Onana has not worked out. We need a new keeper.

I see we're whitewashing De Gea's errors this soon already.
Not just in terms of failing to make saves but just how bad his passing was. We constantly ended up having to defend dangerous situations because he would pass straight to the opposition.

Not saying De Gea was the best ever, but i havent seen anything other than a few hollywood passes from Onana either. So far he has been underwhelming , but so has the whole team. He has certainly not made us any better... Yet. I have a bad feeling about him, but lets give him a season

I agree with you as goalkeeper you don't need to be able to ping a ball 30 40 yards we spend more time passing it the wrong way down the pitch anyway , but honestly who whispered in ETH ear to spend £70mil on him ?? I would have give him some change at half time for a bus ride home , except the pen and the last goal the other 2 wore training shots get rid before the team falls apart
Stop making up numbers

I seem to remember Vidic and Evra having less than stellar starts too, good job we didn't bin them off.
It's pretty telling that Vidic and Evra 17 years ago are always the examples cited when this line gets trotted out. How many players in the intervening 17 years have started off looking like complete donkeys and then gone on to be amazing?

Love De Gea and always stuck up for him on here but I was content with us changing it up and getting Onana. It doesn't take a genius to see how different a GK they both are. I'm completely behind Onana moving forward.
Yeah the kneejerking comes too fast and furious at the caf at times. Replacing a long time GK for a club as big is this is daunting. Especially when expectations are sky high and you don't have the first choice D in front of you. I'll admit he hasn't come out of the gates as well as I thought he would, but at this point we should give til at least Dec to start showing signs of improvement and finish out the entire season as well before passing much judgement. We have much bigger fish to fry at the moment. We ve dropped too much cash on players not to be more patient. And yes that sucks.

DDG started his career like this...he will turn this around. The whole team is in a malaise and its spreading through the team. We need a spark and confidence win to get going. Onana was not this bad previously...weather the storm..stay strong.

Lies. DDG saves the first two, no problems. He concedes the pen cos he’s shite at them, and the one into the roof of the net by Tel is 50/50 if he reacts in time.
This is no longer a serious conversation.

Let’s be honest, this is is his first major error. Admittedly, he should be impressing us with at least a couple of great saves in this 6 game sample set but I’m happy to afford him time. Like I am to Ten Hag and the team overall. We haven’t been great, but had we had a bit more luck, our situation wouldn’t be as dire as it seems. Genuinely believe that with a favourable set of fixtures coming up, the team and especially Onana could settle in and start performing better.

It doesn't make it any less true though, the passing of time. You might also ask how many players have we signed that haven't been complete donkeys full stop. Even DDG started out with question marks over him, that didn't turn out so bad. That was 2011, so there's quite a relevant one.

It makes sense if the team is playing possession orientated but by way of the managers own admission that's not the outlook of the team. Maignan and the keeper at Dortmund there's no excuse as the market for a keeper is quite strong.

De Gea would be a more suitable comparison, given he replaced an all time great keeper in his position as Onana is currently trying to do.

De Gea was genuinely gash for that first season or so, but went on to be regarded as the best keeper in the world and our most important player for a few years.

Hes got time to get it right and is a baby in keeper terms.

I'm just here for Onana's wild ride. I'll forgive him the floppy wrists when he starts nutmegging strikers on the half-way line.

He's not a bad keeper and I expect him to come good, which will probably happen as the overall squad begin performing up to their potential. Until that happens, expect a bumpy ride with plenty of dropped points.

Onana has some real strengths that are visible for anyone to see, namely his short passing and composure on the ball. He is supposedly also very good at long range passing, but we haven't seen that yet at United.

His shot stopping is average at best. There are several goals already conceded that he could have saved. Comparing him to DDG at his worst is neither here nor there. Comparing him to his prime is what we should be looking at. DDG probably had to go, so rather look at what DDG gave us in his prime - that was one of the best shot stoppers in PL history and a multitude of points won. He would still make mistakes - as did Schmeichel, but you would expect him to save a fair few goals. Against Brighton, for instance, a prime DDG would save two out of three goals conceded.

I'm sure Onana needs to improve, but we either need to make use of his great passing and turn that into a game changer for us, or he needs to seriously improve his shot stopping.

I’ve seen Dave let plenty of shots squirm under him as well.
I’m not sure why Licha didn’t try to close down Gnabry. Even big Pete said it after the game. Definitely room for improvement on our defenders. Getting used to playing in front of him versus Dave.

Arsenal won 4-0 tonight with Raya in the Sticks. Clean sheet.
Onana did not keep a clean sheet and even poppadum wrists the first one into the net himself.

Yes because of course United keep a clean sheet against Bayern away with that team with Raya in nets…

His shot stopping needs to improve.

But don't let Onana's bad start fool you. De Gea had to go.

Yeah. DDG started his career like this. 15 years ago.

He's 5 years older than Onana.

Anyone realised that since he was chipped in preseason he has been reluctant coming off his line or out the box?

I didn't think we could downgrade on De Gea but United find new ways to surprise you.

Maybe I'm just old-fashioned, but I'd still feel much more comfortable prioritising a keeper with top reflexes, collection, command of area etc. and any ability to spray Hollywood balls around is an added bonus. Not the primary criteria for choosing a new keeper.

He does still feel like an upgrade on the De Gea of recent years though. But give me peak shot-stopping De Gea any day. I don't care how bad he was at passing.

Considering that he seems to be able to pass better than our midfielder, I guess the solution is to play him in midfield. In that case, we improve the midfield and also the defense by virtue of not having Onana there.

Being serious, I did not think that replacing De Gea was a must. I know that I am biased cause he was by far my favorite player in post SAF era, and I fully admit that he was average for the last few years. But Onana seems average as feck too and he cost 50m, which could have been used somewhere else (for example Mount + Onana gives you a Caicedo/Rice, or Hojlund + Onana gives you an Osimehn) for much more impact.

I think people who watched him in Serie A mentioned that he is not a good shot-stopper. I think his shot-stopping stats were very average in Serie A, albeit he did better in UCL.

Either way, we somehow spend 50m to make a problem even worse, which is what you typically expect of United.

United and Murphy's law, name a better duo!

It’s far too early to judge, De Gea was an absolute disgrace for about 6 months when he joined.. he hasn’t had a settled defence infront of him and his distribution has been good..

It was a bad mistake tonight, really bad. He deserves a bit of time, the backline is completely changed from opening games with injuries too. Hardly a settled team he came in to. Love to see David De Gea play with that backline tonight, passing it out from the back.

As United fans we know mostly the United examples. Eg Vidic, Evra, De Gea, etc.

But lots of examples: Lots at Liverpool since Klopp arrived. Fabinho, Allison… Possibly Gapko and Nunes are starting to improve this year after being heavily ridiculed last year. Also those players looked like crap transfer for more than 1-5 matches.

At city it’s less obvious because they rotate so much. But Rodri didn’t settle in immediately.

Every club has examples of players who take a few matches or even 6 months to a season to settle in. Zidane at RM was viewed as a waste after 6 months.

Two things can be true at once.

1. We needed to spend that money on a new keeper.

2. We should have signed a different keeper.

1. Was 100% obviously true by the end of last season (actually long before then).

It’s still too early to be sure that 2. is true.
Disagree. DDG wasn’t perfect, but he was perfectly serviceable while we addressed the bigger issues in the squad. Feels like we might have created another issue in GK, rather than solved one.

A clean sheet in the CL is a clean sheet in the CL. The worlds most elite club competition after all.
By that logic a clean sheet against Man City is the same as a clean sheet against Royal Antwerp. Amazing logic. :wenger:

DDG was worse than he has been for about 4 years. And yet people on here still believe that he should have been kept...

So after 5 or 6 games, we'll write Onana off.

Seems fair.

Yeah Onana has played 1% of De Gea’s total games for United but that’s enough to judge him as a failed signing apparently.

De Gea had a pretty poor start to his United career if i recall, letting in some easy goals.

Early days but i'd be lying if i said it was concerning. Again, it would be nice if he had a settled defence in front of him though, not every goal or even half of them have been on him.

The alternative to letting DDG go at the end of his contract was keeping him for 4 years at 200k/week. Those were the agreed terms. There is no scenario where we keep him for a year while we sort out other issues.

We have a decent backup, if a player has a bad game they should be dropped. Onana hasn't exactly played well in our other losses either. I realize that it's not all on him but I'm keen to see what Bayindir has to offer.
