I've gone for a conservative line-up and score prediction. Nothing too crazy.

    2-0 United win.

    ...........................De Gea..........................
    Darmian........Bailly..........Smalling.......Shaw
    ...........................Pereira..........................
    ...........Herrera...................Fred................
    Mata....................Sanchez.............Rashford

Hoping Martial is fit enough to start ahead of Mata on the right wing. We really need something more down that side with Darmian our only fit RB.

Am I the only that could've done with an extra month before the season starts? I don't know if it's being over saturated with football with the WC, my inner transfer muppet being left unsatisfied or my fear that the worst parts of last season will repeat themselves, but I just haven't got spark of excitement that usually comes with a new season.

Need to get a good start. A defeat or a drab draw will only bring in more doom and gloom.

    Team picks itself:

    DeGea
    Valencia Smalling Lindelof Shaw
    Herrera Pereira Fred
    Rashford Sanchez Martial

Unless we win 4-0 with 97% possession, we should have another dozen or so threads on how far behind City we are are or how Jose is destroying the world.

    The team picks itself?

I don't think it's 100% that Martial starts. He's not played much football to get match sharp. Mata could definitely get the nod over him, despite being awful against Bayern.

Bailly could easily start too, ahead of Smalling but more likely Lindelof.

Hasn't Valencia been injured? I could be wrong.

Will be a nailed on draw - 1-1.

Simply don't see us anywhere near ready for the new season and Leicester is always good for a goal.

I thought Bailly injured himself. Anyway he won't start ahead of Smalling.

Martial has to start; Mata is dire. He trained and played on the tour before the birth of his child. Read he was doing double training sessions at Carrington when the team was in Germany.

    Valencia is back from injury.

Wasn't aware of the Bailly injury or that Valencia is back. It does concern me that Mata may start. I genuinely think Jose will pick him. Hope I'm wrong!

Looking forward to this, United will have to much for them at a night game at OT, fans will be up for it. The window will be closed and we can finally concentrate on the football. Sanchez to score first 2.0, come on United!

Think we’ll win, and win well. Mourinho will stop just short of saying ‘feck you’ to the press in his post match conference, as he should. They have been horrible to him all summer almost simply for sport.

    Early prediction:

    De Gea
    Darmian Smalling Bailly Shaw
    Pereira
    Fred Herrera
    Mata Sanchez Rashford
Providing Bailly is fit, I'll be surprised if it's anything else.

    @charlenefan The team should be...?
    I'm glad you asked

    ------------De Gea------------
    Darmian--Bailly--Smalling--Shaw
    ------------Pereira------------
    -------Fred--------Herrera-------
    Mata-------Rashford-------Sanchez

Subs: Grant, Lindelof, Jones, Young, McTominay, Lingard, Lukaku

I certainly dont expect any sign of Pogba in the squad now :nervous:

If we can't beat them at home with a much better squad on paper we might as well write off the season.

    Sanchez to score.

Midtable teams are usually full of adrenalin on opening days, and Leicester will definitely be up for it. Expect some pacy attacks from them.

Will go with 2-0. Sanchez and Pereira masterclass.

Leicester are without their 3 best players. 1 has gone to City and the other 2 are coming back from the World Cup. We are also at home, so should be a comfortable win.

No Mahrez and presumably no Vardy, not sure who they have in reserve but I'm not seeing a great deal of threat from them. I expect a low scoring game especially when you factor in how we're playing

Booked an impromptu trip to New York on Thursday. I imagine I will be able to watch the game in New York? I’m at the Ritz Carlton, hopefully I can watch it in my room on cable?

Email or call the hotel to ask what spirt channels they get. Otherwise I’m sure there will be lots of sports bars around.

Still waiting to see who is actually available, as I'm not sure if José will start certain players who have missed the whole pre-season - even if they played a long World Cup. Coupled with possible injuries there is potentially a massive list of players we'll miss for this opening game, as drastic as this:

    Valencia
    Dalot
    Bailly
    Rojo
    Young
    Matic
    Pogba
    Herrera
    Fellaini
    Lingard
    Lukaku

Obviously, some are certain to miss the game, others are just slight doubts. I'm hopeful at least the likes of Valencia and Herrera are fine after being withdrawn from games somewhat precautionary, but the no-sale of Darmian makes me believe he's being kept at least in reserve for this game in case all of the three fullbacks on that list above aren't ready. The English/Belgian/French players are probably at least training since the Bayern game, but I'd be surprised if they start. The best we can hope for is probably Lukaku on the bench and maybe one other.

    de Gea
    Valencia Lindelof Smalling Shaw
    Herrera Pereira Fred
    Mata Rashford Sanchez
    ---
Grant; Darmian, Jones, Fosu-Mensah; McTominay; Martial, Lukaku

I am expecting something similar to this. Hopefully, we can get a few more first XI players involved. Any win will do, we need a good start.

i'd start Lukaku even if he's unfit, also what are the chances AP starts this one? I'd imagine pretty high? Unless Mourinho saw someting in Scott during preseason that the rest didn't AP should start.

We’ve had players go far in the World Cup before who have started the opening match. It seems like it’s been about 2 seconds since the final this time and already we are starting the season. It’s a little annoying.

Any chance that SAF makes it to this game? His presence would lift the atmosphere.

A sad day that all the old stats have been removed :( I'd like to take this opportunity to pat myself on the back for finishing 3rd in last seasons predictions league.

Cannot wait for kick off. Excitement kicking in now the Match Day thread is back up!

2-0, solid defensive performance from United with Fred showing what a difference he makes to the energy in our midfield.

    Rashford '39
    Sanchez '73

    Come on lads! :devil::devil::devil:

    We should buy Vardy. Seriously.
Not too old? This discussion should be in the transfer thread if serious.

He is a consistent 20-goal-a-season man at the moment, I just don't know how much longer he's capable of pulling those numbers given that a lot of his game relies on pace.

    Optimistic -

Darmian and Shaw lock down Leicester's flanks.
Martial starts on the left and scores a goal from a Pereira through ball.
Sanchez scores a brace and MoM.
    We win 3-0.

    Pessimistic -

We win 1-0 scoring from our only shot and Maguire gets MoM resulting in us doubling our supposed bid.
So you believe the worst case scenario is we win 1-0?

Worried about this in all honesty.

Think it's got a dull 1-1 or 0-0 feeling to it.

    Hopefully I'm wrong it's a comfortable win.
