One of the most under rated goalkeepers.

Brilliant with his feet, great shot stopping ability.
Always had question marks about his height but hasn't seemed to have impacted him too much.
Just a brilliant keeper, but can't see United getting him, at 33 he would surely be a backup option.
Van Der Sar was 34 when we signed him

He was one of a kind though, a truly world class keeper.
Not sure Sommer is quite in that category, as much as I like him.

But I guess keepers can keep going for much longer than outfield players.

I wonder what has changed, because in the summer he rejected us right?

He rejected us in the summer because he didn’t want to become 2nd choice. Maybe he’s been given assurances this time that he will be the number 1?

He was supposed to come in as number 2 in the summer
Really? I thought he was coming in with a genuine battle to DDG for the 1 spot.

I would have thought this Jan would be the same. If we signed him tomorrow do we really think we'll wack him in goal from the first game back? Unsure.

World Cup? Could see a lot of players not wanting to make a move right before the tournament, especially if there was a chance they might play less than they currently do.

Or we could keep De Gea who is ten times the 'keeper.
Nah, he's consistently been one of the worst in the league at almost aspect for the last number of years, with a small improvement this year, but still nowhere near good enough anymore.

I honestly think we have bigger issue to deal with now than goalkeeper.

Is he a great organiser of a back line and being generally pro-active during a game? That’s usually a pretty good attribute for a keeper, especially the older keepers with more experience.

DDG is a good reactive keeper with his reflexes and shot stopping ability, but on the other hand you get someone like VDS who is like a great marshall at the back who can guide defenders to the right places and sense impending danger before it happens.

From videos I’ve seen, his passing range exceeds DDG‘s for sure.

I've never known some fans have a blindspot like De Gea. I'm not sure whether its because its hard to analyse goalkeepers (many people basically judge them off what flashy saves they can remember) or whether its simple fondness for a player who's been around a long time. Either way, I can't ever think of a bigger disconnect between how a player actually performs and how some fans perceive him.

Imagine a striker who finished the season with 5 goals, yet the fans were arguing he was the best in the league. That's basically what's happening with De Gea. He's ranked 19th out of 22 keepers at shot stopping so far this season and people are claiming he's doing well. Its bizarre.

Anyway, Sommer is not a long term solution and in previous seasons has usually been solid rather than amazing. But he's having a stonking season and he's a more natural fit for ETH's style of football.

Not sure how much we'd be paying for him, but I can't imagine we'd pay more than £5-10M for a 34 yo keeper out of contract in the summer. Given that Sommer's transfer fee + wages would probably be less than the £18M a year we pay De Gea at the mo, feels like a smart deal.
A couple of good performances with some wonder saves are all that De Gea needs to be declared back to his best.

From what I gather he's very highly rated amongst those who watch the Bundesliga. Think he's been in strong form.

33 isn't that old for a goalkeeper, he could without problem have 5-6 years left of top football in him if he takes care of his body.

I think most people here who watch the BL don't rate him as a top level goalkeeper. It will be journalists on Twitter where I think you'll find most of his fans.

Clearly ETH has had a good look at De Gea and come to the conclusion that he is going to hold us back.
That is not clear at all. He has been very complimentary about DDG, and with good reason, seeing as DDG has been playing well and shown improvements in both distribution and sweeping. The anti DDG agenda from many United fans is a bit weird.

I too am a De Gea sceptic, but this is a gross simplification.

There’s no doubt that he’s looking a lot more comfortable with the ball than he’s been since LvG and Franz Hoek were sacked. Whether that is enough is open to debate, but one would have to be pretty blinkered not to acknowledge it.

I think this stems back to the first few games of the season, when ETH must have given instructions to build from the back, and DDG made it look like he was playing hot potato any time the ball came near him. He has clearly improved since then, but he will never be a natural with the ball at his feet. For those that remember Schmeichel, it is also sad to see a keeper that lacks so many of his attributes. He commanded his area, came confidently for crosses, scared strikers in a 1 on 1, had a great long throw for distribution, and even scored goals. DDG is a great shot stopper, but is mediocre at best in all of the other areas.

It would be stupid of ETH to tell him he's finished at United before we have a replacement in situ, but I do think that longer term he will be replaced by a more rounded keeper. I think the wages, and requirement for first team guarantees may determine whether he is kept on after the summer. In his favour, ETH probably has higher priorities at the other end of the pitch to splash the budget on.

Eh, it's not really an anti DDG agenda, he just isn't all that good. Take away the first 2 games and he is bang average for the season, include them and he is one of the worst in the league. And this is a model that takes it all into account as he specifies in the next tweet to quantify how a goalkeeper does.

I admit he has been better with his sweeping and passing but I don't think it's enough to keep him especially when the overall package is still below par.

Nothing that much against De Gea imo. Bigger rivalry in the squad in any team can raise football standards. That's probably what United could use atm like no one else.

Its not an "agenda" to want United to replace under performing players. Keeping underperforming players is the harder position to understand for me.

No idea if this fella is the one - however I think people are underestimating the difference it will make having a more modern keeper who play the sweeper role, organise his defence and claim crosses etc.

I think losing a few wonder saves a year for attributes such as these would be well worth it.

I like Sommer. He’s always at his best when the games matter most. Seems to be very strong mentally. But he can lack consistency and doesn’t have ideal height. Tough to say wether or not he will work out for you. But he’s a good keeper deserving of a chance to prove himself on a higher level.

I love De Gea, I really do, but having a proper ball-playing sweeper keeper would improve our overall play tremendously and I'm surprised so many remain oblivious to that.

He is one of the main reasons why Bayern's recent record against Gladbach is abysmal (for their usual standards) and set the record for most saves in the Bundesliga in the last match there.

So I guess he could win you the match against City, but might give you a hard time against Southampton.

The potential benefit in replacing De Gea as #1, I absolutely get. But in that case I'd be warmer to the idea of just securing whatever younger talent we want long-term rather than opting for a not-particularly-outstanding 33 year old we'll likely have to replace again within a couple of seasons anyway.

I realise there may be budget constraints at play, but still. There's less value in replacing De Gea if it's with a short-term solution.

Always thought he was a good keeper, great athleticism and good at stopping penalties, as proven in the Euros against France. Bottom line- if ETH recommends him then he’s a must!

Why is it always called an agenda when people simply want to see the team improved by replacing players with better ones?

Yann Sommer is not better than David de Gea. It's an agenda when people want to replace players with lesser ones.
