I don’t really understand why he sees Eriksen as a midfielder in a two. He isn’t a good ball carrier, he’s not a particular physical presence to screen, and his passing range is far more suited to the final third. It’s very strange.
Thats why you dont manage manchester united. He is not quick anymore to CAM and can easily be marked out of the game, playing deeper allows him to dictate the pace of the game and keep better shape.

having got back in the game, it would be nice if we don't concede a third in the first five minutes of the second half...

The thing is we have no options when Antony is injured. Anyone we play there is shite. Elanga, Rashford, Sancho, Bruno all struggled.
I would personally put Rashford left and Garnacho right. At least Garnacho is more two footed and has the ability to take a man on. He can even come inside on his left.

Rashford is always a passenger as a right winger. Same as when we’ve tried Martial there.

It's the caf way to fixate on a scapegoat. He's been fine , pretty much as good as eriksen.

He's playing as a 10 with a poor forward with no movement and interplay capabilities in front of him.
Fine? He’s made less passes that De Gea (9 complete passes in the entire half) and has been anonymous defensively.

Rashford embarrassingly shite on the right as ever. Plays with his back to the entire Villa defence so constantly offside, absolutely brainless.

Ronaldo and VDB are more like cones than footballers out there.

I only saw up to 10 minutes because my legitimate way of watching thr match stopped working and I couldn't find another, but have we improved from the start where we were horrible? Gained control etc?

The only good player here has been Casemiro. He's battling out there.

Ronaldo, VDB, and Eriksen were complete shite again. Lindelof was pretty bad as well.
Agreed. The spine is weak and slow, held together by one player. At least Bruno runs his socks off to help out.

And that’s probably why you don’t either, because he gets run ragged with his lack of physicality and defensive awareness. He’s given time on the ball because he’s not a reliable ball progressor, and his “dictating the pace of the game” is overstated — Casa has been doing a better job of that in the past few matches.

    Well it's certainly worth trying.

In reality, we are not good but also Villa scored from only chance (plus free kick). I can see us winning this

C’mon man. He’s been brilliant after the shakey start. Some aggressive tackles and usual quality passing. Not his best game but still brilliant.
Yeah, I was sightly premature with that shout. He ended up returning to the norm with some massive crunching tackles.

Rashford has never played well on the right in his life.

You can't purposely nullify your most dangerous attacking player by putting him in his worst position, but that's how dumb we are.

The first goal is totally on lindeloff. Martinez makes a step ahead exactly when the pass to Kylian MBailey comes at full speed and he could never recover. But martinez was trying to cover the massive gap lindeloff caused by going nomans land.

he had to cover him several times, even In the last EL game.

You can see villa are nervous and dropping deep now.

I think we are bribing Martial on but I’m worried we are going to put him on left or right wing. We need him as striker. Let’s see if ETH takes Ronaldo off.

Not sure why Donny even started, especially after that terrible performance. How is he ahead of Fred, who, at least, gives us some legs in midfield — Donny usually hangs up top near Cristiano, leaving Casemiro and Eriksen exposed.

Less said about Cristiano, the better, but at least we have a genuine crisis of options up front at the moment.

Martinez reminded us that he is human after all, but he had grown into the game. How badly are we missing Varane to pair up with him at the moment :(

It has to be said, 2:1 is not the worst score to have after such a half.
He’s ahead of Fred because he’s a natural replacement for Bruno in that he play as a CAM. Ten Hag clearly wants Eriksen’s passing in midfield over Fred’s industry.

The problem with Donny is that he’s a very different player to Bruno. Bruno wants the ball all the time whereas Donny’s movement off the ball is the probably his biggest asset. If we could make passes into the box (rather than crosses) then Donny would be a threat.

I would actually also take Shaw off, looks tired and another lazy tackle could see him receiving a red.

Aside from the bad touch that ended up with the free kick, I don't think he even did much wrong at the start. I don't think he could be expected to do much more than he did covering Lindelöf's side after he went walkabout for the first goal.

But he never dictates the pace of the game, he looks exactly like an AM being asked to play CM. He doesn't impress me there.

Ronaldo, Rashford, Eriksen, VDB, Lindelof are all too soft and weak as players, can't win duels, can't press, no burst of pace and it makes us easy to play against
Stop lumping them all together. This is simply a VDB and Ronalo collaboration. I don't think people truly realize how important it is for the striker to press. Bruno has been protecting Ronaldo in a lot of performances. He has had to press rabidly to make up for Ronaldo's lack of it. Eriksen as is also not a fantastic presser at the moment, but this won't be an issue if we didn't have Ronaldo.

What's happening right now is that Villa are easily able to get the ball out of their half since thier CB's and DM have all the time and space in the world to pick out passes or drive. It's leaving Eriksen and Casemiro exposed, as they consistently have to decide whether to drop deep or risk being cut open by engaging much higher, with the knowledge that they will receive almost no support from VDB or Ronaldo.

In attack, neither are providing options for the rest of the team. VDB's control of the ball isn't great either. Add this to the fact that Rashford isn't great on the ball and you realize our entire attack is coming through the left hand side, based mostly on a youngster who was supposed to be getting bedded into the team but is having to cover the ineffectiveness of his other attacking partners.

This is why I've always believe playing Ronaldo as a striker never made sense. I don't think he's great in his awareness to press either and still not sure why he isn't just pushed out wide.

It's winnable, but our front line is very questionable.

You're probably looking at some Eriksen/Casemiro moment to drag us through. Garnacho looks dangerous, Ronaldo is on another planet and Rashford is not a right winger, especially from the start. I think we might have a number 34 on the pitch but he's just making up the numbers.

Exactly. I understand we are short of players but I hate this idea of putting your best attacking player out of position to accommodate others. Garnacho obviously prefers left but I certainly think he can do a better job on the right wing than Rashford.

Given how little Ole used him I think it was pretty clearly a board signing that none of our Managers since have wanted to play. Weird transfer.
true but I am referring to the level. The vast majority of Ole's signing had been cack for us (Maguire, AWB, James, Heaton, Ighalo, Telles, Sancho, Diallo etc)

On the other hand Ole loved benching his most expensive summer signing. He did that with Sancho as well. God knows why he did it.
