I reckon Maguire if fit will play every freaking minute. Southgate thinks he is Franz Beckenbauer
Hopefully he does well if he plays. I know he’s been poor for a while for United, but he generally turns up for England. I feel a bit sorry for him given how much grief they’re giving him.

Kalvin Phillips in the squad with his 40 minutes(?) of playing time this season :houllier:

Reminds me of when they picked Wilshere for a squad despite him playing so little and being injured.

Can't believe English managers are still so short-sighted when it comes to players outside the PL. Tomori is easily the best English CB right now, especially with Maguire struggling so much.

At least Maddison is there, he should really be starting but it'll probably be another Graelish situation.

Considering penalties are one of the areas where England should do better, JWP should have been included just for that.
Gallagher, Maddison and Mount is way too similar. I would have added someone like Toney just for his physicality .

Philips hasn't played at all and yet he is in. Tomori is one of the best defenders in Serie A and has performed better than all of the defenders included.
Maddison and Mount I get, but Gallagher's one of the few genuine 8s England have along with Bellingham.

Wilson is miles better then Abraham, it's not even close. Don't think there's much between him and Toney either.
Yeah I always felt he only picks one of them,Gallagher is the surprise selection and JWP surprise omission for me.

How Maguire and Coady are in this squad and Tomori and Smalling (who are arguably the most in form CB's England have currently) is a joke. But then that's Southgate for you. I hope England get dumped out in the group stages and he gets a long overdue boot out the door, it's what he deserves.

Like someone just said on SSN I don't think it helped he had two iffy performances against Chelsea in Champions League

Southgate says Walker should be available for the final group game. I would predict one of the two line-ups. Think it will be a toss up between Saka and Foden on the RW and whether he decides to go with a back 3 or 4. I'd probably guess the latter for Iran but he'll revert to the back 3 against tough opposition on paper.

Pickford
White, Stones, Maguire
Trippier, Rice, Bellingham, Shaw
Saka/Foden, Kane, Sterling

or

Left wing-back, he played there before for Arsenal and England.
Cant speak for arsenal as dont watch those nobheads but when he played there for England it was. universally criticised as an absolute shocker by Southgate.
Using that logic, Maguire can fill in if Kane gets injured. He played there last week

Does Maddision have a role in England's preferred formation? Same question for Mount

I think he'll try and go 4 atb, get shown up and then have to revert back to the 3.

Yeah I'd have thought he'd take JWP over Gallagher - but neither will really play so I guess it doesn't matter... though at least JWP could be brought on to take a pen.

Why doesnt Darren Lewis just get a job as a political Journo? He never asks any questions about football.

If Bellingham gets injured, i'd rather Gallagher plays rather than JWP

Yeah I worry about Gallagher taking a penalty

There’s a couple of dodgy picks, but I don’t think there’s any glaring omissions, personally. Our team is a bit stale.

I think Maddison has been playing as a right winger coming infield, he could do that with someone more direct like Sterling or Rashford on the other wing

Yeah decent enough line up. Suprised at the Gallagher criticism though. He's more dynamic than JWP and will offer an alternative if Bellingham gets injured

Southgate said Walker should be fit for the final group game and James towards the end of the tournament.

He should 100% be in the team, especially over someone like Coady, but the starting CBs are like the few players who do really well under Southgate. Walker, Stones, and Maguire have all done pretty well at the WC and the Euros under him.

England and US are in the same group.....and i think both managers made some really odd choices for their squads

England's midfield has zero creative players and how do you select Phillips who hasn't played in months until just yesterday or day before? Gallagher has been poor for Chelsea

CB pairing, much like the US, is going to be an area of honest weakness. Maguire isn't a regular at United and he shouldn't be in the squad for England based on merit. He and Stones together is going to be an issue.

How do you NOT select two left footed LB's? i mean that's a bit fuking mental if you ask me.

Glad Maddison and Wilson are in but for others:
  • Phillips has 3 sub appearance all season, JWP should be there instead.
  • Gallagher has been more miss than hit this season but there is a struggle in that area.
  • No Tomori who plays regularly in the UCL and has been great but we have Coady instead and Maguire has hardly played.
  • Would have liked Toney but if England are only playing 1 striker its difficult to get everyone in.

The squad picks itself mostly, barring maybe 23 to 26 which isn't likely to impact our chances considerably.

As always it'll be about getting the balance right. I think Rashford will play a lot, and should do because we struggle to get behind defences without him.

As usual everyone will have 'their' best XI and moan when it's not picked, comfortable in the knowledge that they can't be proven incorrect

Don't think this is a issue. Chilwell would have gone but Trippier is fine at LB if needed.

As others have said the betting thing has probably made his mind up about Toney if he hadn't already. Abraham has not been great this season. Tomori has not been as good this season as is the case for A C Milan. Gallagher does surprise me. Glad Maddison is in.
Tomori has been in great form this season but because he had a bad game in the UCL people are pushing this narrative.

based on form....Maguire shouldn't have gone and honestly Rashford on form shouldn't have either. Tomori should have went based on form. Chilwell is left footed and you can't discount that fact by putting a right footed player on the left hand side at the back ESPECIALLY b/c they invert the wingers already so that takes away somewhat of a threat on the left if Shaw can't last the tournament which we all know he won't

He was utterly wank in the UCL this season in both games against Chelsea (which Gareth attended). Wouldn't be a shock if those were the only games of his Southgate watched.

Chilwell is injured.

Apart from Tomori, who do you think should be in the squad? I don't think there's any other players who stand out.

Rashford easily deserves to go and Chilwell is injured. Trippier is fine at LB.
