Manchester Utd never lose, just run out of time
Because De Gea won the golden glove, that stat is now a team stat, rather than an individual one.

Can't be seen to give praise to our players now.
Joe Hart won four, Reina won three, Cech won three long after his head injury, Ederson has won two despite being fairly average in terms of making saves. Of course it's a stat that is heavily influenced by the team as a whole.

It's a nice thing to get, but when directly comparing two keepers it's a long way down the list of things to look at.

Big big disagree with this. I think our creation is massively lacking. It's not the thread for it, but I'm surprised to see anyone happy with how our attacking players provide, it's nowhere near enough.
Last season we scored almost 14 goals under xg. Definitely scoring is the major problem, not creativity. But I don't disagree 100%. We need some creativity also. Not sure Mount and Onana would be enough.

I’m guessing he means the unpredictability
If you watch those highlights, most of the unpredictable stuff comes from his younger days. Some seem even to be when he was at the Ajax Academy. A lot of it is also him being composed in the penalty area and giving himself better options for passing. Alisson, Ederson and a few other ball-playing keepers always do those kinds of moves.

Oh yeah I get it, but for many it’s also gonna be heart attack inducing to watch

Obviously it's a team stat as keeping clean sheets relies heavily on the defensive unit of the team

The little I have seen from him does not convince that it is a good idea to let de Gea go for free and pay 50 Mio for him.
With the fee for Mount this means over 100 Mio and it does not feel as if this improves us significantly.

Our biggest issue was creating chances and scoring and I cannot see how these 2 solve that problem.
We just bought a quite creative midfielder in Mount and surely will buy a striker anyway. So there's an attempt to address those two issues. I really think Mount alone will help a lot with his clever runs in the channels, his good technical and shooting skills.

It's funny how different fans judge our needs. I always thought we'd need a modern GK, a third starting midfielder with good technique, engine and ability to progress the ball to complement Bruno and Casemiro and of course a striker. Everything else I'd see as a bonus (maybe an understudy to Casemiro would be quite important too, as we don't have any remotely adequate cover). It looks like we manage to solve two of the three problematic areas very early in the window.

Will take a while to get used to a keeper coming off his line for set pieces and claiming crosses. Think that will confuse a lot of United fans who have been brought up on Dave's unique brand of goalkeeping.
Tbf DDG's goalkeeping isn't unique -- it's just antiquated.

From a Fergie/previous era. Dave would have been one of the best then if football didn't evolve. Just like Barthez would have been appreciated if he was playing for United now. If they had a freaky friday moment...

Sounds like the Italian media are trying to get a deal done for Inter. No negotiations but all they keep talking about is price price price.

I think we know how are club operates. If the English press hasn’t mentioned it we haven’t negotiated yet.

I disagree, you didn't see Big Pete and VDS glued to their line... Schmeichel was very good coming off his line and sweeping up when needed.

This DDG is old school is an excuse for him, he would have been worse back then imo, imagine the likes of Vinnie Jones crashing into him.

I feel that Costa looks like he has the passing game but he is a better keeper and has composure whereas I get Eric Bailly vibes from Onana.
That’s a bit harsh based on one video. We’ve seen him play high profile games where he hasn’t made any mistakes, as long as he has a passing options he’s not going to dwell on the ball and there will be the odd time where he gets caught out but he’ll learn from it.

Any keeper that plays outside his own box often will occasionally get caught out but Onana has a track record of doing it a lot and not making that many mistakes. There’s no evidence to suggest Costa would be better than him either.

From what I was able to ascertain from the 240p quality, half of these aren’t even mistakes, and most of these clips are from the Eredivisie where he (and the rest of the team) could afford to piss about against the Go Ahead Eagles of the world. You only have to look at how he’s doing for Inter to see he’s a pretty good goalkeeper who massively adorns the style of football our manager wants to play.

I’m not convinced this is the guy we should be replacing DDG with if I’m honest.

Based on?

Ten Hag seems to think he’s worth it, Pep seems to think he’s one of the best in the world, but you’ve got some reservations I guess?
Hmm. We said this about other players to you and you didn’t give a shit.

Like who?

I’ve been impressed Onana since I watched him play for Ajax when Ten Hag was there in the CL but saying “I think he’s good enough” doesn’t really have the same gravitas as Pep and Ten Hag sharing that opinion so I went with them.

De Gea would have been physically destroyed during most of Fergie's era. Opposition teams would have been bullying him all game long, and his weakness to crosses would have been targeted even more. And it's not like sweeping is a new development - Schmeichel and VDS, despite playing in those eras where it wasn't as big a deal, still acted as a sweeper more often than De Gea does.

De Gea has numerous weaknesses. If he came along much earlier than he did, some of those weaknesses would have been a much bigger deal. If he came along later than he did, some of the other weaknesses would have been a big deal-breaker. Luckily for him there was a decade or so between those two periods where some weaknesses couldn't be targeted as much and where others weren't as big a deal yet, and he came along during that period.

I do wonder if Ten Hag planned to replace De Gea all along?
I think the answer was definitely yes, but like with Ronaldo (or at least the attempt to), it would have been gradually. I think he would have been happy with De Gea sticking around as a no.2 for a year or so playing fewer minutes but sticking around as one of the senior figures in the squad.

Pep and Ten Hag rating players that you don’t rate is what I mean.

Pep was speaking very highly of Harry before we bought him but no one here seems to recognise that.

I’m sure I read reports that inter wanted 40m earlier on. It’s like the Rasmus Hojlund deal, it jumps up 10m every day.

You got him for free a year ago! If they were buying one of our players they’d open the bidding at a ‘2 year loan with option to maybe think about bidding 5m’. Tight cnuts.

Composure? Looked a nervous wreck in the 5-10 big games I’ve seen him in.

Onana will for sure make mistakes that will get laughed at. Ederson and Alisson have pulled some stunts that make them look like fecking clowns but they make up for it elsewhere. DDG makes mistakes but for him they’re a bit of regular occurrence these days and his mistakes are different to the Brazilian keepers mentioned.

The Brazilian duo make mistakes on being overeager or arrogant. DDG makes mistakes on being hesitant or cautious.

True about coming off their lines to collect crosses. But they dont really leave the pen box as much as Onana or Barthez for sure.

Mistakes will happen as many have mentioned, but the most important part is whether he has the confidence and mentality to ignore the increased media coverage playing for one of the most high profile clubs in the world, particularly coming to a season where he is replacing De Gea who has won golden glove and I have no doubt our UK journalists will be on his back as soon as he makes a mistake and we won’t stop hearing about it.

You could easily say the same for the top goalscorer,
Very similar awards.

Don't agree with this at all. We have decent forwards but a large problem is our build up and how we constantly get countered from his distribution. Onana will help immeasurably with that. Hard to settle possession when your keeper keeps giving the ball to the opposition at every kick out/clearance. Reckon Onana will have a few clangers with his relatively risky approach but he'll be a net positive with his ball retention, proactivity when sweeping and at set pieces coming for crosses etc. One reason I'd have loved Diogo Costa was how bloody good he is at penos which would be great for cups and Europe in particular where Dave has been a total failure. Not sure what Onana's record is like but he just can't be as bad as De Gea in high stake penalty situations.
