what sort of game were you expecting?
Hard away European game on a dreadful pitch against a team with a very good home record.
The game was just what I expected, happy with the result.
Fellaini had a very good game, Man of the Match for me.
The only person alive agreeing with me being happy we got an away goal at Rostov, I salute you.

My eyes hurt from watching that. Can't complain about the result though, got an away goal and no one got injured. Job done imo.

Well it's all about playing to win and playing for a draw hoping to win luckily. Mkh played on the ground and we scored a goal.
You mean after the long to ball to Fellaini? Which was then cancelled out by the ball over the top goal from Rostov?

We play to get through the tie. We take an away goal and a draw back to Old Trafford after playing on a pitch with less grass than Mordor. Thats a good thing.

It is disappointing that we weren't able to kill off the tie in the first leg.

We were going to win the tie anyway no matter what, so an away win would have allowed us to rest players for the second leg.

Now we are actually going to have to do some work at Old Trafford.

Great result on a dog shite pitch, I can't honestly think of many worse than that. Totally destroyed any kind of game we could play and negated any flair players we had on the field.

They should have done better. The performance in the first half was okay. The second half was a shambles.

There's no no matter what or easy games, They will be playing the 2nd leg three days after a tough QF match v Chelsea.

I dint mind playing the longballs as long as you play to win and not to get through. If you are going to play longballs then you must atleast have some attackers staying high up the pitch to pick up second balls and pose a goal scoring threat ourselves to try to win the game , as it would also really knock the confidence out of opposition to not play longballs themselves an press high to win second balls to be in control of the ball. With the games comming thick and fast wd need security.

I really don't know what sort of game people were expecting here. You can't expect to dominate a football match when you can't even pass along the ground.

We got the result needed. As Bayern demonstrated it's not uncommon to come away from their place with nothing. We've played ourselves into a key position in the return leg. We were playing to win anyway, I don't know where you're getting that from. We had some of our key players out there a few days before we play a quarter final.

Are you not familiar with their home record against top European teams? Exactly what sort of winning margin do you think we should have come away with?

People probably wanted the 2nd half to match up to the first. I think that's a reasonable expectation. If we'd have done so you're probably taking a win home.

It doesn't matter though, we should smash them at OT.

Stating the obvious here but Champions league football can't come quick enough.

I thought the football deteriorated along with the pitch. If that's even possible.

I will say that I was disappointed to see us surrender a 1-0 lead and would be loathe to call this a great result as taking a lead to Old Trafford would be more suited to being classed as great but that doesn't mean that I am not happy with it. I think that given the circumstances such as the shambles of a pitch which was akin to playing in a skip, players who fell like sacks of potatos at the slightest glance, a referee who might as well have been officiating from a deckchair with a handheld 8-inch black and white monitor and a general environment that was not even conducive to football above the status of lifeless, we did well to leave that craphole with a 1-1 draw and, more importantly, an away goal and so in that regard the result was good. We should have enough in us, regardless of the team, to comfortably see off this rag-tag bunch of also-rans in the return leg on a pitch that doesn't resemble the crumbled ruins of an ancient city.

Under the circumstances, a decent result and no injuries. A win and a good performance would have been a bonus, but it was job done in difficult surroundings. Pitch was barely fit for a Sunday League game. Should be minimum standards set by UEFA with fines for teams not complying.

It is a lead in a way, obviously a 0-0 draw would see us through. Mourinho excels in games that you don't have to take any risk.

We could and should have won the game 2-1 or 3-1. Rostov are not a team of footballers, but thugs.

We won't be looking for a 0-0 draw at home. That would be ridiculous. We are many levels above this team of thugs and cheats. Mourinho should see this as an opportunity to record a large, morale boosting victory as a show of intent to the other teams in the competition, worthy of our status as tournament favourites. We need other teams to fear us. A resounding 4-0 or 5-0 win would do the job. Mhkitaryan was outstanding and I hope he plays the second leg.

Onwards and upwards from here. A win at Stamford Bridge on Monday followed by a large victory in the second leg against Rostov at home. We will be well on our way to a trophy laden first season for Jose, and a fresh start and turning point for Man United.

    Those thugs beat bayern 3-2
And I can see how that happened. Rough house tactics, foul after foul, hysterical diving, frequently stopping play and a horrible potato farm of a pitch basically make it impossible for teams to play normal football.

I am very pleased that Jose set the team up precisely in anticipation of that. Fellaini suited this game very well and it's no surprise he played well. Jose showed his tactical acumen and adaptability today and proved once again why he is the best. However, I am still disappointed as a fan that we couldn't pull off the win. Had we been just a little bit more ruthless, with a bit more luck, scoring two more goals wasn't out of the question given the difference in quality on display.

We may well win by 4 or 5 but it'll be because they have to come here and a score, not park the bus like the teams we've struggled against this season. Mourinho's tactics perfectly suit counter attacking teams that have to come at us and we have space to play into on transitions to attack.

My thoughts on last night :

    1. Had to adjust our play to that pitch. See how high the ball bounced ?
    2. Good result given the circumstances
    3. Good tactics
    4. I worry Ibra looks at pitches like this and says to himself, "Rostov away on a Thursday night, on a pitch like this ? WTF am I doing here in my last couple of playing years? "
    5. Watching the Lyon v Roma game, I feel both of those teams would knock us out, if we do progress. :(

Zlatan has already said DIRECTLY that his decision to stay will not depend on CL qualification. He said this himself. So all speculation on this issue needs to be put to rest. It is a myth that top players won't join clubs who aren't in the CL. If so, all of our players, along with Liverpool and Chelsea's players, would have submitted transfer requests by now. I don't quite see Hazard wanting to play for Benfica or Dortmund. Do you? Besides, Rostov themselves were in the CL!!! So even if we were in the CL we would have to play teams like them! Bayern had to make a trip to their potato field stadium too!

Secondly, Lyon's victory over Roma is good news for us. There is no way we lose to Lyon. Roma would have posed a threat but there's no way we lose to Lyon.

Am just saying Ibra taking his normal type shot at a ball bouncing towards his shin was like saying, fcuk it, this is how I would shoot on a normal pitch, so am not going to take a 2nd touch to control it first.

Yes I think Lyon would beat us : Lacazette, Fekri and the guy who scored the first goal would, in my opinion beat us.

Can't complain really.. Happy with a score draw considering the state of the pitch, pitches in League 2 are better than that!
Hopefully we'll win comfortable at OT

Why do you think Lyon is a better team than us, that's not really giving enough credit to Jose and the players is it? Zlatan used to score goals against French teams by the bucket load, and we have a team stacked with excellent players. Pogba, Mhkitaryan, Mata, Herrera and Valencia would have a field day against Lyon, apart from Lacazette they really don't look like a threat. I would be more wary of Roma because they are an Italian team and all Italian teams are tactically well drilled. But French teams, as we have seen, tend to be bottlers. I wouldn't be worried about Lyon in the next round if we draw them.
