This is what I would like to see:

    De Gea
    AWB Varane Maguire Shaw
    Fred Donny Beek
    Greenwood Bruno Pogba
    Ronaldo

and this is probably what we will get:

    De Gea
    AWB Varane Maguire Shaw
    Fred Matic
    Greenwood Bruno Pogba
    Ronaldo

Mike Dean must be sickened he isn't getting this game. Mr. Hollywood would've loved to be centre of attention for Ronaldo's debut.

I bet we get Michael fecking Oliver though.

    Greenwood, Bruno, Pogba
    Ronaldo

I don't like it, just think it will happen.Or even worse Fred and Pogba in the midfield
    Can't see Donny starting

SUBS: Heaton, Dalot, Lindelof, Matic, Lingard, Sancho, Martial

Two of Sancho, Cavani and Ronaldo to complete the starting the XI.

We'd have a ridiculous team if our midfield was any good. I expect Fred, Pogba and Bruno to be all over the place again.

Not sure if Ronaldo would start. Young Boys in the CL seems like a good starting point for him as well.

If Ronaldo is in the squad, he will start.

I’m also absolutely certain he’s going to score too.

Why wait for the Young Boys game, he played 30 minutes for Juventus (scored a goal), played for Portugal (scored twice), already back in Manchester and training, it's not he needs time to adapt
I'd be so glad if he scored and being subbed at the late stage of the game with standing ovations

    My team would be

    Ddg

    Dalot
    Varane
    Maguire
    Shaw

    Fred
    Vdb

    Greenwood
    Bruno
    Pogba

    Ronaldo

    —----

Fred is the best DM we have available. VDB will over better defensive protection then Pogba. Paul should play as LW/mezzala providing more cover in midfield if needed. Greenwood is undroppable while Dalot should provide more width then AWB. Dalot/Shaw Crosses will be needed for Ronaldo to be the aerial threat we need him to be.

    ------------------------------ De Gea ------------------------------

    AWB ----------- Varane ------ Maguire ----------- Shaw

    ------------------------ Fred -------- vdB --------------------------

    Greenwood -------------- Bruno -------------------- Pogba

    ------------------------------ Ronaldo --------------------------------

I'd prefer to drop Fred based on his current form, but options are slim if McTominay isn't back yet.

Yeah I was thinking same lineup, think this gives Donny minutes and gets our best players on the pitch.

    ------------------De Gea
    AWB--Varane--Maguire--Shaw
    -----------Donny---Matic
    ---Mason----Bruno--Pogba
    -----------------Ronaldo

I would pick Matic over Fred because I believe he gives us more defensive cover and would be a good partner for VdB. I dont think he's finished like many here, and rather his gametime needs to be managed. VdB deserves a start, this as good a time as any tbh. Pogba is at his best from the left, and the rest are undroppable really. Sancho to come off the bench, and eased into PL football.

Saint Maxim will be picking the ball up just in front of the defense. I don't fancy Matic's chance against him. I don't fancy Fred's either based on how Adama rinsed him last week.

We really need Scotts combativeness against these type of players.

    VDB

Not perfect, but given the paucity of fit and in-favour midfielders it’ll have to do. Plus it puts Pogba in his best position and accommodates all the “must-start” attackers, which is what Ed and the social media team will be demanding.

Ideally we’d have a squad wholly comprising players whose names were all the same length, so that formatting stuff like this wouldn’t drive the OCD sufferers among us round the twist…

    Dig up stupid!
The only case to not start Ronaldo is because you're hoping to bring him on and the roar will lift the atmosphere several levels. Would be a tremendous moment to witness

If he's in the squad I think he starts

Why are so many people putting VdB in the starting XI?

Well McTominay is just back from an op, and Nemanja was a bit Static in the last game, so it makes some sense, though somehow you just feel Ole still won't do it.

To accommodate Pogba at left wing and to ignore playing Matic. Makes sense but Ole doesn't trust him.

Plus I guess his interview with Rio, the agents recent interview. He's in a lot of people's mind at the moment.

You'd think Newcastle at home is a game he would be able to play in midfield, the problem is I don't see what a VdB and Fred double pivot is meant to do, nor do I see him suddenly starting a game when there are others ahead of him. If he was next to McTominay I think it would make more sense.

Fred & Pogba in midfield with Martial/Sancho on the left seems more realistic.

Gets better at football every game he doesn’t touch the grass
 This has elements of truth to it for sure

With all the attention around Donny after the recent interviews. Does this hinder or increase his chances of starting?

We have to try Donny in central midfield at some point. Although the guy has done feck all for us he still looks neat and tidy to me. We need a technically competent central midfielder otherwise we can forget about the league. With a bit of confidence in that position he could flourish. People forget we paid £40m to Ajax for this guy, a team who were seconds away from the CL final with Donny in their team, he is surely no mug!

I don't disagree but it doesn't make it more likely to happen.
I put him in partly because Matic has been non existent, Scott is doubtful, Pogba is likely needed to fill in for Sancho who seems like he needs to be eased in following a minor injury and slow performance.

Donny and his agent have been making some noise, especially in regards to speaking with manager and getting more minutes. There's two scenarios; either he's using the media to try and force some minutes (which I can't see working considering Ole's management of him so far) or he done the interview with Ole's approval - which indicates minutes are coming.

Given the nature of his agents comments (which read like a threat at times) I don't really foresee the increased media spotlight as anything other than an attempt to apply pressure on Ole to play him more often. And I certainly don't think it makes sense for Ole to greenlight interviews as a means to precede future cameos in the team.

The problem is that the role Donny would be asked to play in the team is too similar to Fred, and while I think he has better on-ball capabilities than Fred, unless there's a McTominay or a Matic player next to them, their defensive limitations can be exposed.
I don't think Fred is good enough for our starting XI however he does have enough stamina and energy to cover every blade of grass which I think Ole values above Donny's ability in the event where we lack a physical presence of McTominay or Matic in midfield.
