It is weird. He’s 37 with the body of a 27 year old and he’s the only reason we aren’t in a relegation scrap.
Yeah. Manchester United - the side who scored more goals at this stage last season without him - would be ‘fighting relegation’ without Cristiano Ronaldo. :houllier:

Bruno and Sancho lost the ball more than him on Monday and he won more corners and created more chances than Ronaldo or Greenwood. He pressed more than all 4 as well.

He was shit but so were plenty of others that you didn't notice because they were completely anonymous.
I should hope he created more chances than Greenwood seeing he played double the minutes. Ronaldo was making runs to beat the band against Newcastle and Rashford either couldn’t find him, copped out and passed backwards or started one of now infamous dribbles to nothing. I agree greenwood offers very little in the press either. I’d be dropping both of them until they buy into playing a much more aggressive and selfless game. It’s not going to happen by starting them in every match that’s for sure. At least Greenwood is or was dangerous around the box. Rasford hasn’t been for about a year now.

No he hasn't the body of a 27 year old as was recently shown in the Newcastle game.

He shouldn't play every game. We should manage his minutes so that we have him on 100% for the big games in League and CL next year.

DDG, Cavani and McTominay are the only three players who have been playing well recently.

Nobody else in the regular lineup could have any complaints if they were dropped today. If there was evidence of players in good form ready to replace them, I'd say do it. Unfortunately, there isn't.

I think Rangnick can only go with his most talented available XI and hope that today is the day they turn it around. Probably Cavani and Ronaldo up front in a 2.

I don't care if the other 9 players are cones on the pitch tonight, all I want to see is Cavani starting and Maguire on the bench or better still not in the squad. Come on Ralf, convince me you've got what it takes.

If was Varane making the mistakes in the last game. I can’t see him dropping Maguire when Lindelof is out and Varane isn’t yet up to speed.

Bad as Maguire has been this season I would think Varane is more likely to be on the bench simply because he just got back from a lengthy injury break and played 3 days ago. Would make sense to manage his minutes as he gets match fit. I have to believe Bailly is starting as we made a point of asking him to come back for the match before heading to the AFCON and he would be entitled to throw an epic wobbler if we did that just to leave him out again.

Maguire was better than Varane against Newcastle. And against Burnley, his aerial presence is going to be important.

I get why you might have an agenda against him after his poor performances this season. But this match, more than any other, is one where United are going to need him:

The team is the most important thing. Manchester United will need every bit of help possible in the air.

Much as I’d like Maguire dropped, not sure Burnley is the game to do it. We’ll need his slabhead against their big uns.

    Confirmed Squad Members:
De Gea, Heaton, Henderson; Bailly, Maguire, Varane, Dalot, Shaw, Telles, Wan-Bissaka; Fred, Matic, McTominay, Van de Beek, Lingard; Sancho, Elanga, Rashford, Greenwood, Cavani, Ronaldo.

    I'm going for this line-up.

    De Gea
    Wan-Bissaka Bailly Maguire Shaw
    McTominay Matic
    Sancho Van de Beek
    Ronaldo Cavani

I've gone for Matic-McT in midfield for height, but I'm not too sure because Ralf has only picked Matic once, and that was at CB (v Young Boys)

I just want to see some fight and some bottle. Their chins were really in the dirt a few weeks ago and we need to enjoy it and get the passion back. It won’t turn us into world beaters but we can beat Burnley, surely.

Personnel-wise, I hope he’s looking at next year as much as he is looking at winning each game. It’s a balancing act. For example, I don’t reckon Ron will be here next year and I think we should use him off the bench mostly.

I don’t want to lose games but I can accept it if we’re seeing some coherent development. Would love see the kids get more minutes, especially Hannibal.

Maguire has been dropping rickets for ages so the first argument doesn't stack up. And he was brought back into the side way too early when he clearly wasn't up to scratch a few months back so the second argument doesn't cut it either.
There always seems to be some lame justification for starting Maguire no matter what he does. We have options. There's no way on this earth that Maguire should be the first name on the United team sheet....or any United team sheet for that matter. I don't get it when even the likes of De Goat and Ronaldo are put up for rotation by many.

We'd be fine with Bailly and Varane. I'd even throw Jones on for 30 minutes rather than that useless lump.

Kinda shocked at the Ronaldo hate. Scapegoating gone haywire here
Probably young supporters who don’t recall the impact he had in his first stint with us. It’s mind boggling that some are blaming one of the greatest ever for demanding standards at the club, which have fallen to pathetic lows.

Neh Maguire is easily our best defensive header and against Burnley important tool to have.

We’re an awfully long way away from his first stint. ‘Demanding standards’ is immaterial if you aren’t playing to those standards either.

We had all this stats nonsense with Smalling a few years back. I don't have an agenda with Maguire. He's just shit and certainly not the level of player we should be aspiring to, let alone having as captain of Manchester United. We'll never get back top the top if we don't fix up. I don't get what Caftards see in this player that the rest of the football world don't. It's embarrassing.

I wanna see Ronaldo and Cavani starting, please.

Even though they didn't link up much last game, they worked together wonderfully still, and Ronaldo dragged defenders along while Cavani had that instinct to take advantage of those situations.

The two grandpa’s are probably are best strike pairing too. It really should be Cavani + Ronaldo / Cavani + Greenwood.

Would love to see something like

    CM - McTominay & Fred
AM - Lingard & Van de Beek
    ST - Cavani & Greenwood

The thing about a press is, it only works if everybody does it relentlessly, every time. With Rashford, Ronaldo and Sancho, it doesnt come naturally.

At least with this six, we have five guaranteed natural pressers and hopefully they will help Greenwood learn the job

I think you are overstating why people are suggesting playing him tonight. He is currently below Varane, Lindelof and Bailly in most peoples estimation but unfortunately Lindelof is out and Varane looked far from match fit on Monday. I would still probably pick a half fit Varane against 90% of other teams but Burnley is, as others have said, a game made for donkeys. It will be physical with lots of hoofballs and their attackers are just as slow as slabhead so he won't get done for pace for once. I sincerely hope Varane and Lindelof are the first choice pairing for most of this season and Maguire is shipped out and replaced in the summer but for today it makes sense.

    Is Maguire suspended?
To get suspended, you need 5 yellow cards within 19 games (one match ban) or 10 yellow cards within 32 games (two match ban).

Maguire, Ronaldo, Fred, McTominay, Pogba and Shaw are all on 4 yellow cards after 17 games.

Tell me how we qualified for the knockout stages of the champions league then…I’ll wait.

Is Ronaldo supposed to provide passes and crosses to himself then?

We need a bit more control in midfield if we want to get anything out this game so Matic is in, the rest is just rotation to me.

What is this Bailly disrespect? He's been fairly decent in all his appearances and yet so many people want to see Mengi start over him and see him sold?

I think he might be the best fit to play Ralf's high line considering his physical tools and that he's an absolute nutjob who will takes chances high up the pitch.

Fair enough. I can deal with a rational explanation with some thought behind it. Fair play. Just hope he does the business tonight, if selected, like the rest of the team. We really need the points.
