As expected, after all the drama of the summer settled down, Xavi was obviously going to bring him back into the fold and he's been very good. Expecting another summer of rumors but he's crucial to Barca and loves the club and won't be moving anywhere.

Frenkie de Jong is almost an anagram of 'reoffending'. I'm afraid it's Frenkie de jOFF, for me.

This guy has been so clear from day one that he’s happy at Barcelona

The facts that happened last summer which are: us having his main Dutch manager and wanting him in his team, the way Barcelona treated him when they obviously wanted to get rid of him, Barcelona kinda officially accepted our bid to get him, us having good transfer window and seeing that he’s gonna play next to one of the best DM in the world, the very high salary that I’m sure our team offered him … if all these factors never convinced him to join us then I’m sure he won’t next summer especially after winning the domestic double and maybe treble with Barca and him being by far one of the best 3 in the club beside Araujo and Pedri … even if we won 2 or even 3 trophies this year

Of course unless there’s dramatic decisions regarding their lawsuit with the corruption case “which I don’t think there will be ” I’m not even 1% optimistic that we could get him

Also I really don’t like that in every occasion he’s been asked about joining us and he’s answering “ no I don’t think so “ while smiling … I really feel uncomfortable every time I hear this answer from him or Barca officials I really really wish that our club issues a statement saying we tried to get De Jong but we are not interested anymore so these repeated questions and speculations could stop

And of course he will say “ you never know “ because he likes this saga and he likes being under the spot light so he said this sentence to make sure that he will be asked again in the future

Why his this even discussed, he literally had I love Barca tattoos, and has said in literally every interview that he is going nowhere. I do t want anyone regardless of how good they are if they are this adamant that they do not want to join us, it’s just plain weird the love in for Frenkie. There are many other quality options available.

It would be a bit weird seeing Frenkie in a Utd shirt next season, with ‘I love CF Barcelona’ tattoos on his arm!

The big difference between last year and this summer would be the trajectory we're on. No CL last season vs. CL in the summer. A new coach last season, an established, successful coach this summer. Barca is also more successful, so there's that. But nonetheless, things changed. Whether that leads to a different outcome is yet to be seen, but we should be be more attractive relatively compared to last year.

Manchester Utd never lose, just run out of time

The other fact that you are ignoring is that Barca owed him 17m that they were trying to get him to leave behind. Probably more than an entire years wage that we would have paid him.

Obviously Barca is his preferred club. But for all we know he would still have been ok with leaving considering everything you've listed there in your paragraph...IF they had paid him the money they basically screwed him out of. Barca very publicly refused to do that (to the extent that they threatened legal action against him) so we'll never know.

I believe that 17m will be reduced a bit this season, but not by all that much. Most of it is back-ended into the last season or two of his contract I think. Will be interesting to see if they'll try to sell him again, and whether this time they'll pay him that money.

List of Frenkie De Jong alternatives (no.1 will shock you)

Its a very nice comparrison. The thing that highlights more than anything though, is that there really isnt an obvious alternative, because none of the mentioned excel at as many things that De Jong does.
He is both very press resistant, drives the ball forward, can take on a man and is a very good passer.
If our midfield pairing was Casemiro and De Jong it would be the best in the world.

Thanks for sharing - interesting findings. Kovacic will have 1 year left on his contract this summer - would Chelsea give us a good deal there? I've always felt him to have a few Frenkie-like traits.

He's not on the list but Dani Ceballos, statistically excels in just as much as De Jong. He's been pretty good for Madrid this season and some Madrid fans want him to start over Kroos. He could be a free agent this window but considering his poor stint at Arsenal, I'm not sure we should be after him

was watching el classico yesterday and the announcers were saying that Barca budgeted for a deep run in the CL, and that failed. then they budgeted for a deep run in the EL and that failed. they also said that Barca apparently still have to clear out 200 mil off their wage bill.

and, yes, they mentioned this when FDJ had the ball and brought up a transfer to United.

no way i see this happening, but curious what levers Barca will pull in the summer if that wage bill stuff is true.

So frustrating there seemingly isn't another player we can get with the same profile. Can't believe for one second there's not an alternative dribbling ball progressing CM alternative

Where would Eriksen and Tielemans rank on that list? Eriksen is our current number 8, and bringing in Tielemans as a free cover would allow us to spend elsewhere. Do they have similar attributes to De Jong? I imagine they pass more than carry compared to De Jong.

Can't decide if Tielemans just needs a new challenge or IF he just isn’t good enough

Eriksen has high progressive passing like De Jong but he's a poor ball carrier. His pass completion also suggest he's not a consistently good passer like De Jong

Tielemans is also a good progressive passer. Hes more accurate with his passes than Eriksen but not as good as De Jong. This also applies to his ball carrying. All of then are pretty press resistant though. This is all based on stats

For context
Progressive passing
Eriksen - 7.78 per game
Tielemas - 7.32
De Jong - 7.98

Pass completion
Eriksen - 78%
Tielemans - 82.4%
De Jong - 89.2%
(Eriksen and Tielemans play long balls more often which could be why they are a bit far behind De Jong)

Ball carrying- progressive carries
Eriksen - 1.58
Tielemans - 1.31
De Jong - 3

Ball carrying - Take ons
Eriksen - 0.82 take ons attempted with 41.7% success
Tielemans - 1.17 with 64.7% success
De Jong - 2.18 with 68.9% success

Surely there must be someone else who has progressive carries and take ons that aren't massively inferior to De Jong

It painful to say but no one does it to a high level like him, closest players I've seen that comes to that profile are kovacic, bernando and Camavinga. Two of which are highly inconsistent and one who will never play for us.
