A draw would be a great result against them. But if Utd beat them, I might just start to believe!

The more I think about this, the more I feel Dan James might start. If we play the diamond we have absolutely no threat on the right; all our play will be on the left and there will be no one to peg back Robertson, who could run riot. It does mean probably sacrificing Cavani (if Ole is feeling really bold, he could leave out McTominay instead, but I doubt it). But I just feel with the amount of threat Liverpool have on both wings, they could cause overloads on the flanks if we play the diamond. If we play James we lose something going forward, but we stretch the play a lot more and give Robertson something to think about with James' pace in behind. Could be frustrating to watch, but whatever way I look at this I think the diamond midfield leaves us really vulnerable, and Ole will know that.

They don't even have a centre back. Just go for the kill from the first minute.

    De Gea

    Wan Bissaka Bailly Maguire Shaw

    Greenwood Fernandes Pogba Rashford

    Cavani Martial

    5-0 United.

Would love a Greenwood winner in the last ten mins after coming from bench. Would be such a confidence booster for the young lad after having a average start to the season.

Absolutely not. We wont be attacking for the majority of the game and we cant afford a lazy fecker like him strolling around when we dont have the ball. Which will be most of the game.
The only lazy feckers are users like you who write this bs about Martial.

I think we will go with 3 centre backs for this. With Rashford and Martial drifting wide to exploit the spaces whenever Liverpool's fullbacks push up.

    ---------------------DDG------------------------
    -------Bailly---Maguire---Shaw--------
    AWB------Fred-----Pogba------Telles
    -------------------Bruno-----------------------
    -------Rashford------Martial-----------
I agree, but with McTominay starting over Pogba and him being the first player off the bench, presumably for a CB if we're down or just being solidly outplayed but hanging on.

Tough to argue Martial on the left of a 3 makes sense, or that James should start, and Shaw has done well against Salah, so it's tough not to lean towards this setup rather than 4 at the back, though

    ---------------------DDG------------------------
    AWB------Bailly---Maguire---Shaw---
    -------Fred----McTominay-Pogba-----
    ---------------------Bruno-----------------------
    -------Rashford----------Martial-----------

would not at all surprise me either, with Cavani presumably the first man up.

    Anthony Martial latest
“I am going to give everyone a chance. Anthony is not out of it.

Only ones certainly out are Brandon and Phil Jones - they are the two definitely can’t make the game. Others maybe doubts, but fingers crossed.”
Hmm, if Martial isn't 100% I'd guess it'll be 3 at the back and Cavani up top with Rashford, Bruno as a false 9 basically.

Feck this shit, just play the strongest lineup, their pick us apart. Why play almost unfamiliar system in one of the biggest games of the season?

I'm 90% sure if one gets the distance run data Martial will match up well with most forward players in the league.
Lingard also runs alot when he plays but its aimless.
I watch Martial closely and he rarely contributes when we dont have the ball.
I dont think he should start this game. It needs intensity and that isnt him. Plus he's in shocking finishing form also.

Some incredibly negative lineups in this thread. I get Liverpool are a decent team but they quite literally don’t have any fit CBs. No excuse other than to go at them here. If we lose like cowards I’ll find it very frustrating.

Put your house, your car, and all your life savings on it being 0-0. Despite all the chat, neither team will want to lose.

Going away to the current PL Champions, who haven't lost a home game in the league for about 4 years, knowing that on a derby day form doesn't matter at all, and you think throwing the kitchen sink at them will guarantee a win?

    You've watched football before right?

This is a must not lose game than will see us revert to a counter attack and Liverpool be scared to venture out of their own half.

    Expecting 5 at the back:

    AWB--Bailey--Maguire--Shaw--Telles

    ----------McTomminay--Fred---------------

    ---------------Bruno-----Rashford------------

    --------------------Cavani-------------------------

Dan James doesn’t track back well. Apart from raw speed and cutting inside what will he offer us against Liverpool? I don’t think countering Liverpool’s blisteringly fast wingbacks with Dan’s speed is the answer.

Did I say throw the kitchen sink at them? I just think we have to be positive. There’s people on here saying play Fred, Matic and McTomminay. We do actually have to turn up and play football, this isn’t the Mourinho era.

I think it's under-appreciated how much pressure Liverpool and Klopp are under.
    • They have a long unbeaten home league run to defend.
    • They have a PL title to defend.
    • They're three points behind us in the league and would hate for it to go to six.
    • They could be third tonight if Leicester win, and fourth before kick-off tomorrow if Spurs win well.
    • Their last three results in the league are Draw, Draw, Loss.
We really do have to take advantage of the opportunity to give Liverpool a huge psychological blow.

Again, can you recall a time when we've turned up to Anfield and attacked them? Even under Fergie, with Ronaldo, Rooney and Tevez we didn't attack them, it's stupid to all of a sudden think we're cock of the walk because we're 3 points above them in the league.

I can’t think of a time that Liverpool didn’t have a CB fit? Fortune favours the brave. That doesn’t mean we should be suicidal obviously but it does mean we shouldn’t be going there to park the bus. We didn’t against PSG and even though we lost I thought on another day we would have come out deserved winners. We are good enough to go and impose ourselves onto them.

They got Williams, who is a CB, and Fabinho can play there. They're not slotting in two Sunday league players who are going to have a few pints before kickoff. All these lads have played football at the highest level and will be preparing to play in those positions all week.

And I'm sure I don't need to remind you we once beat Arsenal with a midfield of Fabio, O'Shea, Gibson, and Rafael.

This game is down to who wants it more and who's up for the fight. Anything other than playing a counter attacking cautious game on Sunday is as naive as it gets and will be exactly what Klopp wants us to do so they can hammer us.

Do you really fancy our defence 1 on 1 with Salah, Mane and Fabinho?

I fancy it more than I fancied playing Neymar and Mbappe and we beat them away this season.

Not a derby, you know how these games go.
That’s very true. To be honest I don’t actually think we disagree, all I ask is we try and play football and don’t do a Mourinho. I can handle losing I just want to see us have a go when Ed get the opportunities.

Is it though and do actual data supports this assertion it would be pretty interesting.

I think Liverpool will come flying out of the traps so the first 20 minutes will be key for us To not panic. If we can weather that early storm and start to impose ourselves on the game, then we have a good chance. I would be delighted if it was 0-0 at halftime as I believe we will have more game changers at our disposal during the latter stages of the match.
