The 5 best English Footballers ever

Bobby Moore was a centre back, Duncan Edwards wasn't

I trust these folks know what they are talking about.

http://red11.org/mufc/edwards.htm

I totally disagree that you have to have seen Edwards play to comment about him. Enough great footballers, mangers and regular football fans have seen him play and would argue he was even the greatest footballer ever.

Anyways I will take the word of me dad who did see him play!

Scottish wasn't he? this was about English footballers...

but yeah Dixie Deans scored an amazing amount of goals...Ok it was the Scottish league...

Since when did Everton play in the Scottish league?

As for Dein's nationality, I had no clue he was Scottish, or if he really is...considering you're saying he scored many goals in the Scottish league. He still owns the English first division scoring record with 60 goals in one season.

Was thinking of Dixie Deans of Celtic....

I was also thinking of that 60 goals record...but I do now remember reading that about the Everton legend.

Ron Harris - footballer???? the guy was a thug that kicked everything and anything that moved except the football

He would've kept Rooney, Gerd Muller, Pele and Eusebio in his pocket at the same time.

And you know it. ;)

I just saw you participated in this thread, and I knew it was going to involve you claiming Chopper Harris was one of the top five.

You're getting waaaaaay too predictable. :boring:

Have you ever seen the legend play?

Answers on a postcard, please. :boring:

No, but if he was a legend and as good as you claim he is, he would be talked in the same respect as pele, maradona, gordan banks etc. :nono:

Ahhh so you must be "talked about" to be a legend.

That would mean Duncan Edwards was crap then.
Oh, and David Beckham must be the bestest, greatest, footballer ever ever.

Yes, he was a thug.

You slander England by claiming that Chopper Harris is in the top five.

But Edwards was pure class. And I've seen almost all the footage there is of Big Dunc. Honestly, though, Duncan isn't in the top five either, because he did not live to play enough to earn the tag of one of the five greatest.

So?

I know many who would claim Keane's a thug. Same with Souness. Doesn't stop them from being top players.
Just because football is such a fanny's game nowadays doesn't mean anyone who plays it like the mans game it used to be is a "thug".

Just because a player doesn't do stepovers like Ronaldo, shoot from 40 yds like Gerrard or have a Z-list celeb for a wife like Beckham doesn't mean he's not good.
I was lucky enough to watch Harris in action and I think that he was, unquestionably one of the best centrebacks England produced. Was he a nasty cnut? Absolutely. But how many forwards have got the better of him?

Duncan Edwards
Bobby Charlton
Wayne Rooney
Paul Scholes
Bryan Robson

That I've seen:

Bryan Robson
Paul Gascoigne
Gary Lineker
Alan Shearer
Steven Gerrard

From what I've heard:

Bobby Charlton
Bobby Moore
Duncan Edwards
Stanley Mathews
Gordon Banks

Didn't think many people here would be up to scratch on our history.

Spose i should have put Bobby Stokes on there just for "that" goal.

That was a hard defeat to take after our young team had played so well all season. Still, the following year make up for it to some extent.

All these name checks for Lineker? There's been better strikers than him IMO, Jimmy Greaves for a start.

My top 5 (That I've seen)

Bobby Moore
Bobby Charlton.
Kevin Keegan.
Alan Shearer.
Glen Hoddle.

Including reputation of players from even before my time:

1. Stan Matthews
2. Duncan Edwards
3. Bobby Charlton
4. Tom Finney
5. Bobby Moore

Of players I've seen or remember from TV when I was young:

1. Bobby Charlton
2. Bobby Moore
3. Gordon Banks
4. Gary Lineker (great at what he did)
5. Paul Scholes

There's only one that matters and that's Bobby Moore

Most Capped England Player

Captained Englands only World cup win

European Cup winner, FA Cup winner, Footballer of the year, World Cup players player and awarded an OBE he even won the most prestigous award in football no less than 4 times (Hammer of the year of course)

Bobby Moore died 15 years to the day today so hats off to the man, he will always be remembered and truely was the best English Footballer

moorerc1.jpg

RIP Bobby, if there was one footballer today who is half the Gent you was the game would be so much better

R Charlton (easily)
Matthews
Moore
Keegan (former European player of the year)
Greaves

I never saw Edwards. There's a reason why the best players are forwards, which is why I put Moore below Matthews. Shilton is the best English goalkeeper I've seen.

that I've seen:

Bobby Charlton
Gordon Banks
Bryan Robson
Paul Scholes
Stan Matthews (although it was in '63 and he was about 97)
or Greaves

feel perhaps I should put Greaves in instead of Matthews due to the fact that I didn't actually see him play as a great player, but doddering around OT not really doing much - he was an incredible 49 years old - might even have been 50, which was the age he retired. My old fella reckons he was a protected species amongst the referees and Tom Finney was miles gooder

Bobby Moore, for me is the most over-rated player of all time. Excellent player, due to his anticipation/reading of the game but he couldn't tackle, run, head and as usual, whatever standard any cockney fecker reaches, the media will exaggerate it x2. fecking Brooking and Peters were even more over-rated.

Based on history books, internet posts, pundits and all time awards it must be something like this:

1)Stanley Matthews
2)Bobby Charlton
3)Bobby Moore
4)Jimmy Greaves
5)Gordon Banks

There were several top players offocurse. Gascoigne,Waddle,Hoddle,Peters,Lofthouse,Shearer,Lineker,Barnes,Beckham,Scholes,Le Tissier,Keegan,Owen,Robson etc etc
