Are you thinking of different players?
Lingard or Fred? No competition. Always Lingard. Play Matic deep and let Lingard do the box to box role Fred is failing at in this setup. Lingard will press. Links the attack. Loads of energy. And adds goals ala West Ham. Has shown far more when on than VdB has ever done. Yet attracts so many haters.

Thought that was a really good half tbf. Looking positive and other than a 10 minute spell from Villa been pretty much on top. Just hope we can carry it on and convert it in to goals.

Elanga is a breath of fresh air after having to watch Rashford on the left wing.

Great game by Elanga really, needs to improve in many aspects but the attitude, pace and power is there.
Agree. What I like is that he doesn’t shy from defensive duties either like some players who get 200000+ /week do.

10 or 15 minutes went Villas way otherwise a promising half.

It's a little bit concerning they still end up with at least two pretty good chances.

Way better than usual. Completely controlled the game for 30 minutes. They came back into it in the last 15, but we've still been good. More of the same in 2nd half would be great.

Decent half there. Greenwood and Elangs have looked sharp. We are letting them back into it though.

Best team performance in a long time.

That first half hour in particular we actually looked like a fluid, well-drilled, modern team. Couldn't believe my eyes.

In possession we had Intelligent, intense off-ball movement - always a free man for the pass, lots of interchange - while being really compact and organised defensively.

A lot of really good performances, but Greenwood was the standout for me.

Elanga and Varane have been exceptional. De Gea steady as always. Bruno almost too safe but still good, Mason needs to pass it quicker. All in all a good half bar the 10 minute spell in the middle.

The 433 is a much better shape and we look much more comfortable.

Good performance so far. Mason is my MOTM at the present. Such a gifted well rounded player when he's on it.
Elanga is sound. Technically efficient footballer.
Bruno looking better, which is good and Matic still has got it, though I expect him to run out of gas in the 2nd half.

Much better. Bar 10 minutes, we're in control there. Much more urgency, better on the ball. Fernandes noticeably better, far more controlled, directing things, always available. Has picked his speculative efforts. We haven't created much but that's a much better base to work from.

Dominated the opening 35 minutes, Villa had their purble patch for the final 10 minutes with Degea making saves a keeper of his quality would be expected to make. Why United went into snooze mode when controlling it needs to be addressed at half time.

Very mature from Bruno today, so good to see. Greenwood, Elanga and Varane all very good

Love what Tony Langer has shown in that half.

Feels like a long time since someone playing down that side and played with that much energy and made the right decision most of the times they had the ball.

Playing well today. This is more like it. I don't think it is a question of tactics, just picking the right players and dropping the ones out of form. We are looking a proper team team. Elanga and Telles are killing them down that left hand side. Just need to improve the final ball.

Elanga releases the ball at the right times. Keeps it at the right times. A threat.

Couldn’t believe what I was seeing either. I’m in a state of shock after the shit they’ve served up.

Pretty good so far but I feel like we'll lose that defensive intensity before the game ends - moving side to side, tracking runners, sprinting to apply pressure as soon as a midfielder receives it etc.

Need that 2nd goal for comfort.

One touch possession football is good if we don't play Fred. He has made atleast 4-5 mistakes in this half alone. Just bring someone who is competent on the ball, atleast who has s better touch.

Pretty good half, I don't have any major complaints really. Obviously Villa had a period which is to be expected considering they're half decent and it's a home game for them but think we've shown a lot more control in this game than anything else seen under Rangnick so far. Let's hope we can build on it second half and come out with a good win here.

Just so boring to watch only ahead due to a keeper clanger

Greenwood though, if he was under Pep imagine how good he'd be. Hope we get a decent manager in so we don't waste his talent

One of the better performances of the season. We will definitely need a second to win this though in my opinion. Good performances by all, less mistakes and more positivity and effort. Keep this up and win tonight will be huge for morale going forward.

People will say they don’t miss Ronaldo but I certainly don’t miss Rashford. Elanga on the left all day for me, he will only get better and stronger with more performances.

Controlled performance. Not sure if it is more of Villa being poor or United being that much better, but I'll take it.

Bruno actually playing as that 3rd midfielder to keep possession and help calm things at the back instead of trying to play forced long balls at every opportunity possible (even though happened that one time to the right flank and failed. Old habits die hard and whatnot).

Good half. Elanga's been brilliant, great to see a young player grab a chance

First time in a long time I'm actually looking forward to watching the second half!

Bruno isn't as far forward, full backs are keeping the width and Elanga has been a breath of fresh air. Our best half since Palace.

Only problem has been Fred, his passing started to regress the longer the half went on. Hopefully he sharpens up.

Bruno has been unlike himself today. I'm not sure if he's been reigned it by RR or his confidence is low, but he's far less wasteful than usual either way.

    Playing far deeper too.

We need to reserve energy better and that usually only happens when we're in possession. We , and no team frankly, can press for the duration of the game. These guys aren't robots. So, please keep the ball better, United.

We desperately need to sign some midfielders this window. It's getting a bit ridiculous. Elanga and Greenwood have both played quite well though, which is certainly encouraging.

You want Lingard in CM? That would be horrible.
