Guys the place where Alligators regularly eat people and people on meth chew faces off is dull.

Not hugely tbh.

2023 is boring with influencers and the likes which this is leaning into and Miami as a city and Florida as a county is dull as feck. As others have said, if they don't change up the mechanics of the game then it'll just feel like the last decade rehashed. There's bound to be some political satire as well which I'm frankly tired of.

Vice City worked so well because it was basically Scarface and peak 80's vibes. I don't think going for modern day will work anywhere remotely as well. I know you could point to GTA V versus San Andreas being set in 1992 and say they still managed it but there's a lot more variety of geography and a lot more of LA is iconic to be recreated than Miami/Florida, which aside from the neon lights is a bit of a shithole (LA is a shithole too but it has so much film and tv show history tied into it). I know it's dependant on level design and NFS isn't exactly renowned for it but their Miami-aping city was boring as hell.

I know Rockstar usually always manage to pull it out of the bag but they've done a lot of harm with the way they've milked V and then the PS2 'remasters'. I didn't finish V and haven't played online for a long, long time because each new expansion was crap.

It's all gonna be on the strength of the story telling/jeopardy of the two protagonists.
Jesus Christ what is wrong with you?

Miami alone is a city of bright colours with a unique mix of American, Latin American and Carribean cultures.

This is also a good explanation of Florida's "uniqueness"

Would probably quit gaming if you found the atmosphere in the trailer to be dull.
Not at all. There are plenty of amazing games with incredible atmosphere.

I just don't like the current period we're living in and this is aping it.

Don't like Florida in the slightest. Miami is a shithole. Don't like the music that comes from there or the celebrity types that go there, don't aspire to be an influencer, fed up of rednecks after 8 years of American politics. It basically looks like Instagram/Florida man meme 2023 for me.

Tired of GTA after V being redone over and over and milked until it's dead.

I'm sure it'll be well made and I'm sure there'll be more to it but I feel like loads in here have just gone 'OMG GTA <3' without really considering it. Think back to why Vice City was so special, it wasn't because of the actual city. If you remove what made Vice City so special, what are you left with?

Florida being such a meme is now so overplayed that it is dull so a game of it will wear thin pretty quickly.

I'm looking at the trailer and seeing an amazing populated world with a ton of potential for interaction and parody. Rockstar is an excellent publisher that does satire better than pretty much any other in the games industry so I trust them that they'll do well. GTA V has been hashed to death but it doesn't take away from the fact that it was a stupendous game.

You just come across as incredibly dour. You don't like it, fine, but dull is a very weird adjective to describe Florida/Miami/this version of Vice City.

Yeah I don’t think this game is really for you.
Maybe they’ve enjoyed the previous games and are excited to see what R* can do with current gen consoles?

And some of the expansions for GTA Online have been fantastic - but then you don’t seem to enjoy these types of games anyway!

I don't know if remaking gta vice city is the optimal choice, in a way they've already perfected the 80s with 2 games.

They could have done London but I think GTA has become about parodying the American dream, could they even successfully pull of a parody of modern British society?

I think Rockstar's ethos is now GTA is for parodying modern society and their secondary titles such as Red Dead, La Noire etc will pay homage to other time periods.

In terms of periods covered in 3D there's

18th century - Red Dead Dead
Late 40s - LA Noire
80s - Vice City/VCS
Early 90s - San Andreas
Late 90s - LCS
Early 2000s - GTA 3
Late 2000s - GTA IV
2010s - GTA V
2020s - GTA VI

That just leaves the 50s, 60s and 70s not done in 3D, so maybe they'll release a non-gta game to cover one of these periods. Perhaps they could even do something set in or around the two worlds wars.
We'll be getting our 1970s set game from Rockstar soon as well. Sure, there hasn't been any news in a while but it can't be much longer until Agent is released...

Oh don't get me wrong, they'll manage to pull off technical feats better than anyone else to populate a sandbox city and yeah I agree they do satire better than anyone else, I just think the past decade has proven satire is dead and I'm fed up of it. Modern life is dour - that's why Vice City hits so nicely still cause it was a throwback to all the films, shows and movies you've loved growing up about the 80's, same with San Andreas and the early 90's.

Between Trump, social media and 'murica in general - what is there left to satirise or make fun? Florida in 2023 is peak satire in itself, there's nowhere to go with it. They were always going to make a modern era game again but they should've picked another time and gone for that.

I'm sure I'll end up playing a lot of GTA online with mates but it'll be more for the social aspect of it and we're all extremely bored of V. I'll buy the game and I'll play it but I don't think it'll have lasting power and then you've got to deal with them introduce shit like Oppressors to ruin online and milking it for another decade and a bit.

Forgive me for not just being all starry eyed just because.

Not sure why you would even bother playing it, given what you've said!

True but I still play the PS2 era games. Rose tinted glasses and all of course.

Rockstar has a lot of credit it needs to earn back after milking V for so long and then the Definitive Edition shitshows.

I'm finding the same with films and TV shows tbh. Imagine Stranger Things set in 2023, it would've been cancelled after the first season.

Some of the characters in that trailer look batshit crazy.

However if you compare them to some of the posters in this thread, they look completely normal.

GTA V has lasted 10 years. There is no doubt that a much bigger and better game will be able to last that too if they wanted to.

The world around us in the present day is dour, I can agree to that, but there are so many aspects of modern life that are absolutely not dour and given it's a game they can touch on all those aspects that are full of life and fun and play on it, which the trailer absolutely shows they are.

I mean, the bolded is just wrong given they are going with it and they've hit the nail on the head with it in the trailer for most people. There are only two or three in here who seem to be unhappy including yourself. There will be more things to satire in the next year or so before it's released. The world moves at an incredible pace now so there will be no shortage of things they can add to the game and I think we will see with this version that there is more content added to the single player mode aswell as the multiplayer.

Also sure they're playing on that social side of things but it's a bloody trailer as well. You'd be daft not expect completely different aspects of the game and focuses on different types of people in all the areas across the map.

I can't remember if it was you, or one of the others on here, but I remember doing a mission with them, and we started it and both ran to my car. But before they got in, then stopped, ran down the street, punched an old woman to the ground, then ran back to my car, got in and didn't say a word!

Was one of the most violent things I have seen in GTA in it's own way!!

Are they any more crazy than the stuff we're exposed to coming from America in real life? That's one of the biggest issues. I don't need an attempt at making their ridiculousness even more so because it can barely move the needle.

Even if there is nothing left to satirise it can still be a fun game.

I don't need bleeding edge biting comedy in my games.

I'm with you on a lot of that. The last time I watched a TV show at the time of airing (i.e same year) was when Charlie Sheen still did 2 1/2 men. I stopped going to the movies after being forced through one of the superhero movies ~10 years ago.

But GTA is different, I'll try Gta 10 even if 6 through 9 should suck (and if I get to be 120 years old).

But the best thing about vice city was it being set in the 80s.. Now it's a retirement home.
That Vice City.

I'm quite happy to reverse opinion on a game. For example I was super excited for Cyberpunk and it let me down massively on release because the intense and vibrant city we were promised was a lifeless mess...but then the new expansion has managed to capture what initial promises stated.

The early signs with this trailer are very promising. I find it bizarre that you and @matherto can look at the trailer and label it as dull or uninteresting as a location or game option.

Tbf I think the only reason GTA V has gone on for 10+ years before they next release is if I’m not mistaken it’s like the best selling piece of media, not just video game, of all time? So I imagine Rockstar have deliberately milked it for as much as they can for as long as they can.

Well if they manage to make it absolutely nothing like Florida in 2023 then you'd have a point but given they historically do make it like the era and location they want to then you know pretty much what you're getting don't you?

If you hate everything about Florida in 2023 then it's not gonna look great is it?

It’s entirely more cool and far more exciting than the latest fifa which is released every year and changes very little.
True. My point to that poster was more so we can also say that about any video game that I imagine he would play

It’s just a game bro  no one is expecting you to become an influencer or a Florida Man just off the back of it.

I know but when the trailer is a minutes worth of exactly that then it doesn't scream 'this won't be that as a game' to me.

As said, I want to be proven wrong. I want to enjoy it. I want to appreciate the technical achievements that they'll undoubtedly do and I'll definitely play it and probably online a lot with friends but the setting isn't appealing.

People don't have to agree with it, it's just an opinion. But then that's what forums are for, expressing your opinion.
