That doesn't mention anything about a pay-as-you-play contract. It just says he will take a pay cut from his current £375k per week current contract and get performance-related bonuses on top of it for things like clean sheets, which every keeper gets anyway. Every report has said that the new deal will include a pay cut for De Gea, but the last I'd seen said he had refused a £200k per week offer so the base pay is not likely to be below that.

FYI, this is taking the info from Rob Dawson's ESPN report. Ducker also reported the same thing. With that said...
Why would we be paying a goalkeeper £200k to be a backup? Think this is bollocks. We wouldn't be offering him a contract if ETH didn't plan for him to be first choice next season even if there is long term interest in Raya and Costa
I wouldn't necessarily assume that we'll go down to £200k. We'll see what the figures are when de Gea renews, but at this point, we've no reason to speculate and then react on the base salary.

Such a large cut seems impossible. Guys like Ederson are on 100k p/w base, Alisson is on 150k p/w. There's no way DDG will drop to 100-150k p/w. My understanding is that we get a bunch of headroom from cutting potentially 200k p/w on player wages. So why not do it?

Forget backups, we shouldn't even be paying our starter 200k p/w.

EDIT

Please do double check my math here, but given the way we amortize contracts, a 200k p/w reduction in wages is the same as a new 25M player on 100k p/w. If we got rid of DDG entirely, then we have a 91M / 5 years to work with. That's some variant of a new 50M keeper on 150k p/w wages.

We shouldn't be offering De Gea a penny over 100k - even that feels generous. If he isn't happy with a drastic cut in wages and the prospect of having extremely stiff competition for the spot, shake hands and wish him all the best.

Given that we're potentially being linked with keepers like Raya and Diogo Costa, keepers who are either at their peak or are ready for a step up into a top club, I doubt that we'd be willing to give de Gea such a high base salary. That's tells me that we're going to go low enough that we'll need a ready-made replacement for de Gea. Otherwise, we'd be looking at lesser keepers or none at all.

Even if we don't know the exact wage, it's unrealistic to expect De Gea to drop from £375k per week to say £100k per week without even having any assurances that he'd be our 1st choice gk. I'm sure De Gea could find another club that would be happy to pay £100k per week for one of the best goalkeepers of the last decade. With that in mind, I don't see why speculating that the club likely wouldn't continue to pay De Gea one of the highest gk wages in world football only to put him on the bench would be so strange. Seems quite logical to me. If we are planning to buy an alternative to De Gea for next season, then it's unlikely we would offer De Gea a new contract in the first place. There's probably a couple names lined up as contingency plans in case De Gea doesn't agree to renew for whatever reason (which realistically he probably will whatever that wage ends up being).

He couldn't seriously think his position as number 1 is secure surely.

I actually wonder whether his current contract has a guaranteed number 1 clause as I can't understand how he's never been dropped.
He was literally dropped by Solskjaer.

It basically is though? Bonuses paid on certain stipulations such as appearances made.

I’m not sure what our other options are? Whilst a need it isn’t our biggest need and we only have limited funds to spend without selling.
Sell then, get some money for Henderson and save on wages from DDG. Reinvest that in a keeper

Nah, he’s taking a 50% cut to 175k per week so it’s all good, guys got kids to feed.
Crazy thing is he will still be one of the best paid keepers in the world. Pretty sure he'd still the best paid keeper in the league. To give him £175k a week to be our no.2 would be bizarre.

We are likely selling Henderson anyway this summer and we should save plenty on DDG wages with his new contract. Even with that we need that money spending elsewhere such as a striker (notoriously not cheap) and midfield enhancements before we spend on a new GK. if we sign a GK this summer I wouldn’t expect we go big in terms of price tag.

And it would also have the knock-on effect of causing any prospective number 1 keeper to demand an even higher salary from us. There's no way our future number 1 will be making less than our number 2.

Who are we signing who could realistically be a #1 for Manchester United then? No one on the tip of my tongue that I could be so confident in them to not have a backup of DDG or Henderson level.

If we're skimping on fee I would try Raya for a season.

I see that as the level of signing that is possible, but we’ll have competition I’m sure. Even then though I’d not like him without a DDG level keeper to compete with.

Why? Hes better than DDG (according to Spain national team too by the way)
Why pay DDG wages which still would make him one of the highest paid keepers in the world to be backup? Just sign a backup keeper like we have been doing over the years

Because being a goalkeeper for Manchester United isn’t the same as being the goalkeeper for Brentford. The levels of pressure and scrutiny aren’t really comparable. DDG has shown he can perform on that stage before where a bargain basement backup signing may not should that pressure and scrutiny get to Raya.

De Gea has constantly fluffed his lines under the spotlight , infact he has been quite lucky that United have been in utter shambles during his stay here otherwise his weak mentality and inability to deal with pressure would have come under greater scrutiny.

He’s had gaffes for sure, that you can’t deny. If he hadn’t I wouldn’t be saying I’d like him as a backup to Raya who is by no means the level we should be aspiring for either. He’s still of a level though that he could win games with his positive traits and push Raya or even prove himself the better keeper over the course of a season. Not that I’d bet on that, but certainly not beyond the realms of possibility.

This just takes me back to my initial point though that we have bigger priorities to spend our money on compared to GK, so re-signing DDG for the next season or so isn’t the end of the world If we can’t get the funds to bring in a top tier player.

Make Henderson no 1 until we can get Costa
Henderson is a worse goalkeeper than De Gea and the stats show that. People are going overboard on how bad they think De Gea is. He can be improved on but not by just any crap keeper.

If we're going cheap you'd expect Raya won't cost much with just 1 year left on his contract. Andre Onana would be my choice considering I've heard he's available for around €40m but either would be decent options. How Raya handles the step up in pressure is the only question I have with him but I do like him a lot.
