision.

He moved his hand towards the ball and intentionally played it with his hands. That’s a handball.

The “unnatural position” and making yourself bigger stuff is about when the ball hits an arm, rather than an arm playing the ball.

Well what determines 'natural' - smash a ball at 100 peoples face and see what they do.... does that determine what's natural?

He’s likely missing the World Cup now.

This season has been hampered by injuries all season and is so frustrating.
