That's the nub of the issue and something that people defending Rashford (admittedly very few of them) don't seem to get. He's not being hung out to dry because he went on the piss and missed a training session. He's being hung out to dry because this lack of dedication/professionalism comes in the middle of the season where his attitude/performances on the pitch couldn't have made it more obvious that there are major doubts about whether our most highly paid player is fully committed to the cause. So when we get cast iron evidence that this is definitely the case, it puts everything we've been watching all season into a new, much worse, perspective.
This is the point I think most people are missing. I'm not saying footballers should not have a life, but at the same time I have no sympathy for the perceived trials and hardships of the modern footballer. I can't name a single other industry where people can make as much money as these guys, and don't have to make massive sacrifices.

Going out clubbing is not that big if a deal, fair enough. But if you're the highest paid player at United, the supposedly star performer who is the talisman, they guy the team relies on to win games.. all the stardom, responsibility and privilege that comes with that position, then yes I do think that people should have to sacrifice something significant to have that. If people are saying that heading out clubbing in the middle of the season isn't something a so-called top, top footballer shouldn't sacrifice, well then it's no wonder we are where we are, and those same people shouldn't be on here hoping for the good times and whinging about a lack of results if that kind of attitude and behaviour is justifiable.

Nobody is saying Rashford can't go to a nightclub, but it's not right that he missed training because of it. That is unprofessional and is a slap in the face to a club that literally just gave him a contract of a lifetime.

Beckham and Ronaldo got questioned on here as did Rio and others....
True that. I know I sound harsh on thinking it`s time for Marcus to go but I don`t agree with the view that his going to boxing matches and doing celebrity things with an entourage, being keen about fashion, etc etc is the problem. The `trappings of fame have got to him` argument I think isn`t what it`s about.

There seems to be a point at which he has become stuck in his maturity as a footballer and he doesn`t seem to be a leader as far as the team is concerned. And the way United has been for some time now, this won`t end well with Marcus doing what he did recently as if it`s just something a high profile United player does. He knows better and there seems to be deliberation going on. A change of environment probably is needed and then it will be interesting to see if he can develop.

I just think he's going through a bad moment on and off the pitch, a lot of people are going through a bad moment and in these times you need some support. We all do.

I don't think he's done here, but what do I know?

Is it not approaching a full year soon? A moment is somewhat of an understatement.
I think he's either lost his hunger after his new fat contract or simply can't motivate himself to be better, and why should he when he's being picked no matter what.
I honestly think both Marcus and the club would be better off parting ways.

Nobody is saying Rashford should not have a life or go out drinking even but you have to turn up for work the next day.
If you pull in a sickie for being drunk and then get caught you will pay for the consequences which is what has happened,
I hope he can return to some kind of form.
I’ve never known a player like Rashford that can be so good one week and so bad the next week.
There is no consistency in his game whatsoever hence why he is not a great player.

If he is having a bad moment off the pitch, take a leave, sort things out and comeback. Thats a sane and easy decision to make.

Maybe not but most people in this thread are using this to say Rashford must be sold, should never play another minute for the club, should get the same treatment as Sancho, etc.....

I think sanity has to prevail, Rashford should be treated like any other player, yeah he needs some form of punishment, be that a fine given to a charity, or maybe the club force him to do some community events, maybe he is benched for a game... who knows, but whether or not he is sold based on behaviour is surely only an issue if his behaviour is persistently deleterious to the team, in training and on the pitch!

A succinct summary of why Marcus` bender and resulting absence from the basic activity that footballers are expected to turn up to especially on that salary isn`t something you just do as a Manchester United player.

I think there is a poster on this thread who needs their name changed to yours. Laughing emojis instead of words is the essence of muppethood.
The thing is is that it's not foreign to being a Man Utd player. You're holding Rashford to standards that better players than him have failed. There's been indiscipline of far greater levels by players in other clubs that are doing much better.

Rashford's problem is that Man Utd is doing poorly so it became an issue.

I addressed a specific part of your post, which I don’t find reflective of reality - at least in its entirety.

I don’t even know how you got what you got from my post when I said the exact opposite of it. It’s OK though
You quoted one player as if it represented Fergusons entire tenure. Ferguson didn’t treat players in the late 00s the same as players in the 80s/90s

His problem is that he is doing terrible and is on a silly money contract. The problem is that he is an academy product and a local lad.
The expectation (on and off the pitch) from Rashford is much more than any another player.

For this one, I'm gonna posit that I'm frustrated that the culture of the club is such that we just accept it as a mistake. If it was me he'd be sold today and I bet a lot of United fans who at least want him gone in the summer are in the same boat.

God knows what's going on in his head but he's human so he's allowed at least to just not be with it because we all do it to varying degrees but for the club to just let him apologise and then all is forgotten is ridiculous to me and smacks of nobody taking it seriously.

If I was the manager I'd do a Sancho on him. If i was a CEO or in another position further up in the club I'd be getting rid.

Until we start sending the message to the players that they can't take the piss, how can we ever stop them taking the piss?
Selling players after a few mistakes would lead you having to sell half your squad every summer.

Exactly this. If he's consistently not performing in training and being deliberately disrespectful to the manager then that's bad behaviour. But if he's late once or twice and misses one or two sessions then that's minor. Everyone else in the team is performing badly so it's not a performance thing. He's not putting in enough effort consistently on the pitch though, that needs to be sorted.

But the missed session and being out after a bad loss? Nothing to be sold over.

If you want him sold for other reasons? Fair enough.

My "bad moment" has lasted that long, it's life.... It can be hard, and that's without half of the internet gunning for you, and half of the people around you trying to take advantage. Anyway I've said enough....

What gives me hope with Rashford (and I hope he finds a way to resolve whatever is going on with him), is that he seems to be able to take his medicine when he messes up. He’s not going on twitter to defend himself, seems to be more character in the lad which has me rooting for him moreso then I might for others.
He's kind of done that several times, including 2 weeks ago after the celebration

He has not won anything in his life. Why are there so many people trying to find an angle for him and kinda defend what he did? How on Earth we do not hear similar stories about Haaland, Salah, De Bruyne, who Rashford is on pair with his monthly wages, and have won the lot?

He has a problem with:
  • Common sense decision-making - Like when to go out and when not to. How on Earth are you are almost a decade in the club, and the coach has to tell you that it's a bad idea to go out and celebrate a birthday after a 0-3 thrashing from City? Like really? Are you that daft about the optics?
  • On-field body language - He does not want to be on the field, sulking, no energy
  • Effort - Makes me sick to my stomach when I see wingers busting their guts to help their fullbacks
  • Sacrifice - How on Earth can you duck out of headers and pull out of challenges? I heard a great saying the other day: Money will not win you headers, effort will.
  • Being on time - I remember the Ronaldo thing prior to him going to Real
I would've had sympathy for him if it was one infraction. I truly believe he thinks he is untouchable in this club ad that he can do what he wants, hence his reaction when he was so bad in a game, played 80+ minutes and got angry when replaced.

For all the mistakes the coach has made, I do feel sorry for him, having to deal with Greenwood, Rashford, Martial, Sancho. Especially, when he does not have a backup striker, or back up right winger. Grealish came unprepared for the season, and Pep played Doku. We dont have that luxury.

true, there again the manager's job is to keep players motivated. I believe that the fault is somehow in the middle. Yes this is a difficult (almost impossible) squad to manage, yes it has far more ego then talent and commitment but its also true that ETH's stubbornness and favouritism especially around the players he brought in is felt and is causing problem. Quite frankly I can see United getting rid of both camps in summer.

Not true. I mentioned Pique saying Barcelona was a culture shock because things were a lot stricter and disciplined, and posted a video of Keane - in conversation with Neville - saying a 12-hour bender was a warm-up for them. I mean, a cursory google search got Nani saying this:

"On New Year, we could even go to training drunk and the coach didn't care about it. That's the side of [Sir Alex] that knew how to deal with the players and have the perception to say, 'this day is special, I can't make demands'" [source]

I also didn't take the position that Fergie treated players in the late 00s the same as he did in the 80s/90s. I simply said Ferguson was good at dealing with players and not all notions about his strictness and demands or how he dealt with players are correct or reflective of the truth entirely. Ferguson conceded, shielded and covered-up for his players, often. It's what a manager does.

It's OK, we don't have to wrestle about this.

Funny enough, I’ve partied with Nani two or three times when he played here. Once at Circle.

Players at United, or any top clubs are wild boys.

Wrestle about what?

I’m not sure what you posted in relation to my original post that suggests I’m misremembering SAF years. You do you man, we are on different wave lengths, I’m ok with that.

Nani, the epitome of pull your hair out player. Could wow and disgust you in the same game.

Think it was a a chelsea league cup away game that summed him up perfectly. Think it was 5-4, he was sublime and terrible at times, giving ball away needlessly for at least one Chelsea goal.

Yes that's the other side of it, there's always going to be a bit of extremism.

Nobody batted an eyelid last season when we were away to Wolves after he was dropped because he was playing well and came on and scored the winner in that game.

Nobody should care what people get up to in their personal lives as long as players are turning up every day when they should and delivering on the pitch.

The problem with Rashford is that he's not delivering on the pitch, and then something like this breaks and it compounds the issue.

The point I think is that Rashford has a huge responsibility to Manchester United, and should have to deal with the consequences.

People have weird takes then like this is the last straw, get rid etc etc.. and then the opposite side is like "he should be allowed to have a life etc etc".

I think for the position he's in, the very least that is expected is to turn up for training every day, no excuses, unless something is genuinely wrong.

He is allowed to have a life. Going out drinking for half a day is not something you can do as a professional footballer. If you choose that life, that means not drinking.

Since he is not performing on the pitch, there really are no excuses to be made.

Keane was a fecking nightmare with the drinking so no wonder he’s sticking up for Rashford. But despite all of that Keane never gave less than 100% in any match. He left everything on the pitch. The same cannot be said of Rashford.

I don’t recall Keane ever having less than an 8/10 performance. If the same could be said for Rashford then all of this would be brushed under the carpet. 100% guaranteed.

But when your £350k a week “superstar” is playing like shit for over half a season and is missing training due to drinking there’s a big fecking problem.

Rashford is a talented lad, but he’s flushing his career down the toilet. I don’t know what is wrong with him but he hasn’t looked happy for a long time out on that pitch.

Unless it’s MG, who I believe would get booed . Not sure Rashford would though it’s a reasonably small transgression at the end of the day
People need reminding when Rashford gave a group of supporters gathered outside OT after a match the finger.
I thought that was a nice touch by your biggest wage earner, giving the people who help pay your extravagant wages the finger, I’d like to give him a one way ticket out of the club.

Just wait for the cultists to reply the poor little millionaire's feelings were hurt after stealing a living two seasons ago.

And he's doing it again this season but these people are still blind to it. Proper Stockholm syndrome.

Hope he gets some minutes from the start or the bench tonight; can score and/or assist, play well and put this sorry chapter behind him. He has absolutely an idiot but the reaction has been overboard from some supporters.

The reactions are not just from this latest feck up, they have been build up from seeing him being absolute lazy on pitch for far too long despite being paid like a movie star.

I think our fanbase in general is patient with players and managers. Rashford wouldn't last two seasons in most top clubs in europe. I'd say the majority of United fans were over the moon when Maguire started doing well this season, because that's how you get fans on your side.

I also think that not everyone can play for United regardless to talent. You need to have a high level of mental resilience to deal with the high expectations and navigate through setbacks. Players like Rashford probably feel sorry for themselves and this ends up being just a job for them with no passion or even a good level of professionalism. We should sell while we can.

Yeah I think this is fairly accurate. I guess as much as we would all love it to be true, football at the elite level just doesn’t bring everyone the same happiness. And definitely paying youngsters way too much, way too early (Rashford, Sancho) could be their ultimate undoing as they lose their hunger and desire to compete and do what it takes (sacrifice) to stay at that level. I hope they turn it around but yeah, the signs aren’t great.

I really hate that phrase.

anyway back on topic he’s got 4 months left to show what he can do before judgement is going to happen on the squad.
