As much as I’d like us to go strong and avenge that defeat at the weekend the rest is much more important. I’d like to see a completely rotated side with most of our main players given the night off. I’d love some silverware this season, it’s been too long but our starting 11 is looking out on its feet already and this is before the World Cup has even started. I’d much rather we’re a bit fresher for the Fulham game and try and get the points on the board before this tournament starts because who knows what state the squad will be in when the league resumes.

Pointless cup, play kids and rest everyone. You can see how knackered our team is now they’re having to play a much more intense style.

Hopefully a few fringe players step up to the plate and give the manager food for thought going forward! Never easy playing well with loads of players that haven’t had much game time though!

Don’t care if we lose. Fulham game is so much more important. Rotate. Get players who need minutes on the pitch and players who need a rest off it.

    Dubravka
    AWB
    Lindelof
    Maguire
    Malacia
    Fred
    McTominay
    Sancho
Bruno (as he got a rest today)
    Pellistri/Garnacho
Martial (hopefully fit enough for 45 or 60 mins)
    Agreed.

I'd hope that EtH will rest some players, but I'm thinking it's all but guaranteed we see Dalot, Martinez, and Bruno start. Bruno has had a game off and Dalot will miss Fulham through suspension anyway.

The rest of the starting line-up is debatable, but EtH won't want to lose two in a row and kill momentum. So, I think the starting XI is going to be a bit stronger than a lot of us will predict.

I'm not convinced he'll start both Fred & McTominay even though I suspect most of us would rather he just did.

I'd also like to see Antony, Martial, and Sancho if they're all fit enough to start, but that's hard to see due to them all lacking match fitness now. Hoping Garnacho keeps his place as it's likely he will lose it after the busy Christmas schedule anyway.

    I'd be hoping for:

    Dubravka
    Dalot Maguire Martinez Malacia
    Casemiro Fred
    Antony Bruno Garnacho
    Rashford

Sub on Sancho, Martial, McTominay, Zidane if possible.

I like that EtH has gone for consistency and picked the same group of players a lot. However, I think it's evident that replacing some players is much more difficult when the options to do so are clearly not match ready.

If we'd have brought Donny on more often, or started him in a couple more Europa League games over Bruno, it might have been easier for him to slot into the side when required. Instead, he just looked invisible.

Hopefully, Malacia can do a job at Right Back as he's actually played some games. But this could be an issue when Dalot is suspended next league game.
Well he was injured so...? Same for AWB. So we had to stick with Bruno and Dalot.

I'd play a 3 man back line in this one and just get after them.

AWB barely played even in the pre season. I think he is one of those not part of ETH plans. My guess is Lindelof/Malacia playing there
    :nervous::houllier:

This would be the ultimate kick in the nuts for AWB.

I'm not having Malacia at right back though. I know it's fairly common practice to have a right footed player at left back, but for whatever reason, it just doesn't work the other way round for me.

I think he already played at RB for us in some game?

Need to beat them for the confidence at least. To be honest, I wont be against being off this competition knowing that 2023 will be absolutely tough. Nevertheless, as much as I hate the likes of Martinez, Mings or Digne, I hope we beat them.

My team, knowing we ll have a tough game on Sunday and assuming that no one will be back for this game.

I would probably play Garnacho instead of Rashford but otherwise agree with this team. Gives a lot of key players rest for the Fulham match.

    Play the rejects.

    Harry,
    Donny,
    Wan Bissaka,
Hell, throw Phil Jones in there too.

Yeah, I mean, we have won so many cups over that last 5 years, major ones too. We don't need this pointless one. Trophies are for the ego anyway.
Just my opinion but I have zero interest in it. Most managers play weakened teams and we already have the FA cup. For me it’s pointless and should be a milk cup/Olympic style rules tournament.

Darn, was thinking "why is this thread up, this game was on Sunday?"
Oops, completely forgot we have CC tomorrow.
Maybe we can win our first trophy after 5 seasons..?
Or maybe we get out of it, so less fixtures this season?
Would not be surprised if we smash them, wish we did on Sunday...

When's the presser for this game? So many predictions with Antony, AWB etc do we know if they are even fit?
I think the brazilian NT physio said Antony has not trained with the squad yet, due to some hip muscle injury. Strongly doubt that he's even in the squad tomorrow.

Still no sign of his press conference but AWB has been back in training for a week or so I believe.

Training clip posted today (assume either yesterday's or Monday's training session). Antony and Sancho missing from the clips and no Bruno either interestingly enough. Hopefully we find out soon..

Considering our recent history, we shouldn’t be cursing one of few trophies we actually have a chance at winning.
Normally I would completely agree, we desperately need a trophy, but not this cup this season.

The squad is paper thin and with the World Cup chaos and the extra Barca matches, going far in this Cup could cripple us. Put everything into the EL and the FA Cup but this can be sacrificed this year.

Plus City own this fecking trophy at this point.

Same story as every year, only more so - there are only two good outcomes in the league cup, lose in your first game or win the thing. There's no prestige in this competition just for reaching the semi-final like in the CL. If we put out a good team tomorrow with the intention to win, then it means playing a strong team all the way to the final. Playing a couple of games in a packed schedule and then losing because you played a couple of reserves along with your first teamers is the dumbest outcome possible. So its all or nothing.

ETH confirms Antony and Sancho are both doubts.

Martial will get some minutes tomorrow.

Erik ten Hag needs to get his shit together. Some suspicious decisions and questionable lineups and subs last two games. The performance on Sunday was embarrassing, to say the least. If I see either of Ronaldo or VdB start, or God forbid both of them, I think I just might have a stroke. They should never start for this club again! Eriksen also has no business starting against teams that will come straight at our midfield.

    De Gea
    Dalot Maguire Martinez Malacia
    Casemiro Fred
    Elanga Bruno Garnacho
    Rashford
I'm assuming Antony and Sancho remain unavailable. We need go all out and crush them. Losing twice against Aston Villa in 7 days is unacceptable. Seeing people snub the competition, you’d think we’ve been lining our cabinet with silver. We’ve not won anything for 5 years. And since it’s very likely we are dropping out of the Europa League in February, tight schedule won’t be an issue later in the season. No point in completely resting anyone as well, we have only one game left before the World Cup. Move Rashford to the left at half time and put Martial up top. Depending on how it goes, sub Martinez and Casemiro.

That was my first thought too.

Forget beating Liverpool, Arsenal, Spurs and drawing to Chelski and Newcastle... he can't beat Villa and needs to get his shit together.

May as well sack him if we don't win tonight?

(Keep the players obviously. Not their fault)

Right footers are played on the left because there are lots more right footed players.
Top quality lefties are overpriced in footy.

The Armchair Fans of Thursday Nights are out in full force here. It’s times like this I am very glad that none of our views will be taken into account by the manager.

I really hate this cup and yet manager after manager runs our players to ground in hope that they can win this. Based on current evidence in the EL I think EtH will too.

Dalot, Casemiro and Eriksen are going to get run into the ground this season.

Traditionally we'd have played a mix of youth/fringe/experience in the earlier rounds for this depending on the opposition but seeing as it's a premier league team we're facing who've just done us on the weekend I think it'll be a strong team.

    De Gea
    Dalot Maguire Martinez Malacia
    Eriksen Casemiro
    Bruno
    Rashford Martial Garnacho

    Subs. Ronaldo, Fred, Mctominay

I always want the team to win and never want them to lose (unless it's a tactical "loss" depending on the circumstances) but would I be really bothered if we weren't in the next round????
    Nope!

What CBJ did give us was beautiful whipped in crosses from the left wing, can't remember too many since tbh.
