6-year-old in custody after shooting teacher in Virginia, police chief says

A 6-year-old boy is in police custody after he shot a teacher at Richneck Elementary School in Newport News, Virginia, Friday afternoon, Police Chief Steve Drew said in a news conference.

"The individual is a 6-year-old student. He is right now in police custody," Drew said. "We have been in contact with our commonwealth attorney and some other entities to help us best get services to this young man."

Drew said the female teacher -- who is in her 30s -- was shot inside a classroom and added that "this was not an accidental shooting."

imagine the home situation of this child if they have already made the connection between guns and hurting people.

The mind is spinning at the moment.
How does a 6 year old take a gun in the first place without the parent knowing - know how to lift, shoot and fire at someone - want to kill a teacher

I'm sure their logic is if the teacher had a gun, they could have defended themselves and shot the 6 yr old

I really shouldn't have grinned when I read that but didn't manage to hold myself...

The American mindset regarding gun possession is absolutely insane.

At the age of 6 my favourite thing was to draw little treasure maps and then use the map to find the 'treasure' in the yard or wherever we were.

Of course, we didn't have guns. If we had, I might have hunted people for sport apparently.

Do you guys reckon there will ever be a change regard guns in the US?

What will it take for the majority of them to give up on their precious freedom to defend themselves?

Well having their guy lose an election led to an attempt to a literal overthrow the government, so I’m gonna say it isn’t likely.

Is there a younger generation coming through that might push it ahead does anyone reckon?

If 20 6-year olds being slaughtered didn’t do the trick, I can’t imagine anything will.

There should be because when the Constitution was written in 1787 you could say there was a need for the right to bear arms, but in modern times no need whatsoever and other countries have proven that changing laws regarding guns does make a difference.

Never held a weapon in my life, but I bet that the sensation of shooting one as a youth
(hopefully in an empty forest or something) must be really exciting for a lot of them.

I wonder whether the 15 years-old me would have been curious to go get a gun at the closest supermarket if it were possible.
My parents never spoke to me about guns being bad because who the feck thinks about them in the first place, right?

But I'd like to believe I'd have had the common sense to step away from purchasing one.

Sandy Hook was when I realised it's a stupid and broken country. Up until then the shootings used to make me sad, ever since I just shrug and say "meh, this is the society they want over there".

We need to flood these classrooms with good 6 year olds with guns. At the end of the day you’re not going to stop 6 year olds getting guns, it’s just not feasible. So it’s imperative that the best guns are going to the best 6 Year olds

It's got to the point where you think meh, so what. They don't ever want to give up thier guns so it's thier problem. It's not the first time and it won't be the last.

Same. I can’t help but think of that old computer game Lemmings where they’d just walk off a cliff unless you stopped them. America and its guns feels a bit similar. They just keep shooting each other because they can’t stop themselves.

So much FREEDOM though right. If only a good 6 year old with a gun had been there to stop the bad kid with a gun. Isn't that how this works?

So what happens to the kid then, out of interest?
Probably nothing although N Carolina does have criminal responsibility at 6 years old, no other states have it that low though (this happened in Virginia and according to google it's 14 there). It's the parents who should be going to jail anyway.

Sounds like a plan. Pretty sure there will be a call for that, or at least for primary teachers to now pack a handgun to protect them from these evil monsters
