Good on her, she's put in some great performances over the last couple of years.

<middle aged man mode>Mind you, it looks like she didn't have time to get fully dressed.</middle aged man mode>

Congrats to Mary.

But who the hell comes up with these shortlists? They overlook so many sportspersons who have actually won something in a calendar year. Like Ronnie O'Sullivan or having the actual leading Jockey this calendar year rather than Detorri.

When I saw the shortlist I reckoned it was between Mary Earps and Stuart Broad. I think that's the difference between memorable moments watched by fans on Sky and memorable moments broadcast on the BBC.

Personality-wise Mary had a memorable year as well. People remember her dancing on the table during the press conference after the Euros final - so they already knew who she was. Her "no lipreader needed" feck off scream after saving a penalty in the WWC final added to the picture. Her campaign to get Nike to sell the England women's goalkeeper shirt added some extra spice.

Congrats to Mary, im suprised she won it to be honest as since she plays for Man Utd I was expecting loads of daft rival fans to vote against her en masse

I haven’t read the entire thread or know the history of the award, but how many times before has a Man Utd player been lauded BBC Sports Personality of the Year? That’s gotta be pretty rare, no?

This year Anette Sagen retires as a ski jumper. She has fought and clawed through old smug farts who enjoying their privileges has denied her - on grounds of protecting the weaker sex from themselves - jumping at all, jumping official runs, jumping normal ski jump arenas, jumping for championships, National, then European, then World, then Olympics, the ski flying. Now Ema Klinec holds the world record for women at 226 metres flying through the air on a pair of planks. Sagen never held a world record, but everyone in skijumping knows that withought fighters like her, that would have impossible. Not because of physical demands, but because it’s a fight against power mongers every inch of the way. Mary Earps is one of those who has had to have two outstanding carreers in order to have one. She has my fecking respect, contract or no contract.

Sports personality is 'woke bullshit', much better when a member of the Royal family wins the award for equestrian. Now that was truly an award for the people.

A pretty shite nomination list.

Probably should’ve been given to a City player. Maybe Foden?
I don't think anyone in this thread would be willing to admit they don't actually think Earps or KJT's efforts merit them winning it ahead of the men's efforts, much as they may respect the game or have watched the Women's WC and respected Earps performance, or KJT's performance (as I did) in breaking a couple of her personal bests in this year. I don't mind them getting there for this award though, its not much of an award really in terms of prestige and its hardly one of those ones that does the woke shit of putting an obviously superior male sporting effort ahead of a woman's one. Earps did fantastic in the Women's WC, was their shining light, and deserves it.

In 70 years it is rare even for a footballer to win the award. Okay, the past two have been won by Earps and Beth Mead, but before those there have only been five - Bobby Moore, Paul Gascoigne, Michael Owen, Beckham and Giggs. I'd say that United are very well represented there.

Ryan Giggs, Mary Earps and David Beckham. We could have statues of them outside the Stretford End.

With a miniature Michael Owen one?

From the shortlist I thought Earps deserved the award. She was always going to win it (1/8 odds compared to second placed Broad at 7/1)

Sports Personality - she has that. I think Andy Murray has won it three times with no personality whatsoever. Jeez, even Steve Davis won it once. I don't count jockeys or F1 drivers.

Seems an odd decision to me when England lost the final, United finished second and lost the FA cup final. I always feel that personal awards have to go hand in hand with team success.

But then Beckham won it for his FK against Greece. All that did was qualify England for the World Cup. And why on earth did Giggs win it in 2009?

Nigel Mansell and Nick Faldo weren't exactly renowned for their charisma either.

Her year has been absolutely phenomenal. This is the exact kind of sports person this club should be moving heaven & earth to keep.

Well done Mary.

Congratulations to her, not so sure what some people are mad at, but when people achieve there will always be the losers waiting in the wings trying to undermine them.
