Manchester United are interested in Anderlecht goalkeeper Bart Verbruggen amid uncertainty over David de Gea's No.1 status beyond this season. Verbruggen, 20, was given his Anderlecht debut at the age of 18 by Vincent Kompany two years ago and has played 31 times for the Belgian club.

Although De Gea is expected to sign a new contract with United, figures at the club are planning to phase him out and he is not assured of his first-choice role next term.

Hope this is true. Best case scenario, if de Gea stays and we don't have the money for Costa.

Honestly would be the best one for us to buy if De Gea is getting a new contract. Great shot stopper and great and commanding his box, claims crosses really well. Much better at distribution than Dave. Only 20 too... could be ETH's keeper for the long term

No bloody way De Gea isn't going to remain number 1

Highly rated and very talented apparently. Can't say I've seen all that much of him. I mainly like this because of his age and what I've read about him. By all accounts he's having a very good first season as Anderlecht's #1. It would also be a good indication that our recruitment department might be improved. Basically signing a promising player before he becomes very expensive.
How's he's sweeping skills ? ball controlling ? long balls ?

He's Dutch so that will lead to bitching and moaning in the ETH topic for sure.

Having a young goalkeeper with the right attributes to develop into the modern player we need with De Gea (on massively reduced wages) on the bench to come in if the lad shits the bed seems a pretty ideal scenario, assuming there's nothing in the budget for someone of the level of Maignan.

Would be nice to not be completely Verbuggered if the pressure gets to the kid.

Yo! Hey, what's happening, cnuts?
I'm the guy who will pass instead of punt.
Substitute De Gea whenever he fails,
Send him to the golf course, like Gareth Bale.

Fixin' test scores to get the best scores.
Droppin' crossed balls all over the floor.
I'm the guy that's name rhymes with fart,
Last name Verbruggen, first name Bart.

I heard about him around 5 minutes ago, but I am sure he is the answer and I want him desperately.

In all seriousness, this kind of signing probably makes some sense.

Been reading all season that Bayern are eyeing him up for the Neuer replacement.

Seems a huge talent.

Probably one for the future but he isn't shit, which is promising.

Worth checking out some match highlights if anyone else is interested.

Liverpool are apparently interested too. He did quite a nice "Stevie" to be fair.

Thoughts of a Anderlecht fan below regarding the potential of Verbruggen from a few months back.

"Everything mentioned above are just vague statements highlighting how perfect Bart Verbruggen is, but we are going to step a bit deeper into him and what he brings to the table. Lifelong Anderlecht fan Ket or who many of you may know as @rscafrns on Twitter to let Burnley fans know more about Verbruggen and what to expect of him, if he were to sign at Turf Moor."

"Welcome, first of all can you tell us a little bit about yourself and where does the love for Anderlecht come from?"

Anderlecht fan "My dad has loved Anderlecht since the 80’s and made me watch Anderlecht games and even documentaries since I was a child, when I was nine, he took me to my first Anderlecht game in the Champions League, since then i’m a passionate fan of Anderlecht."

"So, Lets get into it. How has Bart Verbruggen acclimated to life as first choice and what’s the season been like for him?"

Anderlecht fan: "He already had some experience as a starter as he played 6 games in the play offs in the 20-21 season, also him being the first choice for our B team in second division helped him get the needed experience."

"What sort of personality does he possess in-between that frame? Is he more of a calm guy who quietly does his job or someone who is loves to get involved in everything.. like say Emi Martinez or Aaron Ramsdale?"

Anderlecht fan: "He’s a very calm guy, handles pressure very well, especially at his age. He will quietly do his job but he’s not scared of taking a risk to get the attention."

"How will you describe Bart Verbruggen as a keeper? Is he more of a sweeper-keeper?"

Anderlecht fan: "goalkeeper at his age, adapts to every situation without any problems and he will be very comfortable by going to that halfway line."

He looks like a strong figure, what’s he like in duels and general commanding of his area?

Anderlecht fan: "He's a great leader in his area, he will even command 35-year-old Jan Vertonghen to do what he needs to do, losing duels is a no-go for him."

"Can you breakdown some of his skills & strengths, to help us understand Bart more?"

Anderlecht fan: "footballing ability is very great, some say that high balls are his weakness but he improved alot on that to even make it his strength. Very calm goalkeeper which I personally think is important to give your defenders even more confidence, his reflexes are also out of this world."

"How is he on the technical side of things? What’s his ball-playing ability like?"

Anderlecht fan: "ball playing ability is good but there is some work to do on his goal kicks, goes wrong sometimes and thats dangerous but normal passes, even with top strikers pressuring him, are no problem for Bart."

"So, does he like to keep it safe more so than looking for risks when playing the ball out?"

Anderlecht fan: "It depends, sometimes he waits until the last second, sometimes he just plays it wide. He more often looks for risks to impress everyone, and it always works."

And, what according to you are things where he needs to improve at?

"Goalkicks, as I mentioned before they sometimes end up in the feet of the opponents midfield, it will definitely improve by time."

I didn't even know he was Dutch until @Rapsel's post above. Will be nice to have a good keeper again after quite a long period of averageness.

If we are renewing de Gea, which looks likely, then it does make sense to bring in a wonderkid keeper to develop.

We hired a gk scout/analyst a while ago. Verbruggen is Dutch, but that is not why he is on the radar.

I’d rather get him than pay 60mill for Diogo Costa.

Sometimes I think that jurnos just go to FB ref, go the GK tab and pick sort by PSxG -xGA and pick the highest one. Not long ago we were linked with a Serbian GK from the MLS who was in the 99 percentile for the same metric, and now this guy who is... you guessed it, in the 99 percentile for the exact same metric.

All joking aside, he has an amazing FB ref profile: https://fbref.com/en/players/cf134113/scout/365_m2/Bart-Verbruggen-Scouting-Report

From what I see, he has amazing shot stopping reflexes(85% in Europe, in the league it's a bit lower at around 75%. By comparison De Gea in his best season managed 82%) is very good at claiming crosses(as good as Raya), and his PSxG - xGA is +0.55 per match(again De Gea in his best season average +0.22). Over the course of 40 games that averages to around 22 goals.(for those of you who are confused by the metric, it stands for how many goals does he concede in comparison to an average GK. In this situation, an average GK conceded 22 more goals by the shots/crosses faced)

As far as weaknesses go, I see that he is lacking in his distribution, specifically with his feet where he ranks very similar to DDG. He does like to do long throws though. Also he hasn't saved a penalty this season. Not that that's a bad trait, but it is a very good asset to have as a GK.

I read above that he is comparable to Neuer. I disagree. Neuer is good in possession and not that good at claiming crosses( this season he averaged 2.9% while De Gea is at 3.3% for example) If anything, this lad is a Peter Schmeichel regen, good reflexes, very proactive, good cross claiming, but not necessarily good with his feet.

The good news is that he is young and can be coached to be better. I really hope that we sign him. He looks very promissing. And even with Dave staying, I can see him displacing DDG before the end of next season.
