It's funny how a year ago I would have said Messi was the one who was having a fall from grace and Ronaldo would prove himself the GOAT at this World Cup.

It's the end of an era unless Argentina and Portugal meet in the final. Although it's more than likely going to be England and Brazil for me, it would be fun to see these two old bastards going head to head one final time before they bugger off into the sunset.

I just think he is psychologically incapable of putting the team before himself. He is so ridiculously single minded. It's what has made him arguably the goat.
He can't change just cause he'll soon be 38. Looking at it in hindsight, he was never going to retire well. I am not even sure he'll enjoy his achievements.

That’s because the push to start the quarter final starts now. There will be more pressure on the squad after a monster win like this than there would have been with a dodgy 1 goal win tonight

Aside from all the bitterness and the fact that he is a total prat, I wonder if his mental health is going to be ok with this kind of end to his career. He's been the star of every club he's been at since around 2006 and I don't think he's the kind of guy that copes well with being ignored or criticized.
Yeah, Ian Wright called it a few weeks ago.

A battle for 3rd place would be apt and a wonderful penultimate match.

I don't think it's possible for Santos to be proven more right than this. Gomes was phenomenal and the team looked like proper contenders, much better than anything they showed in the group stages.

What a strange way for Cristiano's career to fade away. First the piers Morgan stuff and literally getting sacked, then Messi has his best WC in forever and is actually performing, and now Portgual look like a much better side without him. It's come to the point where Cristiano Ronaldo's best shot at a WC is by sitting on the bench and getting it as a participation trophy.

I am picturing it right now. Messi scores a hat trick and Ronaldo subs himself off, flapping his arms around in anger and leaving the stadium.

It's actually sad. I think he emotionally has not matured despite his age.

Gosh this is pure comedy. Ronaldo gets dropped for a major Ro16 game at thr WC and Portugal thrash their opponents. Unbelievable.

Tbf many of us did think their squad looked excellent and that he was holding them back.

Makes me think though, how damaging the earlier parts of his career have been to lead to this absolute meltdown.

Seems the absolute magnitude of the spotlight he has been under all these years has ended up doing a lot of harm. What's he gonna be like when he simply stops playing?

I could be overthinking it but you have to wonder what goes through a guy's head when you are lauded as the best player ever for several years, and then what happens when this rapidly starts to go away.

Translation - They talk talk but it must not be easy to be going through this. I haven't always liked Ronaldo, I learned over time to like him not only for his talent but for all that he can withstand criticism, when he suffers for simply being what he is: Cristiano Ronaldo.

Most shameless player on the planet.

I'm sure he was seething deep down even though his country just had arguably the best team performance of the tournament from anyone.

Says volumes just how much better his sides, club and country perform, when he's not taking up space on the pitch

He just can't handle not being the man anymore, in a way you have to feel sorry for him while acknowledging he has always been a bit of a cnut.
feel sorry for him not understanding that there does come a time where he wont be the best in the world and he has to adapt with that. He still thinks he is the best, this is not a “great mentality”, this is denial. He was on top of the world for 20 years. It’s time to adapt to being in decline and close to retirement. What’s so annoying about him is his body language, must be annoying his team mates too

He will claim all goals scored by Ramos today as Ramos was the one to replace him in the starting line up.

Even when he doesn't play he gets more attention from you lot and countless others on social media than anyone else. The obsession has reached disturbing levels of weird and unhealthy, and that's coming from someone who can't stand the man and is delighted to see him leave United

I truly feel sorry for him to be honest. Not sure he deserves being called a prick, cnut here. Here is one of the GOATs realising he’s nowhere near the top anymore. Letting his team celebrate an amazing win where he wasn’t needed.

No. I don't act like we never won before or after him - that's your hang ups. I act like he was a catalyst for a dominant period for United because he was. He was the star man in said dominant period and we were better during said period (hence dominant) than we were before and won more then than what we won after. United's dominance is directly correlated with him developing into best player in the world.

Stop trying to have conversations (I remind you - you quoted me), in which you try to tell people what they are trying to say - instead read and understand what's being said. Cantona having an immediate impact as a 25/26 year old and Ronaldo having to develop as a 17/18 year old is not something I should have to explain in a conversation about football, for feck's sake. A catalyst for something doesn't have immediate impact as a prerequisite.

Those stats prove that every season Ronaldo had at United were good. Again, stats don't happen in a vacuum. I assume you're an adult, so I expect you to be able to contextualise things. Ronaldo came to United a teenager, and for the first 3 years, he wasn't a starter. Marcus Rashford, for example, in the season he broke out - scored 12 and assisted 2. Eden Hazard joined Chelsea as a 21/22 year old and as a starter for them.

I don't want to engage with you further because more often than not - exchanges on this forum tend to lead to me gaining/learning something or are, at the very least, amusing. I don't believe any of this will be possible with you, so I wish you a good day.
Keep moving the goalposts when presented with facts. Did you forget 98 to 2001. Where we won the trebble and 3 elp titles in a row. That's our most dominant period.

It wasn't just Ronaldo. He was part of a fantastic team. But why did we keep on winning after he left? And also why did you not answer why we became dominant after adding vidic and evra? Maybe they had something to do with that too? Also Edwin van Der Sar was a big part of that. But no you keep on pretending it was all Ronaldo.

Instead of being so defensive maybe put your ego to the side and read what is being said and you will learn something. Did I do that last part right? You know attacking the messenger instead of the message.

It's almost impossible to keep your sanity and stay at the top for so long in any competitive profession without having that stubborn streak and never-say-die attitude. Some need more time to accept reality. I just hope when he comes to terms with it he'll apologise for being an utter prick during this phase.

I think it can be expected for some to revel in what has been a disastrous and embarrassing month for Ronaldo after that interview.

he’ll never apologise. Come to think about it, he might never even come to terms with it.

still a legend. Annoying, but a legend.

I could be overthinking it but you have to wonder what goes through a guy's head when you are lauded as the best player ever for several years, and then what happens when this rapidly starts to go away.

I actually think that putting up with this sort of his behavior from everyone around him for ages is what brought him where he is right now.

People have adjusted to whatever he wanted, failing to help him grow emotionally. His behavior should have been nipped in the bud, long before he became what he is now. I mean, it is generally accepted to be the case, but why does it have to be, that certain behavioral traits will be accepted with succesful people, while not so easily accepted from others? I don't believe being a massive egoistical cnut is what made Ronaldo one of the best football players of his era. But everyone brushing it off, accepting to be insulted and accepting to be less valued than Ronaldo as human beings because he is better football player has obviously led to him seeing himself as some sort of demigod in his head.

Nobody, regardless of how talented they were, should be allowed to grow into such selfish person.
