Why is O'Shea playing in midfield when we have Gibson on the bench. Not the greatest confidence boost for the lad.

At full time when we've got a hard-fought, solid victory, so many of you muppets will be sitting there feeling like dingbats.

Good thing to keep Rooney out of this game. I'm glad he has protected Rooney from the Everton fans.

But why no Hernendaz? Surely he offers more off the bench then Owen. O'shea in midfield...hmm. Still, decent lineup. Hope we can get a good result.

Hernandez came back from International Duty very late

This, he also has personal life, he is not a slave to MUFC.

All of you slagging him off, just feck off.
He is an employee of Manchester United and our best paid player his job is to play football. His personal life just interfered big time with his professional life .... entirely of his own doing. Fans have every right to hold that against him.

From BBC Website:

1221: Everton v Man Utd team news
Phil McNulty reports: "Everton boss David Moyes has gone without a recognised striker in his team - an intriguing way to combat the chronic lack of goals that have undermined their start to the season. Plenty of threat provided by the likes of Tim Cahill and Marouane Fellaini though. No Rio Ferdinand for Manchester United, but Gary Neville is back. Michael Owen remains on the bench despite the very obvious absence of Wayne Rooney.

Interesting!

O'Shea's probably been chosen over Gibbo because Everton like to win headers and O'Shea's good at winning those. Everton's play doesn't come through the centre on the ground so O'Shea won't have to play a proper protective DM role. He just has to win headers.

Other than that, I'm still confident and it's great to see Gaz back, such a legend. If Berbs can continue his recent form we'll run away with it.

I think this team will actually do better then if Rooney had played in this game.

SAF is right to back the player, but also to protect him from an all mighty bollacking.

Rooney's been shit against Everton for the last 2 years anyway, so it's not like we have lost THAT much. I would have bet on him to get a red card so i'm actually relieved he's not playing.

I had a feeling we were going to draw, but now i think we could win this 2-1.

For what Rooney has done, it's Fergie's decision not to play him and he'll take the credit or criticism for it depending on the result.

I'm never happy seeing JOS in midfield.

Gibson has no future at this club if he can't get in the team when Carrick, Anderson and Hargreaves are all injured.

Took Rooney out of my fantasy team last night. Finally I make a good decision.

 Worst lineup we've put out in years? Don't you muppets remember when we were playing Carrick and Fletch in a back 3?

It's not a bad side at all.

You can see Fergie shaped up to play Carrick, Scholes and Fletcher and due to Carrick's injury has had to adjust the line up late. No Anderson or Hargreaves forces his hand abit and Gibson not really suited to play the holding role he wants for this match, so JOS is the logical choice. It also gives the added advantage of keeping some height in the side which is something we can lack.

Berbatov has to start on form so no problems with playing him as the lone striker and there is no reason why he can't play well there.

I don't know the full reasons for resting Rooney but I'd back Fergie's call on it.

This side is more than good enough to get a result. The front three are all very good players, the defence looks strong enough and the midfield is alright considering the problems. Only real thing that stands out is I don't know who is going to be getting on the end of the things or getting into the box without Rooney.

I don't think the bench is that weak either considering Valencia and Hernandez could not make it following international week. Two goalscorers in Macheda and Owen, Rafael if we need a more attacking threat at full back and Park and Gibson as midfield options.

Surely we can do better than utilising John OShea in midfield again. I know Carrick, Anderson and Hargreaves are all out. But surely Gibson should be getting the nod ahead of OShea, as already said it is a bit of a slap in the face for the lad.

Wow. Just realised some people are unhappy that Gaz is playing. I wish there was a basic test before you could call yourself a United fan. Like, you know, having a brain.

Fergie says no Rooney cos he gets terrible abuse and we've a fantastic squad so we'll play without him. He says he'll play on Tuesday.

I wouldn't say that. Gibson has done nothing to prove he has defensive qualities that are better then O'shea. If we go down a goal or two i think we will see Gibson. If we're up a couple of goals and comfy we will see Gibson.
Unless it's a tight game i think we should see him on at some point.

His long term future is still debatable, but i think he was not picked for this game simply because defensively he's not good enough.

Hope we get to see Macheda this afternoon, but I'm guessing Owen will be picked before him if we need goals.

classy and mature response there from Moyes. he could have milked the situation , given his history with Rooney. Went up in my estimations
