Sometimes I think it's overprotection. It's one thing to say that Garner isn't ready, but then, if he's not ready he ought not be on the bench to begin with. There's no point making up numbers for numbers' sake. At some point (other than vs. Astana), especially during a period of diminishing midfield depth, Garner has to feature either in the start, or at the very least, from the bench, and not just in safe Europa ties with nothing at stake. It's not throwing him to the proverbial wolves to give him the chance in a game with some importance. That's how players develop character.
