Dubravka and now Butland, the excitement is getting too much. Is Heaton really that bad?

just hope no stupid loan fee.

He's nearly 37, when he last played with any regularity it was over two years ago and was picking up injuries then. No doubt that keepers can play on longer than outfield players, but it feels like a needless risk to not get extra cover in. Imagine De Gea twists his knee and is out for a month, do we really want to be relying on Heaton?

From all accounts, a very nice guy, probably just not quite good enough to be considered anything other than part of the training set-up or an emergency backup.

That said, I'd like Heaton to get a cup appearance or two for the fact he started here over 20 years ago.

Great goalkeeper, honestly still has potential to be world class. Wouldn't surprise me at all if he replaced DDG within 2-3 months. He's THAT good. Stoke/Crystal Palace (albeit on loan) are idiots for letting him go.
At the end of the season, we'll let De Gea go and have twice as good as a keeper in Butland signed permanently I reckon. You can quote me on this at the end of the season, I'm THAT confident.
Spot on

Sensible post. Every big club has a senior keeper, a number one and a back up.

Haven’t we still got Tom Heaton? Has he even played a game yet? And we’re signing another GK

Heaton is 37. Stop being so dramatic. This is the replacement of Dubrawka

So that’s

Victor Valdes
Lee Grant
Tom Heaton
Martin Dubravka
Jack Butland

All since Van Gaal. Am I missing anyone?

Fair enough. I would have wanted a better number 2 personally (but then is there anyone available?) - but it is what it is.

Welcome Jack. Hope he still has some of the old, international cap-worthy form. If only we could sign outfield players just as smoothly.

What's the point of having Heaton around if he's deemed such a massive risk to be on the bench?

People who understand football better than me will tell me you "need" an experienced 3rd choice keeper instead of a youngster, but I've never quite understood why.
It just seems a great way to waste a salary higher than a youth teamer would get.

Maybe some McClaren input on this, he was manager of Derby when Butland had a loan spell there in 2014. To complete the link it was a 6 game spell as cover for an injured Lee Grant.
