It's really not. It's a trophy that could jeopardize our chances of top 4, which are more realistic. I agree that the EL is winnable, and it would be great to win a trophy, but top 4 via the league is easier, especially if we don't have a squad that's running on fumes.
So finishing top 4 is priority over winning a major trophy because it might be more realistic - the logic is nuts

One way to look at it is Casemiro gets a well deserved rest.
If we are going to win trophies again we have to learn to win games like Arsenal without certain players through the season. We lost Roy Keane in the semi in 99 and the rest is history.
Looking forward to Sunday, to sea what the boss comes up with.
Loving every bit of this year with the more ups than downs.
Keane and Scholes.

Tough draw, but that was a great EPL match and why the league is so great.

Annoyed this AM, especially after seeing how the free kick was moved up (what a strike).

Also, any talk about the elbow to Licha? That was brutal, in my humble opinion.

I worry about how tired we will be for Arsenal, but can't wait for the match.

Onward and upward....

Personally I thought the elbow was a red, we should have had a penalty and the freekick should have been disallowed after VAR took a look at where it was taken from but after everyone made a massive deal about Bruno's goal last week we were never going to get anything last night.

I was a bit surprised Casemiro started given the situation with his yellow cards and l thought ETH would start with Garnacho and bring Rashford on as a sub if he had to. The subs came on a bit too late if we were looking to finish the game off and keep players fresh for the Arsenal game.
It looked like one of those matches nobody really wanted to play on a Wednesday night at 8pm in Croydon and -3C - a bit like the Liverpool - Wolves match where they scored the goal and nothing much happened after that. Some good defending and goalkeeping, just thought we would rotate players a bit more.

Feels weird to still be this angry about a result the next morning. Haven't felt this way for a long time, good sign as it means I'm believing in this club again.
feck it, shit happens. We regroup and try to win against Arsenal on the weekend.
Didn't help we got screwed out of penalty, lost our best midfielder and conceded injury time equaliser. God its gonna be hard to bury this result until next week

Not surprised with the result and performance given that our squad is very thin and surely we will have games like this till the of the season.

Not blaming ETH to play Casemiro, trusting McTominay cost previous managers a job, let alone a game. It's just unfortunate that he got suspended for Sunday, I will take that in exchange for a win and three points but failing short to defend a lead, conceding a late goal and losing Casemiro just felt bad.

Even with a wrong call for a penalty and with our xG suggesting we should score at least two goals (2.08) we were not constantly testing Palace's defense for longer period of time and we made some things more sloppy than usual. But I can take it, we will face setbacks like this given the schedule.

What disappointed me was two things: we deviated too much from our usual style and I saw young players like Antony and Garnacho arguing with or suggesting Bruno and Eriksen about a game and that is not a sign of team spirit we showed lately.

In terms of style, we didn't dominate the center of the pitch with numbers and we rarely saw fullbacks taking narrow positions, which wasn't the case in previous games. Also, we were very slow with moving the ball and played fewer diagonals and switches of the play than usual. And we applied too many crosses from a byline that are easy to defend against, while we were previously working to have better angled crosses from a half-space under the ETH regime.

The only blueprint from ETH style was a goal scored: winger stretches wide, pinning full back (Rashford), midfielder (Eriksen) attacking space that opens between FB and CB with Palace (particularly Doucoure) not aware of a danger losing him and we scored from a cut-back pass - something Pep teams are master of it.

Never really went for the second goal in the second half and paid the price.

Really poor second half, nobody to blame but ourselves, blaming it on the referee or VAR is just making excuses.
We are far too complacent and happy to sit on 1-0 leads which is bloody arrogant. Just because we got away with it previous games doesn't mean you keep doing it.

Care to articulate? Its not an uncommon opinion, I know some United fans personally who think he's awful - I wouldnt go that far but he is a liability at times

He's undoubtedly an effective player but is he the sort of player you want on the pitch when you're leading an away game 1-0? For me, it comes down to decision making and maturity and he is lacking in both areas.
Or maybe you're not. Hell, even our scouts alluded to it before we signed him, it's a well known statistic, he just glosses over it as we score/make a clear cut chance when that pass does come off.
Simple eye test version: Watch the game with concentration, make a mental note of plus or minus every time a player does something non-routine that has an impact. If you did that yesterday, you wouldn't need to count the pluses and minuses to realise that Bruno racked up the pluses like nobody else, especially in the first half. For every overhit pass or ball loss, there's maybe 4 or 5 positive involvements - not just breakthrough passes that make it but also plenty of other things - smart runs, small creative flicks, interceptions, ball recaptures. He does good things all over the pitch, and I'm not sure you're seeing the sheer volume of those (not always of course, but most certainly yesterday). That's the main counterweight, not that he scored. This is why he consistently has had such extremely strong key offensive stats.

If on the other hand you're focused on mispasses and ball losses and get a warm jolt of recognition every time you see them, confirmation bias will run amok with your intuitive perception of his performance.

The day after and I still feel frustrated. Draws and losses are part of the game. However, injury time goals are really hard to swallow. Awful time to concede a goal, no time to get the winner. I can't wait for Sunday's game, yeah, the players and staff need rest, but the Palace game needs to get out of my system.
We had chance to get winner but unfortunately it fecking well hit Casa's thigh

It looked like the congestion of fixtures played a factor in that second half.

A few decisions went against us, but as has been said here, we had more than enough chances to nick it. Some bad decisions being made, likely the result of the tiredness.

It was a gamble that did not pay off. Frustrating but let's kick the Gooners into submission. Xhaka is due a red card!

Shit happens. Move on. It's a marathon not a race. Palace away isn't an easy place to go. They are always up for it.

Need some squad depth badly. We have 19 more PL games to play in 3 months , in addition to the cup matches. Unfortunately I don't think we have the squad depth to compete in all fronts. Hopefully Barca knocks us out .

I think it did. We were certainly playing within ourselves, trying to control things, barely stepping out of first gear. Not that we played poorly, but it was very much a slower tempo.
Fecking disgraceful we had to play game in first place,Premier League cost us two points and our best midfielder so thanks for that

Didn't look like it so much in first half
No. It was, curiously, in many ways a very dominant performance. I mean, there was no doubt that you were watching a game where one team was clearly and obviously of superior quality to the other. When the momentum ebbed in the second half, it didn't really feel like Palace was getting back into the game or taking it over, it just felt like United was conserving energy and gently but firmly steering the game towards stasis, a mode of fewer things happening. That we allowed a goal like that so late - that's basically just luck. It can always happen when you haven't put the game away, and yesterday it did.

If I try to pinpoint a weak area, it's how few big chances we produced. For the first time since the WC, that looked like it did a couple of months ago. Our xG backs that up too (1.39). Can't draw too many conclusions from a single game, but the logical issue to home in on there (but which seems to receive little attention) is how did Weghorst impact our attack? Much too early to conclude, but not a promising start either in terms of individual performance or systemic impact.

Our lack of ruthlessness in these tight away games really feck me off,now we have blown any hopes of pressurising them due to this

We failed to beat palace with him playing 90 mins. If our forwards are off it against Arsenal as much as they were last night, then it won't make a difference who starts in midfield.
His head probably went a bit last night and is probably the reason he didn't properly get connection on that last minute chance

Glass half full take: we played like shite in the 2nd half, lost control of the game, still almost saw it out. A draw after a worldie free kick. Defense looked really strong all night. Lisandro is back. Maybe this will give us more desire to get a result v Arsenal. AWB looks excellent and suddenly a very competent back up. Had several chances for a 2nd goal, unlucky.

Glass half empty: Casemiro lost for Arsenal match. Antony, I’m convinced, is a complete bust, adding absolutely nothing. Completely one-footed. Depth is an issue. So much for “title contender.” The drop off between Eriksen/ Casemiro to McFred makes me want to vomit. Rashford is now in his own head. Lost several chances due to lack of ball movement among the forward line. Wout is an abysmal fit. He offered nothing beyond competent hold up play.

Can we bring Sancho back and send Antony to wherever he went? I much prefer Sancho to Antony.

- Arsenal missed two key players.
- Last time United win @ Emirates was 6 years ago.
In the Premier League yes, but we beat them March 3/1 there in 2019 in the FA cup and let's be honest that game last season when we lost there, that team was dire and playing nothing like we are now and we all mostly agree here that team this time last year had down tools for Ralf, which is what I base my opinion on, as no point in using games prior 2021 as the teams are different and different style of play from both.

As if you were to take home form into and just the Prem, Arsenal should just forfeit the game at OT as they have won there once in 17 years, but no they don't because they come here like their fans thinking they can win, which some of our fans could learn from and stop making out it's some kind of hell and also we have beaten them with lesser players even with "Partey" in the team, granted it was OT, but he was there, just as he was the season before when we got a draw there.

All I was trying to say, why go there with a defeatist attitude ? As you may as well watch Operation Transformation if you are in Ireland or Bowls: World Indoor Championships if in the UK, if you think we are just going to get beat and have no chance in hell.

I reckon it will end in a 1-1 draw, a tight, cagey match, as both have a lot to lose if they go all out attacking and lose the game.

Yeah, Palace had so much luck with that amazing freekick. We were really unlucky with Casemiro's chance. Fine margins, fine margins.

You joke, but referees will use that to play safe and give us no decisions and pundits will keep saying that they got rub off the green against City. I won't be surprised if we are talking about the Rashford goal next season as well.
Im fully serious. We weren't getting a penalty last night no matter what. It was pre determined and that can't be how football is reffed. Reffed by narrative

Was seeing constant Ten Hag abuse in that thread, Casemiro being called brainless and all kinds of names, all it takes is one bad result and this place turns to a clown show.
Every bad result and football managers are all out on this forum. This people would have made every right decision so no one can make a mistake as it’s not in their nature. They are not human but perfect transhumans using their keyboard to show us what is the next phase of evolution.

I thought the way we were pinging it around 1st half was amazing, fractions away from being devastating at times.

Thought Rashford had a very poor game.

Liked Weghorst, he was involved with play, running about generally being a nuisance, whether he scores or not? but in terms of general play a marked improvement on Martial.

I love Fernandez but he is such a luxury, wastes possession and chances too much, Eriksen really shows the difference, but then I don't meant to complain, like I say I love Fernandez so I accept his flaws.

I've seen the Mctom penalty appeal again, and it's a PEN! The officials have bottled that. Imo it was the controversial goal in the Derby that has swayed that call! Ref has made a error because it was a foul in the box , same foul he gave outside of box for palace free kick. I hope now the officials have got it out of there system and we don't get screwed like last season at Arsenal.

This is definitely a concern. We could actually do with losing to Barca. It would allow us to recover for league games. I think we are good enough to get top 4 if we're fit, so Europa League, while nice to win it, is not a priority, imo.
I agree 100%. It will be HEARTBREAKING to play our backup squad against friggin Barca (we don't get to play them too often), and give up on Europa League, but for the long-term rebuild of the club it will be so much more devastating to miss out on top 4 and champions league next year. We need to concentrate on the EPL top 4. Winning Europa League is also a way to get to UCL but the chances of that are so much thinner compared to fighting for top 4...

Unfortunately, I cannot imagine EtH throwing away Europa League, on purpose.

The ref and the VAR were both horrible. Definitely cost us a penalty. But the unfortunate reality is, while we could have won this game with a decent ref, and it would have mattered a lot, this was just the first sign of what's inevitable - we have too many games for the squad we got, and exhaustion is going to kill us. Very disappointing, because EtH has this team firing from all cylinders. If he were supported, we would be doing great.

Jesus it’s doom and gloom in here. These matches happen, even to title challengers. We are still on the way up.
