What  “go out there lads and get all those mistakes out your system, stink the place out!”

They’re fitness matches, and money makers.
‘Go out there and make as many mistakes as you want’ so we can go into the season with low confidence

Look as a GK myself that has had some training in that department the first thing I can say is that some of DDGs saves during the years have been comparable to the Matrix and I can never stress enough how much I would have enjoyed watching him as a neutral. But Im not. I support United and his footwork and areal presence was never that good and made me nervous. Ona na is clearly better in both of this categories and as far as the goal goes its 50/50 between him and Dalot it wasnt completley his fault
How can it be the keepers fault?

If as a keeper you’re told to take up that position, and everyone knows you’re taking up that position, then your team mate does that, how are you at fault?

What if Shaw had made a forward run for a pass and Dalot did that, is Shaw at fault too? He’s caught out of position also, maybe he could have stopped the goal.

Getting caught out of position happens often when someone does something fecking stupid.

I saw a tweet the other day by someone in their 30s who said that for a third of their life, Dave was our keeper. As a 28 year old, he's been our GK for about 40 percent of my life?

Anyone who has spent that many years at our club commands my respect. Him being a spaniard, and coming to our club at 21 years old must have been a massive culture shock, which makes his tenure at the club more impressive. Over the past few years, his interviews have shown me how much he loves the club. It's not even surprising given how long he was with us. He genuinely looked baffled and embarrassed at times. Neville, Scholes, Rooney, Charlton, Beckham, Edwards, Keane, Rio, Giggs, Best, and im sorry if ive missed out a few legends, all love the club but De Gea is abit unique in that he is spanish and grew up supporting Atletico and had no prior connection to England or the league and was ridiculed at first by many.

I'm not going to say he is the best keeper ever. He pulled us out the shit plenty of times and also had a fair share of absolute blunders but he's a club legend. Big Pete is regarded as Uniteds greatest GK but he actually joined City. He was living in Bramhall and his son Kasper was playing for City but he seems to get a free pass for this which has always baffled me.

Anyway, if you can't share a farewell message to our 10th highest appearance maker of all time, I genuinely don't understand how you can consider yourself a United fan. I'd let you off if his personal life was as questionable as Giggs is.
Free pass for what, joining City? That seemingly suggests you can't/shouldn't be a United legend if you later join City, if that's the case then the statue of Dennis Law outside OT needs to be torn down! :nono:

Unfortunately some fans who felt DDG was unfairly maligned and vociferously defended him for a long time him have now flipped to criticising his replacement in order for to try and prove themselves right about De Gea in the first place.
There's a good chance it's done ironically to highlight how ridiculous some were with De Gea.

Understandable really when some portrayed De Gea as the cause of all our problems (and I'm barely exaggerating) so you will get a few cheeky remarks from time to time.

That's the CAF in a nutshell, from the extreme to the ludicrous and back with everything in between along the way

Come on. Law played for City before and after playing for us. It's a bit different pal.

Likewise, Busby had a prior connection to City.

I have no issue with that. Joining them after solely being a legend for us is what I do.

No, training manages that. Games are to get minutes in their legs. Ten Hag would have placed zero concern on how the second best team in France plays, their strengths or their weaknesses.
It’s to build their fitness levels up. As Ten Hag said all season, training allows him to transmit his ideas to the players. He couldnt do that as the season went on because the games built up.
No, it's absolutely not purely to build fitness and just because you say it with some kind of mystical, all-knowing authority doesn't make it true. They certainly are mostly to get players up to speed fitness-wise but they're also used to try out new things in semi-competitive environments with nothing at stake, working on getting new players integrated etc.

I wish they were all ironic. Some people are just that worked up.

friendly matches don’t have the intensity of real matches. Nobody is at full tilt when they’ve only played 2 games worth of minutes in 2 months. It’s the training that matters, if matches really mattered then the first team would be playing together a lot more than they do.
City don’t even play that many and that’s under a Pep team. He doesn’t see much value in them and instead plays them into match fitness as the season begins
They’ve played two pre season games in total.

it’s multi faceted, it’s not just about getting minutes in the legs (which is one aspect). In the same way there’s no replacing match fitness, there’s also no replacing real game like examples of working on actual game play, patterns and positions.

Absolutely disagree that friendlies are purely and solely for fitness purposes!

So if they're purely for fitness, why aren't players just running fitness drills instead, or playing each other in eleven aside training games?

They're primarily for fitness and money making but, as I said, they're also for slowly reintroducing competitive football, getting players used to playing together in environments that aren't simply training matches, and trying new things in low stakes simulation situations.

50/50? Nothing wrong with Onana's positioning there, maybe he could have been more to the right and looking for a ball back.

I'd put all the blame on Dalot, absolutely shocking pass, put the opposition player through on goal with the keeper on his 18 yard line. Only one outcome really, Onana should have tore him a new one.

if Shaw makes a forward run and gets caught out then he’s partially to blame, it’s a team game. Anticipating is a big part of the game.

Getting caught out of position can be through someone doing something fecking stupid, yes you’re right, it can also be because someone has fecking misjudged the situation and so they’re also at fault, it’s never as clean cut as you’re suggesting.

How can you anticipate your team mate being a dickhead?

Im not saying they’re useless, im saying they’re primarily used to get minutes in players legs.
Is there a sliding scale of importance? I think we’ve played 5 games and it’s stupid to the extreme to even pretend the first 2/3 matters since players are literally just back into training. Then we’re playing teams with differing levels of fitness themselves since not all teams are back at the same time and have later or earlier starts to their league campaigns.
If pre season matches was so important then wouldn’t you say first 11 should be playing together a lot more than they do? Isn’t the proof in the pudding?

Making an unforced error on a 5 yard pass is dickhead behaviour. If you pulled a pin on a grenade and dropped it in our trench I’d call you a dickhead too.
Dalot made an error in a friendly, I wonder if Onana thinks he’s a dickhead? Unlikely. Given how unimportant the game was, probably thinks it was unfortunate rather than dickhead behaviour and they’ll stick together and aim to avoid such mistakes in future.

Quite a sweeping statement to call a poor pass dickhead behaviour, bit weird.

Possibly talking at cross purposes.

I don’t think anyone is saying that pre season friendlies are important, it’s more what the purpose is and it’s far broader than just getting minutes in the legs of the players. As you rightly say, friendlies are less intense so don’t truly get players match fit anyway so it has to be about more than minutes playing.

Why are you acting like this will make or break team morale? The one thing Ten Hag has brought to United is accountability, and Dalot is accountable for that error and will have been told so. The same way Onana let Maguire know he was accountable against Dortmund the other week.

You're a tad strange

Onana and Dalot both made a mistake, not sure why you can't just admit that!

I’m not the one who keeps bringing up a keeper that no longer plays for us whenever our current keeper does something that’s different from what you’ve seen over the last 10 years.

I don’t like how you’re saying a poor pass is dickhead behaviour by a player, it’s no more complicated than that. I very much doubt EtH has the same opinion and would conflate accountability with being a dickhead.

Why is a goalkeeper taking up a position the manager would want him to be in a “mistake”? We had possession and were under no pressure whatsoever.

The man hymself wasnt too happy in his post match interview which means he holds hymself accountable and that is good enough for me.

Look if he was closer to his goal that would not have happened. It was all a combination I guess from Dalot's dreadful pass to Lens's player sublime finish to bad positioning and Onana was man enough to acknowledge that after the game. He doesnt need instant fan boys defending him

A surprisingly small amout of this four page David De Gea appreciation thread has actually involved appreciating David De Gea versus just criticising De Gea and/or Onana.

Ye need to learn how to actually have nice threads.

How do we know the manager asked him to be out of his box, considering a few minutes earlier we were in a similar situation and he was IN his box and he dealt with it superbly.

I don't understand why people can't just admit that he was out of position?!
Dalot made and error, but also so did Onana.

There's some oddly terse conversation going on in here . We all know when goalkeepers play a 'riskier' style (coming off their line more often, sweeping etc.) you can get these types of goals. I trust that Onana is playing in a way that pleases the manager who's just bought him and I hold Dalot much more responsible for the goal due to the poor turnover of possession.

You said they're literally only for fitness, I said they're not. See below

Friendlies are for fitness, that’s literally all they’re for.
I don't think they're very important but I do think they're more than just for fitness.
