It is with a heavy heart that I revert back to the conclusion that what we need is a clue. A clue of how to play methodical top level football.
Only once we do that can I even begin to entertain a conversation of which individual footballers we might need. As it stands, it is with a more than 90% confidence that I can say that whichever footballer we may sign, in whatever position, will look undoubtedly worse than they do now at their current clubs if they joined us. This has been the case for many a year, and we then criticise our recruitment and wonder how every other team signs effective players and we can’t, as if we were almost going out of our way to exclusively sign players who are not good enough. The reality is, many of these players would probably be plenty good enough elsewhere.
Give me a coach that can make average players ‘play well’ then I can then start listing players who can come in and make them play great. Until then, this conversation is pointless. Every good player will be less good the moment they join United. Last season, I thought we had finally gotten ourselves into a position where slightly better footballers would see us take the next step, but we’re back in the position where slightly better players might get us in a top 4 fight at the very best.
