Of course his first two years were good. He was a starter for a team which reached 3rd and 2nd place in the league and several semi finals plus 1 final. By qualifying for the CL we also got much needed money (even more important during those covid years when match day income was missing).
Now the Caf has to find a new scapegoat. Antony, Sancho, Lindelöf and possibly Mount should run away from OT as fast as they can.

Maguire £30M
Elanga £15m
Telles £4m
Chong £1m

Still need to raise up money from some more sales, wonder how much we can raise between Fred, VDB and potentially McTominay. We should really get rid of Brandon Williams too, no idea why he is still here.

If he can get back to his best then West Ham have got a very good deal.Atm His confidence is completely shot which has added to his poor performances but I'll never understand booing one of your own players.

He doesn't fit how ETH wants to play so this deal suits everyone.Like most on here I'm glad he's gone though.

This is a fantastic move for United, Maguire and West Ham.

Maguire brings so much experience to that West Ham team. The way West Ham play he fits them perfectly. I really think he will transform their defence.

Yes, he'll play much better there. Not only does he fit their system better, the media pressure is much less down there.

Great day for us too. I wish him well, he was just a poor fit for us

Gotta love calling a player that was absolute tripe for multiple years a “scapegoat”

We bought him for 80m and sold him for 30m only. Got stripped from the armband along the way.

Absolute fecking disaster of a deal that was from the start. Easily one of our worst transfers ever, maybe even the worst.

I'd say

VDB - £5m
Fred - £20/25m
McTominay - £40m

Yes, he was a scapegoat despite playing well :wenger:

Good fecking riddance.

50 million likely from those 3 + Henderson and Williams. There should be enough money to get another midfielder and CB.

Nowhere near the worst. He had 2 good seasons and 2 poor ones. 50% hit rate. Sanchez was absolutely terrible in practically every game. Factor in his 400k pw wages (double Maguires?) and he was far worse. Di Maria was pathetic. Pogba? Lost the full £89m on that one and he didn't exactly cover himself in glory.

He was far less corrosive an influence than the likes of Pogba though.
As corrosive as we perceive Pogba to have been he did more in his 1st year than Maguire did was really my point. Neither are transfers to write home about but I remember when Harry got the captaincy that ‘my captain’ nonsense when he’d never shown any leadership before, during or since.

At its conception a record transfer for Pogba at that time is understandable, it just went as badly as it could. Maguire however was never a good piece of business.

On the pitch his non-existent leadership & in a number of cases, shambolic displays were as corrosive as anything we’ve seen post Fergie for me.

Not even close, Pogba was very good at times here. Only non Liverpool/City player to make PFA team of the year in 19.

to his detriment his heroics kept Mourinho in the job for longer than he should have, was our best player in the record breaking run that got Ole the job. It didn't pan out how most wanted overall but he's far from our worst signing

Not sure it was that terrible with 2nd and 3rd place finishes in there?
It wasn't great though was it? Terrible sounds a bit entitled but, thinking about it, I don't hark back to bygone seasons and think 'that was a good season because we finished 2nd or 3rd or 5th', I remember how we played and the enjoyment of the year and that stretch from Mou through to Ragnick leaving is by far my least favourite time as a United supporter. There was so much off the field distraction, bad signings, terrible managerial appointments and for my money we played such negative, basic football for the most part.

Maguire isn't to blame for costing so much money or being signed to play a style of football that a teenager can see he's not built for, but it happened and he'll have the scapegoat reputation for the rest of his days sadly. As said, wish him well but hopefully he does leave.

He definitely wasn’t. Some fans just have it out for certain players.

Good player in his day. Very underrated at his peak due to his clumsiness/ungainliness but think he eventually lost confidence and dropped to the level people claimed he was and lost his way. Should never have been made captain but fans were disgraceful with him - the booing was disgusting given he always had a good attitude. The move is best for everyone. Am convinced, he will be Maldini-esque in every game we play him as per but hope it works out for him in every other game.

Because it's a discussion forum and I disagree that he was good and want to voice so

I'm happy he's going - even wished him good luck - do I have to lie about how I feel about him as a signing and performances because he's a good pro?
No. Fair enough.

65000 reasons why he is here and no one will buy him.

I hope we raise 50m+ from Fred, VDB and McTominay.

How many years are on his contract? We’ll basically be paying him £4m per year to cover the loss in wages

McTominay has (limited, but) squad utility. Others don’t
Fred was better than McTominay last season to be fair. And I think played more, but did not check the minutes (just my guess by watching us play).

I think we should get rid of all of them, sign Amrabat, fully promote Mainoo. Essentially 3 out (Fred, McTominay, VDB) and 3 in (Mount, Amrabat and Mainoo).

It's perhaps a matter for another thread, but how do we judge a signing? It's all a bit subjective.

Pogba was the most expensive signing in the history of this league when we signed him. And he still is the most expensive signing this club has ever made even after 7 years (Antony was £85m and Pogba £89m) without even accounting for inflation. And then he left at his supposed peak at 29 for nothing. He can't be judged by the same standard as Dan James for example, who was bought for pittance and sold for profit, can he?

Was Pogba a bad footballer? No. Did he get even remotely close to achieving what we hoped for given the cost and his ability? Also No. That's a pretty bad signing.

He did show plenty of leadership in those first couple of years when his form was good and we played in a style that suited him. None of that excuses his weakness or his too-frequent errors.

He is a very polarising character. Some cannot see any good. Some turn a blind eye to some of the bad. It turns into a worthless debate.

I realise he is not good enough but I don’t like the plethora of two-faced BS comments along the lines of “wish him all the best but he’s the shittest player ever born”. It’s tiresome.

Telles was 6m. And also there were several other transfers worth 0.7-1m each - Iqbal, Laird, Savage, Bishop…
Savage was a free transfer and I think the Bishop fee was nominal at best but Laird and Iqbal were in the range mentioned. We also got 75k from our sell on clause for Dylan Levitt so it blows my mind that we have not bid for Mbappe yet.
