Just don't want him to be rushed back (and believe Amorim will be careful with that). Would be nice to have Amad for Europa games if we're still in the competition in May but most important thing is him being fully fit for next season.

Also just realised we'll be without him next December and January because of AFCON. Same with Mazraoui.

People keep saying this, don't know why - did he say or leak this somewhere? He scored a hat trick from RWB and Amorim wants him playing very high in that role. If he's scoring and providing assists from RWB then why would he kick up a fuss? On the contrary, I think he'll believe he's found a role and manager who can get the best out of him.

He didn't really score a hattrick from that position. We were changing shape significantly during those goals, so only the first came from RWB. He was playing as a right winger for the second (we briefly changed to 4231 where the entire defence shifted over and Amad just stayed in attacking areas) then as a #10 for the third (where we'd switched back to 3421 but it was Antony who had dropped back to RWB).

I would hope he's equally happy to play either role though, as long as he is able to get forward plenty from RWB.

It really depends on how much we rate Heaven. If he didn't emerge I'd say the position was a necessity and yeah Branthwaite seems like the new United prototype. Strong, fast, decent amount of technical ability.

I wouldn't mind rotating between Heaven, Maz, Martinez and Shaw for another year.

Assume all of them apart from Maz (but even him sometimes) are gonna be injured most of the season.

If we sign at least two wing back options then I agree, as it means Maz can play CB permanently and arguably Dalot in the event of an emergency.

De Ligt, Maguire, Maz, Martinez, Yoro competing to start, + Heaven + Shaw + Dalot for depth.

Maybe needs another youngster or another Evans type free signing for some squad depth, but dropping a big fee on a first choice player seems like a waste of funds that could be used elsewhere.

We have enough defenders. We can't just sign 25 new players because of some extra ordinary scenarios where all of the ones we have get injured.

Why would we sign 25 players? Shaw and Martinez are always injured, the unusual scenario would be that they are fit and can be relied upon.

Yeah, at some point you have to accept your crippled by injuries and play from the youths

I mean of course he's 'on the way' back, he was on the way back from the day he got injured. Without any sort of timeline there's not much to take from this.

I'd be surprised if we see him back before the end of the season particularly with any sort of sharpness, even if United make the EL final which feels like a stretch.

Because if we are bringing up scenarios where both Martinez and Shaw are out, Mazraoui is inadequate and Heaven is not ready, we should also consider that the first player we sign to cover for them gets injured and the second one doesn't work out, or something.

We have like 8 players capable of playing in the back 3. It's enough.

We don’t have 8 players because Shaw and Martinez are always injured - and it would not surprise me if either/ neither played for the club again. Shawn used to have some athleticism, but neither are anywhere near the right players to play that role - even if fit, which they aren’t, and more likely than not, never will be.

Heaven has played 200 mins of football, and with the best will in the world, he will go through periods where he needs to be taken out of the limelight.

We do not have a reliable left sided CB.

That might still mean you think Maguire, Yoro, De Ligt, Maz and Heaven are enough to get through a season - with no European football and a huge slice of luck maybe. But I don’t.

Martinez has featured in 20 out of 29 league games this year and played in nearly all games in his first season. He is nowhere near 'always injured'.

So you conveniently missed out an entire season, and the rest of this season. Selective stats eh.

By the end of this season he will have missed pretty much half of the league games whilst at United, and that ratio will only get worse next lesson as he won’t be fit at the start of the season.

Yeah he's out with ACL now but it's not really related to injuries that he sustained last year. Once he's back, which will be anytime between August and December I guess, I wouldn't expect his availability to be very limited. He's been unlucky with injuries but it's not like Shaw who just keeps aggravating the same injuries over and over.

Hope you are right, but it’s an accumulation of injuries, and the trend line for him is very bad. Anyway, we should probably call it a day on the Amed thread ref Martinez.
 
Great news.

This season isn’t over yet, and it’ll be exciting to see him feature both as a wing back and a No. 10 in the coming weeks. However, it'll be interesting to see where Amorim chooses to deploy him next season.

really hope injuries wont stop him. He's one of the few on a WC trajectory. A player with talent and workrate. FInally it started to click for him, so fingers crossed this time he keeps himself fit but hungry too.

Yeah, i think its the same question with Bruno - CM or 10.
I think ideally you want to bring in a starter in each position (CM, WB, 10). We wont be able to do that I imagine so i'd be more focused on getting someone good than focusing on one position over the other.
 
I hope it is not a situation of him rushing himself back because he wants to play.

I like the optimism. But isn't it rather likely that those injuries leave marks and increase the odds of new issues rather than decreasing them? (For the record, I kind of agree, we don't need a defender for the eventual case of this or that guy getting injured. That being said, I have a feeling Ruben will want to bring in a CB that is exactly how he imagines the role, for the extended starting eleven (if not the starting eleven) )

I think the general notion of him posting a countdown emoji with a happy face alongside a picture of him in a United jersey insinuates he’s talking about his comeback and happy he’s making the progress. It’s not that deep…

You think it could be deeper still? I'm happy to stop at the perfectly reasonable and sensible conclusion that Amad is simply thankful for the concept of time, but if you think this goes further still...

Maybe he's onto something we just aren't ready for?
 
We need to utilise and train Amad more as a RWB. That would save us a lot of money… him and Garnacho on one side is very scary and would work a treat. Amad likes to come inside and Garnacho likes to stay wide. It would just work.

I would like to see this but think Amad at his best when he has players around him that also have good link up and he can have neat one touch interplay with. The likes of Bruno and Zirkzee are on his wavelength. Garnacho is probably not that guy

You can play him as striker in a U21 game and if he scores 10 times then he has to be a striker?

Amad would be wasted as RWB. He looked good there because we have no alternatives that managed to look even decent there. He is the only one who can dribble and has a mentionworthy amount of game intelligence. He'd look good as a LWB as well, but only because we are used to having no threats on the flanks at all. The wingback role requires elite physicality as a baseline and then some good qualities attacking and being not an issue defensively. Training Amad for this role would be a waste of his talent. He is the best dribbler we have at the club. He is the best in tight spaces, putting him on the wing would just be a waste.

I think, this is another instance of fans misinterpreting "can do a job somewhere" as "thats his best role". Same what happens with our captain.

Agree with this. I don’t think we can really judge his best position properly until we see him at 10 alongside a proper attacking RWB who can carry the ball and make runs off him down that flank. We’ve had a brief glimpse of how much more effective Zirkzee can be having Dorgu running off him, and I think having a more threatening option down the right flank would have a similar impact, helping to open up more pockets of space for Amad to operate in on the inside. When Maz or Dalot were at RWBs with Amad at 10, the opposition knew the main threat was from Amad so he was easier to double up on and close down.

Really hope he's back soon. If we can get him for the second leg against Lyon, we can be quite hopeful. Our general play is good but the attack is amateur level right now.

Don't think he'll be back before May. If we do qualify for semis 2 games will be played on 1st and 8th of May so it's not a given Amad would be even ready for those matches.
