Despite everything, I'm somehow looking forward to this.

I really hope ten Hag is strong enough to make some big changes to the side.

I dont understand people saying we will start with Martinez, Malacia and Fred. They are all too short to deal with a Brentford aerial bombardment. McTom will start because he is tall and good at defending corners, Shaw will start because he is physically stronger than Malacia. You have to be able to defend as well as attack.

Aye and we can’t do either.

If we wear that 3rd kit we will.
Considering we've just released it before the Brentford match, and the fact they wear white and red - i'd say it's very likely.

We'll get beaten 2-0, the media would write all sort of things about us, well panic sign dross players and the circle would repeat, We most protest against the Glazers to sale the club to anyone capable enough to invest in it.

    In theory, maybe.

Shaw's performance v Brighton wasn't "strong" in any way, shape or form. It was frankly pathetic. Unless EtH has miraculously been able to boost his confidence or whatever since Sunday I'd be very surprised to see him start.

All my early season optimism wiped out in one game! It’s a who knows situation I think now. Has to bench Mctominay for this, we basically had no midfield last week.

    de Gea
    Dalot Maguire (urgh) Varane Malacia
    Eriksen Fred
    Bruno
    Sancho Ronaldo Rashford

    subs: Garnacho, Elanga, VDB.

    Can we squeak a 2-1?

I'm sure Martinez may well struggle against Toney aerially.

But that's the point of Toney. He's in the 88th percentile for headers won, meaning most PL CBs of all sizes struggle against him aerially. It isn't a problem that only exists for us to deal with because we have a shorter centre-back.

We have to deal with that threat the way every other team does and that isn't by simply banking on your CB being better than him in the air.

Seeing Maguire, Bruno, Shaw, Mctominay & Rashford start in place of Varane, Garner, Malacia, VDB & Garnacho will genuinely get to me more than a loss here and it might sound strange but I want to see change.

The first change I need to feel optimism for the long term is to know that poor performances are punished quite simply and motivate those that aren't starting by giving them a chance, introduce competition, it's such a basic thing every club does other than ours and if ETH now falls victim to picking the "Favoured" ones despite their performances like previous managers, I am going to think something more insidious is at play here.

Hoping we win this game, and well too. But hoping even more than a win doesn't turn into a curse in disguise with regards to signings.

There's absolutely no way Ten Hag should be starting McFred together again.

They simply cannot defend and they're cut through so easily.

Maguire needs dropping too, should be Martinez and Varane.

There is absolutely no way on this planet Bruno or McTom should start this game, both however will. I wouldn't mind seeing a 3 of Fred, VDB and Eriksen

We will be saying this a lot this season I assume. I really want to look past that but I can't. His height will be a issue in a lot of games.

People like to bring up Kounde on how another club targeted a short CB but Chelsea were going to play him in a back 3 where his deficiencies can be covered. We are playing with 2 CB system and I fear he will be more exposed against the physical strikers. Fecking Welbeck ran rings around our defense, not looking forward to what other strikers would do. Martinez didn't look particularly quick either although might have to do with him not being match fit yet.

The way some of you lot are talking its as if Toney is a world beater.
Have standards dropped that much ?

If we had a proper midifeld and could keep the ball , we wouldnt have to worry about an average player like him.

Maguire was one our our better players in preseason and in the first game. He clearly isn’t getting dropped and to be honest rightly so at the moment.

He wasn’t even bad in the air in his first game. As usual it’s a minor issue getting overstated.

With Lindelof injured surely Varane plays instead of Martinez for this.

He wasn't one of the "better players" in preseason and the first game at all, he wasn't the worst but equally did nothing to suggest he was one of the better ones, that's crazy for me. However, I'll caveat my original post and say that the main underperforming players then rather than mention names to avoid getting dragged into individual conversations. You must agree that if we lost at home, several players didn't perform.

Not bad but wasn't dominant either. Although it was his first game in a new league so maybe I'm expecting too much too soon.

Yep I’d say there was possibly 8/9 I’d have had ahead of Maguire for issues in that game. It wa basically lost on a tactical error to start a false 9 and equally on how poor our midfield was. The CBs weren’t the issue.

I’d say as dominant as our usual CBs. Saw him head out a couple of corners and crosses im contested areas. His anticipation for their goal was his biggest problem, otherwise he played pretty well overall.

My point is I'd like to see some players dropped for it and encourage those on the periphery to work harder and they will get their chance, create some competition

Sure and you specifically mentioned Maguire as underperforming when he didn’t which is what I’m saying. I agree with your point that those worst performers should be dropped but equally it’s important we don’t just go on narratives established last season rather than judging them on these current displays.

I'd rather have Eriksen play behind Ronaldo and bench Bruno. And I'd rather have Fred/VdB behind Eriksen than McFred. shudder
I’d honestly rather play Garner (or even Zidane Iqbal at this point) over McTominay or van de Beek, and I don’t even rate him highly from what limited viewing I’ve seen of him. Those two are proven nothing players in central midfield.

Martinez was bought to be our starting centre back. He will definitely play here and pretty much every other game.

Interesting you want to see Malacia and Martinez against a team like Brentford. Ivan Toney brace incoming.

We can't start two players who are about 5ft 8 / 9 against a team like them. It's a recipe for disaster.
True. That’d be like Barca playing Mascherano, Alves, and Alba against a Madrid side with Ronaldo and Benzema… oh wait:rolleyes:

It's time to be ruthless and bench these under performing players. Give youth a chance.
