Its the cup, so good excuse to drop Bruno and Rashford.

Could happen but then we won't see the same lineup at the weekend. Lets just not fool ourselves. Bruno and Rashford are never getting benched in a serious game.

Need to reset a bit. I don’t think this is how we’ll line up, but it’s what I’d do.

    Onana
    Dalot - Varane - Maguire - Regulion
    Mainoo - Casemiro
    Pellistri - Hannibal - Garnacho
    Hojlund
I'd play this too. No way we will see it though.

Surely Bayindir has to start? Onana goes to AFCON in January and surely Bayindir needs a debut before then?
Its a must win game, Ten Hag can't afford to drop his 1st choice keeper.

We’re not going to win the league and look increasingly unlikely to get a Champions League spot, for next season.
We could be out of the League Cup tomorrow night and next week, effectively out of the Champions League for this season, if we don’t get 3 points in Copenhagen.
That leaves an FA cup run as the only hope of any success….if you believe we even make a good fist of that competition.

The team selection is definitely a conundrum. I can see the value in making wholesale changes to key personnel and that would probably be what I would do as I suspect Newcastle will do the same.

There is an argument to not drop some of our underperforming players, particularly Rashford and Bruno l. They need a spark and tend to play well in spells. If we have any aspirations of recovering this season by progressing in the cup and somehow qualifying to the next stage of the champions league we will need them both to rediscover their form and quickly.

A home game against Newcastle as holders of this cup could be a decent opportunity for them to do just that.

That being said my team would be:

    Onana
    Dalot Varane Maguire Reguilon
    Amrabat
    Mejbri Mount
    Antony Martial Garnacho

At some point there needs to be accountability for poor performances and effort. What I saw from a lot of starters from Sunday means that I could not start them again tomorrow.
Antony could well have been in the same boat however we need balance to the team and the opportunities Pellistri has had this season he hasn’t really taken them. Wouldn’t be too bothered if he was picked over Antony though.

can we just forfeit this season? :(
I just knew that summer transfer window was a bust, I said so at the time, my post is there somewhere on here, I think I said something along the lines of "underwhelming" or something like that.

I’d like to think he’d rotate the team and play a similar line up to the one that dominated palace. But with it being against Newcastle and the only chance of winning a trophy this season then I think he’ll go all out. He’s hanging onto his job.

I think you’re right. If these were sane processes, he should play whatever players needed match practice and not give a toss about losing, because any sane person would disregard a league cup performance when the League and CL are such clear necessary priorities. Unfortunately, we can be quite certain that a lot of people thinking less sanely will react to our U-18s losing on pens to Newcastle’s first eleven as ‘the final proof that the three straight wins recently was just a false dawn!’, citing headlines like ‘if Casemiro wasn’t too old, surely he would have merited a starting spot ahead of Finlay McAllister?!’etc etc

I think most of us said it the minute we realised the links to Mount were actually serious and not tabloid nonsense

Bayindir not playing a minute of first team football before he's forced to cover Onana during AFCON is such a Ten Hag thing to do.

    It'll epitomise his squad planning.

Like City, they're a club that is just better than us everywhere on the pitch right now. Like the City game, we are underdogs.

    Mount

Feel quite confident about this one. Newcastle aren't all that great and our best, unfortunately, seems to be reserved for the Carabao cup. We'll win it 1-0 or 2-1

I think it’s more a question of using every opportunity to drill relations between next months likely first 11.
If we play our strongest XI twice a week for the next few months then ETH can't complain about picking up injuries. We should've rotated more last season too.

Fancy having this game on the same night as the West Ham-Arsenal game. And both on sky.

That has not been the problem this season, quite the opposite, which is what I’m adressing. We need a back six who’s had a run of games together to get to the position where there is anything to rotate around. Of course, now we have quite a few players who must be rotated in spite of the needs of the team to avoid further injuries. But there are next to no working relations in the team right now, which is what we see.

In theory it should be a good time to catch Newcastle with the amount of players they have missing.

It sounds like Wilson won't start for them either so they have no recognised striker.

    I had a look at the Newcastle forum to try and get an idea of what we could be expecting to face, sounds like it might be something like this;

    Pope
    Livramento - Lacselles - Dummett - Targett
    Bruno G
    Longstaff - Willock
    Almiron - Gordon - Joelinton

imagine if EtH actually rotates like the last cup game or whatever that CP game was, we see no bruno and rashford, and we play well again. Would be hilarious.

We will probably win and everyone will go quiet about the Glazers again till we get trashed by Liverpool

It will all come down to how Newcastle feel about this. If they want revenge for the loss at Wembley this will be a Halloween movie experience. If they rest players to put their money on Europe, it may be a drama instead.

Who cares, just rotate. Fulham at the weekend and away to Copenhagen are far more important fixtures.

Even more so when you look at the dire fixtures that are taking place tonight in the same competition.

I know Chelsea fans loved Mount when he was there but I don't see what ETH saw in him that he wanted to spunk £55m on him & even more baffled that despite UTD playing mostly poorly this season Mount can't even get a place in the starting line-up...bloody Donny VDB mark II.

Think they’ll play a much weakened team as they have loads of injuries. We’ll win.
Yeh I was talking to someone in work and they were saying Newcastle have quite a few first teamers injured, so hopefully they'll play a weakened team. We badly need a win for confidence.

Don't give a feck if we lose, I just want to see Mainoo and Hannibal get minutes and to have a break from watching Bruno and Rashford.
I’d like to see this, but I don’t think Mainoo will be thrown straight back in, it’ll be Hannibal and Mount in midfield with Amrabat and Antony out wide (yay!).
