I don't know much about the Indian keeper at all. Can anyone do a quick snapshot? Style of player? Highly rated?

This is a difficult pitch to bat on. We have bowled dross. India will cause chaos from ball one.
Yeah, and I don't think we batted badly in the first innings truth be told.

A batting performance dip + a deteriorating pitch could see England posting in the 150-180 mark quite easily.

Yep. If we come out with the game basically already lost 150 might be optimistic.

I don't remember tbh. That being said if it's 2-2 going to Dharamshala, England will be favorites.. I'm going to try and go to that game. The stadium and area is beautiful.
I can't see this bowling attack taking 20 wickets in any of the tests.

This will be the last time on this tour we see this bowling attack.

The other options in certain combos can be more potent. Not great, but better.

Pure keeper. He would average 30 odd batting if we gave him enough games. He’s not much of a batter. He gets benched away now for Rahul, and at home we play with him because of the spinning wickets.

As a keeper he’s quite good but not great. He played club cricket in Chennai with Ashwin for awhile - so he’s got experience keeping to one of them.

He will drop away once Rishabh pant is back. India don’t like his batting at all which is why there’s another keeper in the squad now.

He actually pulled up in the field last night and I'm wondering whether there is something slightly more to it.
Spotted it!

England confirm Jack Leach picked up a knee issue in the field last night and was unable to bowl at full capacity.

I wonder how Ashwin + Axar + Jadeja batting average compares to opposing teams at home..

Jadeja a class above the other two with the bat no? Would you class them all as genuine all-rounders at home?

Jadeja for sure is a top order batter equivalent for us

Just checked. 60 Jadeja, 43 Axar, 27 Ashwin.

130..

I imagine opposing teams average around 200

Hartleys figures on a pitch offering plenty of assistance for the spinners - jesus.

Indeed, hence India nearly unbeatable at home (maybe you are completely - not looked) with those three playing.

I agreed with you on the batting order being 'weaker' at the top than usual - but it's so stacked it barely matters on pitches that offer a bit with the ball.
Once Ashwin retires and Jadeja also focuses more on limited overs, India's dominance in home could very well end. As amazing as Kohli is for India. Ashwin and Jadeja are big reasons for their home dominance.

Can't help but feel this is going to be the pattern of the series.

A woefully underprepared (and not good enough anyway) England fall well short on first innings and the match slips away from them.

An innings victory more than a distinct possibility and I suspect it won't be the only one.

Conditions are a huge factor in cricket, a thousand times more than a United away match in say Istanbul for example and England (as well as most other nations) simply can't crack it in India.

Before axar and Kuldeep that would have been a possibility but with Kuldeep, axar and bumrah being around for a long while. I wouldn't count on india's demise post ashwin and jadeja just yet, people had the same concerns post bhajji and kumble and yet here we are.

You can prepare as best you can but ultimately there is a reason India haven’t lost a home series since 2012 and their bowlers are much better than Englands.

That's my point though, you can prepare as best you can... England haven't prepared at all.

Agreed winning a series (or even a match) in India is as big a challenge as there is in sport - but you've got to try and give yourself a chance.

A good English spinner is such a rarity and it's clear we don't have anyone at the moment who is capable of striking fear in to the opposition, but then with English conditions and pitches how are they ever going to prosper?

It's the way they prepare pitches but also the fact spinners are sidelined in favour of even medium pacers at County level.

Genuine question.. whatever the pitches are, you should be able to control length and line, why can’t the English spinners do that? Do they just not many overs in match?

There's a million answers to this question depending on how you want to frame it.

Why can't this particular bunch hold a length and line? Inexperience.

Why do we not consistently produce quality spinners? Conditions.

Etc etc.

Yep exactly this, with experience they will improve, it is a baptism of fire no doubt but I can remember Ashley Giles doing well to hold down an end allowing the rotation of the seam bowlers. Playing 2 spinners who have one Test Match between them was always going to be difficult. The Indian batsmen have seen this and gone on the attack placing the bowlers under even more pressure.

This is playing out how most, including myself, predicted, and it is a routine exercise for India on a slow, spin-friendly pitch.

This could get very grim indeed if it's rinse and repeat for the other four venues. Joe Root will become, in essence, a front line spinner.

I understand why they've gone for Wood but there's nothing in this pitch for the quicks.

There's definitely a lot of talent in Hartley and especially Rehan.

I've made this point before, but a lot of it comes down to team selection in games that don't suit spinners. When a talented spinner is found they're not being played in county cricket, so the only option is to play them for England to get experience.

That doesn't mean playing them once every couple of years in spinning conditions, but giving them games in England and on tours to other countries. They're not going to get better by not playing, so we have to either play them ourselves to help them improve or send them to other countries at club level to get the games in.

As good as Kumble was India were never this dominant even back then. Ashwin and Jadeja bring an all-round factor which you won't get with a kuldeep. Also, Kuldeep the test bowler is yet to be tested. Maybe he is the answer but it won't be that easy.

You rate Hartley? Watched him a decent amount for Lancs and never rated him outside of being useful in white ball Cricket as he can bat a bit too.

Joe Root with better figures than Ashwin and Jadeja.

Clearly, he's the best spinner between both teams.

First time away openers have put up 40+ in both innings in 8 years. England off to a good start.
