EL W Europa League Semi-Final 1st Leg

Athletic Club 0:3 Manchester United

Wow - did not get a chance to watch the game cause of work but I didn't know it was possible for United to win in an easy way anymore. Nonathletic Club is 4th in Spain!

Wonderful evening, fantastic result. No injuries and key injured players back. It couldn’t have gone much better. Let’s just do a professional job next week now….
That centre half of theirs banned too

It's lovely to see Maguire having a bit of a renaissance and getting the credit for it. He's taken a lot more stick than has been justified over the last couple of seasons, in my opinion.

Ref bottled the second penalty. No chance he was giving that. Very disappointing only to be going home with a 3-0 lead, should be 4/5-0.

But seriously great result from the lads, how nice to play with some composure and control! Two big games left. Think if we do win ill be celebrating like mad....because we get champions league more than the actual trophy

If we were going into the home leg with a 4-0 or 5-0 lead, it would have been an almost impossible task for Bilbao.
3-0 should be good enough, but with this version of Utd, anything could go wrong.

Bilbao had to go safe and defensive in the 2nd half, otherwise the tie could have been out of sight.
Having kept the scoreline down to 3-0, their only option next week at OT, is to go all out gung-ho and attack us.
This Utd could quite easily concede goals, as we did against Lyon.
No complacency!
Unless we can get an early 2 goal lead, it could be much less comfortable ride than some are expecting.

.
We scored 3 away and conceded 0. Cheer up a abit.

I thought united were very good tonight. With the exception of some nervy patches in the opening quarter of an hour or so, I thought that first half was easily the best I've seen all season.

Added bonus of having players like Mainoo, Shaw, Amad and De Ligt returning too. That was a good night.

Great win. Zero confidence against Spurs
We're probably only PL club that would say that this season. They're quite a problem for us and have been under Ange from the start.

They're tailor made to beat us unfortunately, we're physically completely outmatched by them.

It's a really simple setup they have, loads of pace and power all over the pitch to press high and have van de Ven run really fast to mop things up, but we'll struggle with it as we aren't great at beating the press and the players we have that can do so will be easily chased down by them. On top of that, our forward players don't have the pace or ability to hold up the ball for us to go long effectively. The only real exception to this is Amad, we'll need him on top form to have a chance.

I'm praying the artificial pitch bamboozles them next week and they collapse.

Lads, it’s Spurs.

Aren’t they below us in the league? They’re useless and we’re gonna batter them

Cheer up

 I love the confidence, unfortunately I don't share it. They're 2 points behind us in the league but there's a reason they've beaten us 3 times already this season.

Styles make fights. They're extremely strong in our weakest areas, and we aren't at all strong in theirs.

Rasmus wrestles red beautifully after Harry channels inner Phil Jones.

Total footballs I say. Slow clap.

We're a much better team than when we played them back in February. We only lost 1-0 away. We've actually got decent experience at winning cup finals and Tottenham haven't won a cup in 25 years. The pressure will be on them to win it, they're struggling for form and are struggling with key players having fitness issues.

Honestly, I'm confident we can beat Tottenham.

What a weird game. Some really great performances across the pitch... and yet I don't think we were that good? We obviously were very good in the last 15/20 minutes of the first half... and we did well to control the game in the second... but I also thought we were incredibly sloppy at times, and made some odd decisions on the ball. Lots of loose passes too.

But who gives a shit, we just won 3-0 away in Bilbao! Get the feck in.

Also I know have an irriational hatred for Vivian. What a knob.

Literally night and day to what you see from this lot in the league. First half we weathered an early 20/25 min storm but after we got the 1st goal, we just took full command and literally battered them. 2nd half just controlled the game as you’d expect. Disappointing not to add to our tally but that’s a minor disappointment for what was a very very good evening for us.

3-0 pretty much flattered them as there would have been no major surprise if we had won that game by a 6-7 goal margin.

Have you got a mad short memory or something?

They were great. What is it you want from opposition fans?

What an odd reaction to that game.
They created a great atmosphere. I hope our fans do the same next week.

It is objectively funny, however, seeing Spanish football fans up in arms about objectively correct refereeing decisions not going their way, in light of all the things they normally get away with in Europe.

If you had "Harry Maguire breaks a dude's ankle on the wing...twice...and sets up a goal...from the wing" on your bingo card, you win.

No one had that...ever. This alternate timeline we've moved to since Jan 20th has created all kinds of weird anomalies that include "Harry Magure: World Class goal scorer and creator."

What a strange time we're living in.

United 1/1000 to qualify for the final, Bilbao 28/1

Bookies really are miserable bastards.

Yeah, maybe but history is the context. I wouldn't go as far as call it a disgrace. I'm not sure the Queen would have gotten a minute's silence in Dublin, so it would have been foolish to expect it. The church's complicity in the Franco regime, which was particularly cruel in País Basco was real. Expecting people to be respectful to people they openly disrespect is a bit silly.
That depends on the sport I’d say

I'm not buying any of this talk about "Spurs have already beaten us 3 times this season".

First defeat - this was us under EtH, not the current setup.

Second defeat - marked by two terrible goalkeeping performances from Bayindir and Forster, and a game that could have gone either way.

Third defeat - we had just come into a massive injury crisis after losing Mainoo and Amad. Lindelof was the only senior player available for the bench.

If it truly is us vs Spurs in the final, I'm not taking any of these 3 defeats this season on board as a serious sign of them having the wood over us.

Just a small stroke of luck I've noticed. The EL final is on Wednesday the 21st. We play Chelsea on the Friday before, Spurs are away to Villa on the Sunday.

Who is on a yellow? Garnacho, Amad, Yoro, Mount? Superb to avoid a yellow for Casemiro and Ugarte, but I want Yoro to play in the final (fingers crossed) so he can't pick up a yellow. And obviously the other three need to be told to do absolutely nothing stupid.
I don't know but checked the ruling. Sit out after 3 yellows but quoting the rules as per:
https://documents.uefa.com/r/Regula...024/25/Article-63-Yellow-and-red-cards-Online

"Exceptionally, all yellow cards and pending yellow-card suspensions expire on completion of the play-offs. They are not carried forward to the league phase. In addition, all yellow cards expire on completion of the quarter-finals. They are not carried forward to the semi-finals."

If I'm not mistaken, this means nobody can be banned for the final as the most yellows collectable before the final would be two.

Their red-carded defender is automatically suspended for the return leg.

Yes only a straight Red card or 2 yellows in the 2nd leg will ban anyone from fimal

Great result but bit dissapointed with how we played the 2nd half. Lost the ball too easily in the midfield I felt. Exciting to see Amad back in atleast!

Feels so much better against Spanish pricks.
Take that you Spanish twats.

While I share your scorn for Spanish teams, Atheltic and their fans are generally very likeable compared to most.

I reserve my disdain for the Sevillas, Villareals and Sociedads of this world. We recently battered Sociedad and we owe the other two jammy cnuts a good beating in the future.

Had to work during the match, so I ignored any notifications and just now got to watch the replay.

Holy shit at Harry Maguire looking like a prime 1990s winger.

That little flick by Ugarte (i think) to put Bruno through for goal #3 was really nice too
