All the papers tomorrow it seems going with the expected narrative of United stunned/pipped/beaten by Klopp and the whiteness of his teeth.

Personally I would like Toney from Brentford, solid number 9 and shouldn’t cost a ridiculous fee.

I assume that Ten Hag has seen the same as the rest of us, which is that despite his stats he just isn't a very good player, and certainly not worth the outlay given our other needs.

Eth should start doing exact opposite of what our scouting department tells him to do.
These clueless bunch unearthed AWB and overpaid for Harry Maguire.
Yeah except they didn’t, the guys in charge of the scouting team were got rid of last year. Carry on moaning though.

Its not been a great start for Ten Hag. He wanted Darwin Nunez, the club kept Ronaldo. He wanted Timber, he ended up with Martinez. He wanted de Jong, he got Casemiro. He wanted Gakpo in the summer, as well as Antony, the club dithered and pissed about and paid over the odds for Antony so couldnt get Gakpo. Now Gakpo has gone too.

Its 2nd and 3rd choices all over again and its fecking annoying.
Thank you Nostradamus. I was doubting myself till i read your post.

The return to form of Rashford (for how long who knows) and the emergence of Garnacho (who is better than both of them) means this signing was surplus to requirements. Need a centre forward asap.

I don't care that they bought him but it is annoying how those feckers do transfers. In one day, quickly and for "low" fees. I bet that we would pay at least 60 mil for Gakpo.

Disagree. He is clearly a very good player. Feels like Liverpool are getting a bargain considering his great output in the Dutch league and the World Cup. Far better track record than Anthony, who we paid over double for!

Fair to say Klopp and Liverpools player assessments have been far better than ours.

Klopp is building a new front line, Nunez, Diaz, now Gakpo, and they have some others on the edge of the first 11. They have a good buying structure and philosophy. Klopp usually buys forwards with character so it will be interesting how this works out.

Martial, Antony, Sancho need to have big second half to the season. We can't be seen to just drift with our forwards. Need some guts, toil, desire, physicality in our forward line and I am not sure who, aside from Rashford occasionally, gives us this.

I'm just not fully convinced by Gakpo quite yet.

Yep. Clean, simple, effective. Liverpool get it right over and over again.

Every time we are in for a player, the hype goes on for a month and if we do sign them, we pay massively more than anyone else.

haha....Martinez is the better of the two. Casemiro is exactly what we needed positional wise and brings a ton more experience which is helpful to a young squad. yes, De Jong is talented but i would hardly say Casemiro plays second fiddle.

Gakpo is a position we don't need and just isn't a wise investment

The entire striker force is now a quarter of a billion in and it’s still being carried by Salah. Now they’re spent on Gakpo when their midfield is the weakest link.
I wouldn’t be buffing up Liverpools deals as of late. If it’s anything like Diaz and Nunez then expect Gakpo to miss sitter after sitter every game.

The effeciency of Liverpool recruitment is something to behold.

They have us bent over time and time again in that department.

Rashford is very much in form, Garnacho has come through and been a breath of fresh air whilst ETH is doing with Sancho what he did with Rashford so we’d have three players all wanting to play on the left and all best there so why would we need to spend on Gakpo when we NEED a centre forward ?

I’m sure Gakpo will turn out decent although I don’t think he’s better than Jota or Diaz once they’re both back but he isn’t what we need and I think it’s just been lazy journalism because Gakpo was our back up choice to Antony whilst also sharing the same agent as ETH.
Would be smart to get Sancho pushing Anthony for the right forward slot. For me, Sancho played his best football for Dortmund there.

Like that lad Nunez that they signed for a low fee?

They didn't do it in one day. It's just they have a professional recruitment team who prioritise getting deals done discreetly and efficiently rather than boosting social media engagement with protracted transfer banter. Liverpool have clearly worked on this for a while but the difference is they have no leaks and the stories come out when the deals are already done.

Why is his price so low? I mean I’ve been meaning to ask since it was mooted, but didn’t think it was legit
They desperately need money in the short term so no use in haggling over for a massive unrealistic fee and potentially missing out on a cash windfall right now

Good player but not what we need right now. We need a no 9. Not that keen on Felix at the reported prices , but Gonçalo Ramos for even less than Gakpo might be worth a punt.

Would he be available for less?

I think losing out on Gakpo will be a lucky miss for us. Would have been way too much money for a guy who has no track record in the position we allegedly wanted to sign him for. Definitely a talented individual but his talents lie in literally the only area of the pitch in which we are absolutely stacked. Would have been crazy to spend that sort of cash when we have so many immediate and pressing needs in other positions like FW, GK and CM.

I've unfortunately watched him a fair bit this season, as I thought this was a foregone conclusion.

He's a good player and it's a shame he's going to Liverpool, but he didn't feel right for us at this moment.

He's best as a LW in Holland but I don't think he's agile enough to play that role in the Premier League. He also doesn't do a huge amount of off the ball work.

He can't play up front by himself and ultimately, is best in a two or behind two. He'd be perfect for Spurs and how they play on the break.

Deadly shot (far better then Nunez) and good at set pieces (although not as good as what Liverpool have).

Good player, not what we need right now.

Nor am I, i'm definitely not writing him off though or saying that we 'dodged a bullet'. From what I saw at the WC he was technically very good at keeping the ball, clever, great finisher but also lacked a bit in terms of imposing himself (kind of like Sancho at the moment). Obviously did really well with his goal tally but drifted a bit at other times.

One thing is for certain, having just Rashford and Martial as the only two recognized 9's is a big problem with Ronaldo gone. Gakpo at least would have been another attacking option even as a makeshift number 9.
