Manchester United legend Denis Law is backing the club to clinch another remarkable treble after powering their way to the FA Cup final.

The former Scotland international watched with delight as Sir Alex Ferguson's men brushed Watford aside at Villa Park on Saturday just four days after trouncing Roma 7-1 to reach the Champions League semi-finals.

Law is now convinced they can go on to repeat their treble success of 1999.

He told BBC Radio 5 Live's Sportsweek show: "They are now in the final of the FA Cup, I think for a certainty they will win the league, so it is just a matter of if they play well in the semi-final against AC Milan, there is a great chance they can do the treble.

"I think the league is definitely won. In cup finals, it is the team that has a little bit of luck, but the way they are playing, the confidence is so high and with players like (Cristiano) Ronaldo and (Wayne) Rooney...

"They will win the league, I am sure they will win the FA Cup and with a bit of luck, they could win the Champions League."

Tuesday night's demolition of Serie A giants Roma set up a Champions League semi-final showdown with AC Milan with either Chelsea or Liverpool awaiting the winners.

That victory represented a statement of intent and brought back memories for Law.

He said: "Apart from when they won the Champions League several years ago, this would have to go down as probably the greatest victory Sir Alex Ferguson has had in the competition so far.

"They have got everything, the way they play. Don't forget, you are talking about a team that is second in the Italian Serie A, you are not talking about a team from Andorra, if they have got a team from Andorra.

"This is something very special, so when you beat a team like that 7-1 - and it must be a record defeat for an Italian team in a European competition - there is a great chance they can do the treble.

"It was very similar to a win we had going back into the '60s when we went to Benfica and we beat them 5-1 in a quarter-final and then we were in the semi-final of the FA Cup as well.

"Unfortunately we had injuries and in the end, we did not win anything.

"But this time, it is different."

The form of Portugal international Ronaldo, who this week agreed a new five-year contract, in recent months has been superb.

Indeed, Law, who played alongside George Best and Sir Bobby Charlton at Old Trafford, believes he could become the greatest of them all.

He said: "They way he is playing, yes, there is a great chance. He is so exciting and of course when you have got Rooney up front with him as well, that is a formidable duo.

"They could go on and win everything."

Asked to compare Ronaldo to Best, Law replied: "It is very difficult in the circumstances. You are going back many years, but I suppose if Bestie played in this team, yes, they would be on a par.

"In our team, we had Bobby Charlton and Bestie. To play with players like that just raises your game as well.

"If you are not playing well, you know Bestie will do something or Bobby will do something, and that is exactly what they have got in the United team at the moment."

I respect his optimism but we Have Won Nothing Yet. If we are not on top form in the remaining weeks we will win nothing. So lets take each game one at a time and aim for victory in each one.

We now have to beat chelsea for the premiership title and the FA Cup.

Any bet we may meet them too in the Champions League Final. :nervous:

Across the Universe....from Old Trafford.
if you compare to 1999...the FA Cup looks tougher...but the League then was won on the last day...we 'look' in better shape this time round..

The CL...I see us going through to the final...and either Chelsea or Liverpool will be 'easier' than Bayern...well Bayern then I mean...

Stroh wird Gold, und Gold wird Stein.
"I think the league is definitely won... [Manchester United] will win the league".

I wish that Law would have offered some more of his observations as to why he seems to be so confident with our league position. We are three points ahead, we do have a superior goal difference, and our final league fixtures are easier than Chelsea's.

But despite those facts, I am still a bit uncertain as to how much confidence in becoming Champions of England we can have at this point. To make such bold statements as Law has made is a bit premature, in my opinion; and I confess to being rather puzzled by them.

Ah well, roll on number 16!
