Even teams like Newcastle who aren't even in Europe and haven't won a trophy in a lifetime are making wholesale changes.

I'd rest nearly everyone for the weekend. The League cup can wait for a season when we have a squad good enough to compete.

This is my view as well. The Fulham match is far more important for us this season. If our reserves can do a good job and get us through to the late stages, then great but this shouldn’t be a focus.

Normally I would completely agree, we desperately need a trophy, but not this cup this season.

The squad is paper thin and with the World Cup chaos and the extra Barca matches, going far in this Cup could cripple us. Put everything into the EL and the FA Cup but this can be sacrificed this year.

Plus City own this fecking trophy at this point.
Exactly the reason why we should be going for it especially after the results today.

    10 games in 30 days

he needs to heavily rotate and we can finish with a win vrs Fulham

Villa far more intense than us at weekend and far more energetic .... we need to finish on a win before WC

We can easily win this game and the Fulham one at the weekend. I don’t get why some people want to just prioritise the Fulham game. We need to win trophies, that will help In developing the team and giving them hunger for more. That creates a winning mentality. Why do people want us to just roll over and hand city another trophy? We can beat anyone when we’re at our best and we’ve already shown that. This is probably looking at the best chance of getting a trophy this season since we’ve been screwed over in Europe. We can win this and still comfortably finish top 4.

The reason is just the intensity of this season. We currently have two games where there isn't a spot we can play them in the football calendar left, which means we're very likely to have to play Saturday-Tuesday-Thursday-Saturday a couple of times if we go far in all the cup competitions.

Play the second string for both domestic cups. It'll motivate them to keep winning to increase there minutes.

    1Dubravka
    2Bissaka
    3Malacia
    4Maguire
    5Lindelof
    6McTominay
    7Pellistri
    8Fred
    9Martial/Elanga 45 minutes each
    10Donny
    11Garnacho

That was my first thought too.

Forget beating Liverpool, Arsenal, Spurs and drawing to Chelski and Newcastle... he can't beat Villa and needs to get his shit together.

May as well sack him if we don't win tonight?

(Keep the players obviously. Not their fault)
Is this some kind of joke?

Yeah, I very much agree with the bolded bit. It should be every bit as important that we start to win trophies and develop some confidence and a winning mentality than it is just to try to focus on a return to the CL.

Wenger was slated (during the years they were repaying for their stadium) for acting like a top 4 finish was more important than a domestic trophy. But, nowadays, that focus on achieving league objectives - whether it's winning it, top 4, promotion, mid table security, avoiding relegation - seems to be most clubs, managers and fans priority up and down the pyramid. And most cup games just seen as an unwelcoming burden of extra games that effect league chances (for a long time, not just this 'world cup season').

For me, this was the bigger of the two games v Villa. I didn't want to lose either of course but, if we did, I'd have accepted a loss in the league (where we can afford to lose some games and still finish top 4) rather than being knocked out of the Cup. Especially after the blow of finishing second, and facing Barcelona, in the EL. I really don't want to end the first part of the season with the momentum blow of being knocked out of one cup and a very tough ask for progression in another.

It's always worth checking the amount of posts and length of time on the site when you see a post like that.

Many 'old-timers' seem to enjoy posting similar, without a wink or smiley emoji, and then when anyone 'takes the bait' with a serious response they get laughed at for falling for it.

Decent shout for a starting 11. I was trying to balance ‘first 11’ vs ‘play the kids’ in my head and this is pretty much what I came up with too. Have a mix of kids and first teamers on the bench to cover all eventualities. Do we presume Villa go 2nd string too?

I'm shuddering at the sight of some of these 'kids and second string' line ups. They're as good as handing the game to Villa.

If we'd got a favourable draw - which we hardly ever do - then we could maybe get away with playing a starting XI that features players that have barely played all season - for a very good reason in most cases!

But this is a game we need to treat with respect if we're to win. And it's as good as throwing the match - and one of our best chances of a trophy if we took it serious - if we omit all the key starters, and bring in all the players we wouldn't want starting a league game, the Barcelona matches, or any other game we're taking seriously.

I'm hoping we go quite strong. Only resting / rotating a small number - not the whole team just because 'it's the domestic cup and it's become fashionable to do so'. And, given the calibre of opponent, only giving playing time to youngsters who are deemed current first team squad material - which is only really Garnacho, and, at a pinch, Elanga. But definitely not starting both together in attack as if it's an U21 or EFL Trophy game.

Just seen the remaining teams in the competition and there’s only really City and Liverpool to concern us. This is a very winnable trophy if we get past Villa tonight.

    Ronaldo

In case of injuries to the first team, we need players who can step up. Playing squad players in this cup games to keep them match fit and see how they'd do is invaluable.

It is but knowing our luck with draws we’ll get city next round. I’d actually put money on it.

It’s an opportunity to play our second goalkeeper and give AWB a run out but it’s unlikely it will happen. We could of played Dubravka In some of the Europa games but it hasn’t happened. Pointless us having second keepers when we don’t give them games in some competitions.

Let's worry about that IF we can get over this hurdle first, remember Villa have pedigree against us in this competition noticeably the 1994 final.

Agree with all of this. Why rest players when we only have one more game after this before the World Cup break? Let the national teams rest them if they think they need it. I want to win this trophy.
