the team hasn't earnt the trust yet, a win or even a draw at Liverpool will go a long way towards that though
A draw would most likely give up league leadership to City (on lost points) so it’s not what we need to aim for

it's better than a defeat and City will drop points themselves

Exactly, isn't their game in hand vs Villa? And another one vs Everton?
    Yup

Nothing will be won or lost today whatever the result but give me a point and staying top this evening and I'll rip your arm off

A lot can be won today. For example, going 6 (six) points ahead of Liverpool - it will be serious stuff actually, six points is a significant margin

A point wouldn't be a disaster for me but it feels like our best opportunity at their place for ages with no fans and key defenders missing.

Surely Martial isn't fit if it was his hamstring/groin against Burnley?

We're going to lose point(s) around the 90th minute mark and I'll spend my Sunday night crying.

Feeling strangely confident about this which probably isn’t a good thing as we usually get beat when this happens...

Watched the highlights for the last time we went to Anfield, and what a difference of a side we have.

    We lined up;

    De Gea
    Lindelof - Maguire - Shaw
    AWB - Fred - Matic - Williams
    Andreas
    James - Martial

That side is so weak compared to what we can put out today. I have to say I’m not convinced we will get a result but if we can it’ll be a massive knock to Liverpool’s confidence and a real boost to ours.

I think Liverpool will line up; Allison; Trent, Matip, Fabinho, Robertson; Thiago, Henderson, Wijnaldum; Salah, Firmino, Mane.

I think getting in behind Trent and trying to pin Cavani on a probably not fully fit Matip is key. If Thiago plays at 6 as well I actually expect Bruno to be relatively free, as Henderson will be tasked with Pogba to try and match up to him physically.

I think we’ll play a diamond of Fred, McTominay, Pogba and Bruno. McTominay will be to the right to try and help AWB with the Robertson/Mane overload.

I do wonder if Ole will go for 3 at the back again

I don't remember too much about the last game but I seem to recall we actually put in a good account of ourselves in much tougher circumstances than we face today and then there was obviously that Martial miss

    I'm going with this team.

    De Gea
    Wan Bissaka Bailly Maguire Telles
    McTominay Fred
    Fernandes Pogba
    Cavani Rashford
Liverpool need the win, they have to come at us - so on paper this suits us massively. We really need to make sure we are focused from the whistle and not concede a stupid early goal.

We need to be aggressive, assertive and direct.

I hope we've been working on set pieces this week because that's where we can really hurt them. They've got quite a short team, especially with the injuries. We've got Maguire, Bailly, Pogba, McTominay and of course Cavani, with two good takers in Fernandes and Telles.

Whether we win lose or draw today depends on how disciplined and focused our defence is. Our attackers should be able to score 1 or 2. But our defence is up against one of the best front-threes in the world.

Not sure what to predict here, anything can happen. But I think we should be able to get a narrow win or draw at least.

Still maintain James gets the nod to start on the right today in a 4-2-3-1 formation as his pace against Liverpool’s high defensive line will be extremely dangerous and he would be a good foil for defending Robertson’s forays forward. I think it’ll be very risky playing a diamond against a Liverpool side so dependent on width and overloads on the wings. It simply gives our midfield too much to do.

McTominay and Fred to be the double-pivot with Fernandes in front of them. Rashford to the left, James to the right and Martial (if fit) up front.

Very harsh on Pogba after his fantastic run of form but we will need to finish strongly to get any result here and himself, Cavani, Greenwood, van de Beek etc. are all great options to introduce with 20-25 minutes remaining. I think that’ll be Solskjaer’s game-plan: stay in the game for as long as possible and then kick for home in the final stages when the game is open and our match-winners are on the pitch.

I’m going 1-2 United with our winner to come in the final ten minutes.

Good point. Our midfield was much weaker.

James seems like a great idea for counter attacking pace, it may well be. But if he loses the ball as often as he has done in the past it will be wasted spot.

I'd go with this for sure. When we don't have the ball, Bruno can press their CBs with Rashford and Martial tracking the full backs, leaving Bruno is a false 9 sort of position.

Tactically, and on form, i like our chances. But the reality is still that if Liverpool play to their full potential, and our players don't, we could be in for a long night.

Whatever the result, we have put ourselves in a good position.

Feels like waking up on cup final day. Everything you do is just to pass away the time until kick off.

Cavani will be the match winner today.
We need really big performances from our match winners. While not a massive fan, if Pogba can dominate midfield then we will have a chance.

We need to neutralise their attack.

    DDG
    Bailly - Maguire - Shaw
    AWB - Lindelof - Matic - Telles
    Fred - McTominay
    Rashford

Would have liked Bruno in there but too risky with him missing the next game if he's booked.

We'll need Rashford and Martial to stay forward so we can be able to hold and move the ball on the counter. I would have McT and Pogba tasked with providing primary support for our fullbacks, while Fred and Bruno would rush ball carriers in the middle. Anthony's strength, technique and vision will be a huge asset up top so we can have a outlet to advance the ball when we get it. Without the ball, that can easily set up as 4231, and with the ball, any one of 4312, 442 or 4222.

Generally a fan of the diamond vs tough opponents, but considering how strong Liverpools fullbacks are, not sure such a narrow formation is the right way to go.
It doesn't have to be narrow, it all depends on how you set up defensively and giving the midfielders clear instructions on which side to track.
