1. Maradona
2. Pele
3. Messi

I give no credence to longevity

Peak talent is the only thing that should be considered when looking for the greatest footballer.

Could even argue Ronaldinho (and not Messi) should be up there with Maradona and Pele on a pure talent perspective
Ridiculous, Ronaldinho at his peak even admitted teenage Messi was better than him, Ronaldinho was a great player but different levels completely. Messi’s peak was one of the best ever.

There's been a huge influx of threads on this forum that basically amount to 'Messi is the best'. He's done great and all, but still

Thats great that that's your opinion

It's also great that you show how humble, modest and a real leader (by elevating those he was mentoring) Ronaldinho was (in case you don't understand, I'm saying Ronaldinho was just being the nice guy he is and letting Messi have the glory without wanting attention on himself)

You can't compare Messi/Ronaldo to players from different eras. Champions of today are stronger than yesterday's. It's like how would Muhammed Ali do against prime Lennox Lewis?

1. Messi
2. the rest

How can so many pick Maradona as the goat when he spent so much of his career nowhere near the top level? he scored 12 goals in his last 6 seasons ffs. Was banned for 15 months for drugs and became a journeyman that nobody wanted for the last quarter of his career.

Ronaldo and Messi are so far ahead of anybody else it's not even close.

Directly under the sun... NOW!
I've only been watching footies since 1999, so I can't comment on anyone I haven't actually seen. And since 1999, I've only watched the PL and CL. Since my opinion on this matter means Jack shit, I will anyway list the 5 best players I've seen.
  1. Messi
  2. Ronaldo
  3. Ronaldinho
  4. Henry
  5. Scholes
Shout out goes to Zidane, Xavi, Eto'o, other Ronaldo, Robben, KDB, Aguero, Iniesta, Kaka, Keane, Ferdinand, Vidic. Phew... So many... So many more...

The four GOATs.

In your opinion who's first to fourth?

For me

1. Messi
2. C.Ronaldo
3. Pele
4. Maradona
 . Love how you casually named Cristiano among those potential goats. And then again casually named him in front of Maradona and Pele.
Admit it, you think that he is THE goat but you didn't want to be too obvious.

Maradona single handedly dragged Napoli(who were almost relegation fodder), to the Serie A title, back when Serie A had elite talent and teams.

Could peak Messi/Ronaldo have dragged Wolves to a PL? No way to know, but I doubt it.

Also Maradona's WC 86 performance remains the best performance ever on the biggest stage. Probably the highest peak any footballer has ever shown, that too coming back from an injury, with shite pitches, where defenders tried to break your leg at every opportunity.

So for me : Maradona > Messi > Pele > Ronaldo
You speak as if the rest of Napoli team are sunday league players.

That's waaaaaay exaggerated honestly.

Maradona's Napoli was sort of Wolves-level in his first two seasons there; they finished 8th and 3rd.

Comparing to current PL teams, I'd say first scudetto was more like dragging a Tottenham above City/Liverpool, second one dragging a Chelsea.

Still very impressive but not *that* lopsided.

Yeah, i haven't seen nearly enough of Maradona - compared to what I've seen of Messi but that notion that he almost single handedly dragged "relegation battlers" to the title is brandied about often. Again, i don't even know enough about that Napoli team to have an opinion, though i find it hard that anyone could achieve such a feat.

Sometimes, context is also needed. It's akin to saying "...Vardy dragged Leicester to the prem title" - i doubt Messi or CR7 could do that! Vardy had a stellar support cast (or maybe Vardy was the support cast?) in Kante, Mahrez, with a few others playing out of their skins (Drinkwater, Albrighton, Huth, Morgan, Okazaki, Fuchs etc.)....and it all just aligned with the rest of the "traditional top 4" experiencing bumps all at the same time.

Not taking anything away from Leicester because it was one of the best stories, ever, during my time of watching footy....but a lot of context also explains them going from almost relegation battlers, straight to winning the damn thing!

How weak Napoli were is up for debate, there is a range of midtable they can be compared to in today's game.

However at the time Sacchi's Milan were receiving the plaudits of Peps Barcelona in that they were playing a new brand of dominating, pressing football https://syndication.bleacherreport....go-sacchis-ac-milan-took-down-europe.amp.html

Juve and Inter were comparable to Real Madrid in the same Pep/Mourinho/Ronaldo era

And simply put Maradona led Napoli to beat those star studded teams to 2 Serie A titles

1. Pele, Three world cups over a 12 year period. Did things no-one had done before, lit up the world game for over a decade. All with a heavier ball, rough pitches and virtually no protection from referees
2. Messi, slightly over Maradona since actually winning the world cup. Great longevity, wonderfully creative footballer and as far as we know was not on drugs for half his career
3. Maradona, mesmerising player in his prime, huge fun to watch. Nowhere near as professional as the other 3 in his off pitch antics. Like Pele he had to put up with a lot of rough treatment and his ankles suffered for it in the long run.
4. Christina Ronaldo, no world cup puts him below the other 3 although leading Portugal to the Euros in his 30s is a huge feather in his cap. Ultra professional and squeezed every ounce out of the talent he naturally had. As a role model of how to be the best you can be as an individual he is an example to any athlete in any sport.

You also had Verona and Sampdoria winning it in that decade. Not trying to downplay Maradonna, its just its not the only underdog tale in that era.

That’s the only debate here.

I’ve seen both through their club and country careers. So it’s Maradona by a mile.

It's a bit silly even putting Ronaldo in there right now during a time when a lot of people on here will be blinkered simply because of the fallout of what's just happened with him at our club and also his decline over the last year or two. It's tough to take half the posts serious when you have people saying he shouldn't even be involved.

Yes, a guy that won 5 CL's, 7+ league title's and other domestic cups across three different leagues as well as the Euro's for his country while also being arguably the most instrumental part in all of that while scoring over 700 goals in the process really shouldn't be in the conversation, right? This place really is mental at times

How do you explain the 5 or so years after his drug ban then? I think he averaged 2 goals a season and went through 3-4 clubs. He spent half of his career in Argentina.

Nobody seen these players outside of a major finals or a World Cup the coverage just wasn’t available back then, all these people saying Maradona is the goat have barely seen him play it’s hilarious.

Messi and Ronaldo have raised the bar so high in terms of longevity that being world class for 3-4 years just isn’t enough anymore they’ve been at the very top level for almost 15 years nobody comes close.

Ya, winning with Napoli in that period sounded heaven defying until you realized that both Verona and Sampdoria had done the same in that same period. Sampdoria even outperformed Napoli in the European Cup by reaching the final.

We even had Leicester doing it a few years back but no one is saying Vardy > pele or messi
