He played very well second half. Creative, and we didn't know whether to follow him or drop off him. He asks difficult questions when he goes roaming like that as long as there are runners which in Son and Kulusevski there are.

Non entity in the first half but that was probably a team thing.

Not entirely sure whether or not that was a man of the match winning performance, however.. he’d create so many chances for the likes of Rashford and Bruno.

Important game for them, he looked hopeless until we fell apart. That's it with him I think, he waits for the game and the chances to come to him. At the very top players have to go and force themselves on the game. He can't do that.

Keep a clean shit tomorrow, United is my final bus
I've been his biggest critic at times, but I saw what he's capable of in that second half in terms of dropping off and building up. He was probably the best passer on the pitch, ahead of every midfielder. That assist for son was so good, you couldn't imagine any of our players pulling it off. His other nearly assist for son too was very good.

I'm still not sold because he's not the style of player I like, but if you're a manager he'd be a dream of a player to have when he plays like that.

Bit harsh, he looked like there only capable footballer at times, and then just gained control of the game.

Great player but I wouldn't be paying 100+ million for him. I feel like he's definitely a centre-forward on the way down. If City didn't have Haaland now I reckon they wouldn't even be looking at him again this summer

So you don't think soon to be EPL record scorer is one of the very top players?

Very good player but I just can’t stand him and that fecking gormless face of his.
He’s miles ahead of any of our attacking players though.

Nonsense, he has done this a lot throughout his career. What about his performances against City, the best team in the league? He is one of the few players that City are scared of playing against.

Can't believe people are questioning Kane's ability/value. Not only did he create more chances by a clear margin, but he also covered more ground than any other player on the pitch

Played well I thought, from exactly the sort of deeper positions I don't want our CF dropping into. No thanks.

Well, from playing in a deeper position he has also scored 8 more goals than Marcus in the PL

That is because Tottenham have zero creativity. He will play further up for a team with more creative outlets.

He is both their best goal scorer and best creator.

In the end, he is the second highest goal scorer, scoring 24 goals across 21 individual league games. Does it really matter if he drops when he scores that many and so consistently? His longest goal drought this season is 2 games. Incredible goal scorer. Now, imagine if he plays for a team that actually creates for him?

Yep he did. 4 of which were from penalties, 7 of which were from set-pieces.

And goals aren't the only thing we need from a CF.

Most goals he's scored in the last 5 years if I'm not mistaken, with 5 games left. That too for a shite side.

We could absolutely ask him to stay further forward. But given what he does when dropping deep is one of the current version of Kane's best qualities, it's hardly good that we're talking about immediately limiting a prospective signing by asking him not to play to one of his main strengths.

Kane can play well when dropping deeper but if he is told to stay up front and be a striker he can also do that. He can also still score while dropping deep. Kane can do it all as a striker.

Yep, scored 30 back in 17/18 in the league. Overall, in all comps, he scored more in 20/21 with 33, but he could beat last seasons 27 total. Only one away from that.

He was completely anonymous first half.

The way he plays, he wants to receive the ball where he can turn, run and pick his pass. If he cant easily find the space to do all that he does nothing. He's got no fight in him to go and win the ball and create the space. Haaland is the best example of a player with the right mentality, he will go and scrap and force himself on the game.

He both creates and scores a hatful of goals every season - what more do you want from a centre forward?

Great second half, anonymous first half.

Still not sure if he and Bruno wouldn't take up the same spaces if he came here. Bruno offers far greater workrate, Kane more goals.

I'm sure he can. But given he's often at his best when dropping deep these days, and has obvious limitations in terms of pace and mobility, I don't see any reason to think he can now play the advanced role as well as he plays the deeper one.

Pace, mobility and pressing ability would be nice. Or even some of those qualities.

Which isn't a diss at Kane, he's class and more than makes up for those weaknesses. Just the wrong profile for our team.

He doesn’t want to play with his back to goal against physical CB’s putting his body on the line like he used to. That’s fine but we don’t need what he does now. We need a proper CF.

That's not really the point is it? You're not going to spend all that money on Kane to upset the balance of your team, shift your captain around and still need to sign players to make best used of him - it's not a good idea.

You don't score what he does without being mobile.

What Kane lacks in explosive pace he more than makes up for in build up play, positioning, anticipation and elite finishing.

He's just ridiculous, it's nuts that some people are against the transfer.

More important than a guaranteed 20+ goals a season?
If it's a choice between a) guaranteed 20 goals but guaranteed lack of pace and pressing or b) guaranteed pace and pressing and the potential for 20 goals, then I would much pefer the latter.

Oh I don't doubt he makes up for it with his good qualities. Kane himself is class.

I'm saying that in our team in particular, I would prefer to see us add the pace, pressing and explosivenes rather than what Kane offers. It isn't about him, it's about what suits the way I want our team to play. I've had enough of us trying to work around attackers who don't suit a pressing game.

And relative to some of the younger strikers we've been linked with, he clearly lacks mobility.

Anonymous until we fell apart and his best work was in deeper positions where we don't need him.

We've already got Casemiro and others declining from their peak, we don't need another past their best.

He’d be a very good but very expensive short term signing, just like Casemiro. But he wouldn’t turn us into title contenders let alone winners. At some point we have to build a team and accept that will take time, we’re not just one or even 2 players away.

Under Pochettino, Kane was an elite no. 9. Then when Mourinho came in, he became a "9.5" (9/10 hybrid) to great effect and has been since. He also started playing the same way for England as he was for Spurs.

Now in a perfect world we would sign the pure no. 9 version of Kane. The current iteration may just be playing in positions we don't want him to. So the real question (the potentially €100m question) is:
  • does Kane play like a playmaker because he is really good at it and it is for the benefit of his team and with the blessings of his managers or
  • Does he play like a playmaker because he has lost a half yard and the physicality that he feels he needs to operate in the half spaces on the shoulders of the centre backs so he has adapted accordingly.
I have misgivings about Kane and Bruno in the same team, but they are both outrageously intelligent footballers so it wouldn't be that surprising to see them adapt to one another and dovetail quite nicely. The fact that Bruno recently put in some excellent displays in a deeper position adds credence to this.

However, if Kane can still play as a conventional 9 like he used to, then it makes him a much lower risk signing for me.

Changed my mind now. Kane is proven, and his playmaking is second to none, as far as a striker can go. But watching Haaland against Arse, damn it... I long for a striker like that. Powerful, a bully, fast and dynamic, and good finisher.
Yeah only trouble is he will cost €150m

My only concern is that it seems our core players are mostly past or approaching 30 years of age (next season)

Varane (29-30)
Casemiro (31-32)
Eriksen (31-32)
Bruno (28-29)
Kane (29-30)

Perhaps we should focus on bringing in someone younger to avoid another major rebuild in 2-3 years time?
I totally get the concern about all these players ageing and declining at same time, however also get the point about making the most of them in their prime.
