He hasn't been that amazing in this world cup so far but he turned up tonight. Genius.

If not with a world cup win, then his story has to end against either Brazil or Portugal. Argentina's greatest rivals or his own personal rival. Anything else would be doing an injustice to the last chapter of the career of the GOAT

35 and a half years old. Has lost a few yards of pace. Is the size of a middle school kid. And still absolutely incredible!

He's almost two years younger than Ronaldo but he seems to be ageing much better, which is a surprise considering the mad lengths Ronaldo is willing to go when it comes to fitness.

For years the Ronaldo-Messi arguments have led to far too many people looking to tear down the other in this clash. I think Messi has always been the better of two, for all Ronaldo's magnificence but I can't imagine watching this pair and not wanting to savour it. Whatever Ronaldo's second spell at Utd may have done to his legacy at the club there is no denying the career he has had, and if you don't allow yourself to love every minute of watching Messi's last dance you are missing out on something special.

That was glorious tonight, and feeling the love that the crowd and even Rio and the BBC guys were giving him was a special moment.

Never liked him. Out of the so called elite players he's been my least favourite. Don't like his constant play acting and dives and he often goes missing when the opposition have got a bit of something about them.

The best footballer of all time( alongside Pele and Diego), a complete attacker in every sense. His athleticism is declined a lot from his peak but it can’t take his brain, intelligence and decision-making. Enjoy his moment as much as you could do.

Not sure he's stepped up like that when his team was about to hit panic mode after the Aussie goal since Neymar left Barca. But still, it is only Australia , but in the grand scheme of things, in a straight knockout game in a World Cup, it's comparable to crumbling massive advantages to Roma and Liverpool in second legs.

None of this faffing about corner time wasting either, he wasted time the Messi way.... dribbling and creating clear cut chances for Martinez to miss

One of the best performances I’ve seen at the World Cup by a single player from him tonight.

It’s amazing even at the end of his career he’s still the best. You can tell he’s really enjoying his football this season.

The difference between him and Ronaldo at this stage is that he's understanding and changing his game to allow others to be more involved because of his presence and skill.

Ronaldo on the other end just wants to do everything himself and believes that it will click just like it used to. Ronaldo can start using his vision (watch some of the counter attacks he started for Real under Jose) to allow others be expansive on the pitch.

This is a terrible post.
The bolded part is absolute bollocks. Changing his game ? He's played like this his entire career, he's always been the best playmaker on the planet as well as the best goal scorer on the planet. You obviously haven't seen enough of Messi if you think that.

Messi, Pele, Maradona, Cruyff, Ronaldo Nazario the 5 goats, ranking them should not be allowed.

If Brazilian Ronaldo was not as unlucky with injuries he would be up there with these guys as well

EDIT: actually maybe he deserves it already I'm going to add him.

I wonder whether the past "GOAT contenders" (be it Maradonna, Pele, Cruyff, Di Stefano etc) were still regarded as a part of the very best players in the world when they were mid 30's. They might have been, I've no idea.

But to be gliding past players who are 10 or 13 years younger than he is... just wow.
He's so much better than anyone else in this generation,

so much so that the fact that Ronaldo is even in the same conversation with him for a lot of people is a huge credit for the Portuguese.
To be able to match the achievements (if not the ability) of someone who's better than you at almost any attacking aspect of the game... kudos to him.

I'm disappointed to have been dragged into the Messi vs. Ronaldo debacle for the first time in my life,
but people who think Ronaldo is better are either biased or blind.

It's just a typical Messi performance that we've seen hundreds of times before. That's why I'll always argue he's the most talented footballer to have ever played the game

I dont think Argentina can win it, but Messi can be proud of himself so far in this wc. He looked a lot more often like his younger self today.
He may past his peak, but this is the best WC he has performed, imho. Class and clever.

And that Lautaro should never wear Brazil's shirt again.

I wish he did though

haahhaa. He's just cursed. Hope it goes the opposite to Higuain who was good in everything but shit at the finals.
 It's just Argentina best performance was in games when he wasn't on the pitch.
