If Dave isn't kicking the ball to the opposition every time he touches the ball or not coming out for the ball, maybe this wouldn't be needed in the first place.
Let's also not forget that while he's still able to make an excellent stop every now and then, these days he's just as likely to let in goals he should be saving. We'd have gotten further in the Europa if it wasn't for him.

In some parts of his game, he's very similar to De Gea. In others wildly different. The parrying shots right into danger, and punching instead of catching are two things we're very used to.
I was really hoping our next keeper could be more proficient in this

That's the thing isn't, DDG is taking a kicking for his kicking, and so it's easy to forget the things he does very well. He almost always punches the ball away to safety.

Look, his passing is not up to scratch for a big team attempting to play modern football, he doesn't dominate his box either, I get that, and he does need to be changed, I suppose I'm saying we shouldn't be surprised if a new keeper arrives and has some glaring weaknesses which we've always taken for granted
I am all for a goalkeeper that excels in the passing game but they have to fundamentally be a very good GK as well and it looks like this guy struggles with the basics.

Going by the video he seems weak in his handling/catching and his saves seem to have a tendency to generally go back in dangerous areas.
Watched the video and he does tend to palm it away but always seems aware of his surroundings and generally knocks it to a team mate or into space/out of play. There’s only one or two saves where it goes to an opposition player. It’s almost like it’s a deliberate strategy, weird though

I dont think he struggles with the basics. Hes not world class but he looks a good enough shot stopper.

I watched quite a bit of footage of him in the past few days and ,although I agree that his handling of the ball is his biggest weakness, the tendency to push the ball away is quite prominent in many other keepers as well. Go watch Costa or Maignan, keepers who are very highly rated on the CAF, and you will notice a similar trait.

I do not see many in the Premier League that do it.

All I can say is I can hardly remember an opponent scoring in the rebound in his Ajax days. When he punches away he has the situational awareness where to punch it to.

As with any other compilation of a football player, they can't determine whether a player is good enough or not. How that is even used as an argument is beyond me.
Maybe not for an outfield player but for a GK the evidence stands up and my description of calling him a boomerang is because everything comes back (some may need it explained to them) and maybe strikers are slow to react in the geriatric league but in England he will be severely punished.

Benzema, Vinicius, Lewandowski, Ribery etc weren't able to beat him with a tap in either.

He did excellent against City who happened to win the treble. Looking forward to seeing Danny Ings and Dominic Solanke severely punish him

I've haven't watched a single game of his.
Those twitter clips a few pages back doing his best Barthez impression reminds me of when its my turn to go in goal in park games. Rush Keeper energy.

I think his saves and reboundcontrol is pretty similar to de gea.
Those clips showed a lot of bravery coming out for crosses though, and even when he did miss the catch he still disrupted the attacker enough that the chance was gone

From “World Class get him in!” To “He’s shite, not world class. This is going to be a disaster” in a matter of a few YouTube videos and us being strongly linked with him. Never change CAF, never change.

We could be linked with Buffon in his prime and some would still think he isn’t up to the job because he chose to punch a cross against Spezia in 1998.

He never parries into danger I'll give DDG that but his punching is weak, really weak.

Had always thought of him as a world class goalkeeper, but after hearing about that I'm not so sure.

He really, really doesn't. Onana is an excellent GK, on the line, in the air, in 1-v-1. What sets him apart is his playmaking.

Mind you, I base this on his Ajax performances pre-ban. How he performs at Inter, I have no idea. Didn't watch his video's on YT either, so cannot comment on that as well.

Let's be honest though you've spent more time watching compilations of Onana than any games of other keepers purely because he's linked to us.
I am honest when I say I have only watched the first two minutes of the video that I posted and the basic error of punching the ball straight back to the six yard box was enough for me to form an opinion.
I did not watch the Chmps league final.
I also read that he was banned while he was at Ajax for drug taking and that is all I know about the bloke.

Well if that's not enough to form a conclusive opinion then I don't know what is.

So watching him on YouTube for two minutes, you concluded he's not good enough for us. Alright then!

The idea is maybe if we can play from the back then we might not have to face more shots than ever before, so world class shot stopping is secondary with ETH.

I love DDG, but I fully support this signing.

You watch it then and tell me if it is good goal keeping to punch the ball straight back to the six yard box..they are basic errors so what is so hard to understand about that?

No one is saying that's a smart choice. But you can find videos on YouTube of every single world class keeper making mistakes like that, and other mistakes as well. Keepers aren't faultless.
