There’s a difference between a real football team and a disguised proxy for a nation state. Newcastle and City are pretend clubs. But make no mistake, the reality is something else entirely. So we play Abu Dhabi (UAR) today. May the football club (however flawed and compromised themselves) overcome the PR device.

If its ugly, I fancy our chances. But if City turn up and play their slick, one touch passing then ,well, we'll likely get beat. Heavily.

I'm expecting us to go on the defensive here. Maybe a 5 man midfield with either Rashford or Hojlund leading the line.

The other alternative is that he is a good coach regarding tactics but the players are not listening. However that could mean his man-management skills aren't great, so I guess it would be back to square one, if the players are not all a*****.
If this courtesy wasn't extended to Moyes, I don't see any reason for ETH to get it either. This is just mental gymnastics. We can barely watch the output on the pitch. It's laughable to conclude that ETH has a beautiful mind and just happens to be too smart for our players, quite a few of whom he bought.

For today, I'll happily take a Mourinho-esque 1-1 draw. Surely our dum dum players can follow instructions like "see city player run, you track, else bench next time".

Anything above 4 with no response, there will be some serious questions asked of these players and manager.

What happens is we have 20 shots on target and our xG is something ridiculous like 10+ but our finishing his diabolical and they have 4 deflected shots that all go in?

I think this will go one of 2 ways

Either it'll get VERY ugly or our lazy players will trouble themselves to turn up and we will hold them to a draw

    Is KDB still out?

Wonder if we will man mark Haaland

I fear for our make shift defence, the TV could end up going off as it did in the Liverpool drubbing last season...

I think ETH is lucky we've had a little cluster of wins, if we'd lost or drawn those 3 games then get smashed here, I think he'd get the sack

This match is an advert for the relative economic health of an oil state and a parasitic nepotistic debt fuelled rentier business driven by greed. The football is somewhat irrelevant. But we will get panned most likely.

    Dead right.

People just preparing themselves by doing the whole self fulfilling prophecy thing.

If you say and think you're going to get smashed it's easier to accept if it does happen and in some ways you'll be happy that you were right.

I pretty much go into every game expecting and anticipating a win and no matter what I am always pissed if it doesn't materialise.
I'm exactly the same. Always expect we can get a result, no matter how deluded I am, or how pissed off I am if it doesn't happen.

You'll get some people saying they'll take a draw, which I never agree with, and some folk will say they'd take a narrow loss, which is frankly embarrassing.

Don’t know if it is something to do with the club or we are just simply unlucky but how the feck are our players always injured more often than not.

Injuries are part & parcel of sport but we seem to get way more than everyone else.

Usually pretty positive person, but not feeling it today.

Pack the middle, make it ugly, play for set pieces and slow the game down.

Honest question but what would this look like?

Rashford has been shit, garnacho has been shit. Antony has worked hard but not done much, pellistri has not looked good in his limited minutes. Bruno is out of form for United, Mount has been alright, McTominay has scored a few goals but does nothing outside of that. Eriksen has had a few good cameos but we all know he isn't physically able to play from the start vs City. Amrabat was just subbed at half, casemiro probably won't be ready to start but even so, has been out of form. Mainoo just returning from injury might make the bench and will need to actually integrate to the first team before he's a real option in games like this.

Our back 4 is "whoever is fit". In fact our only 2 in form players in our squad are probably Dalot and Maguire. Reguilon is hopefully fit, and then I have low confidence in whoever is Maguire's partner (and low confidence in Maguire vs City). Hojlund is playing well too, without scoring much, but he's an automatic choice.

I get the whole "play in form players", but that doesn't exist for us.
Very fair point, but there are degrees of form that should be taken into account. We may reasonably differ, but to my eye Garnacho has been substantially better than Rashford. In other cases we’re so decimated injury that ETH has no choice but to start whoever is able to lace up their boots. Mainoo is just too young and untested to start for this opponent, however great he may have looked in training this week.

I didn't say he is too smart, I said he can't convince them. That can have a lot of other reasons.

Absolutely pelting down in London right now. I can only hope this weather makes its way to Manchester by 3.30 as that's the only way we'll get anything out of this.

We may lose heavily, but I will take comfort if we manage to string a few good passes after defeat had been made certain.

We got to hope the fans are massively up for this today in the stadium. We got to have the momentum with us. It will be an emotional day, let’s hope it’s fully charged.
